Kernodle starts to move some of the rubble, to see if he can tell how close the scratching sound is.

Mulvey whispers loud enough for his new companions to hear "I can cast My Gladsheim Lullaby spell to put any foes to sleep, but may need you to back away quickly to avoid drowsing you as well." he will then draw his bow and try to position himself 10' from the rubble but a clear shot at anything from the rubble that may threaten the dwarf or humans.

As an afterthought, he adds "A good hard slap will wake one from the spell. If that happens, I'll happily rouse the dwarf!"

Abe stares at the dwarf dumbly as he sorts through the rubble. Then, seeing Mulvey ready his bow, Abelard fumbles around with his shield strap and finally gets it on. Then he detaches his mace from his belt and holds it in a ready position.

While the others brandish their weapons behind him, Kernodle continues to clear away the rubble. As progress is made, the scratching sound on the other end becomes more intense, and begins to sound more like a crushing or mashing sound than scratching.

Kernodle loosens a larger rock and pulls it away, sending it tumbling down the pile into the cavern and causing Abe, Mulvey and Thena to take a cautious step back. A small hole -- too small to even pass through a single coin -- is now exposed to whatever is on the other side.

A light penetrates through this hole.

Thena steps back bringing her mace high wondering if the light is a good sign.

Kernodle answers back, also in a whisper.
Nothing yet, friend. I can only see that there is light coming through.

He will now carefully pick through the rubble to see if he can open the hole enough to look into the opening.

"Careful now, Kernodle. Back away at the first sign of trouble and let's all handle it together. Two lifeless bodies in this cavern is enough" whispers Mulvey.

Kernodle continues to cautiously dig away some of the debris from the pile in an effort to widen the hole. The dwarf reels back just ahead of a pair of hard, tooth-like mandibles which snap shut horizontally, effortlessly crushing through the rubble in front of him.

With the hole now large enough, a giant beetle -- approximately 3' long -- with two light-producing organs on its head, and a third on its abdomen, crawls through. It continues to chomp its way through the rubble as it moves. It appears to be surprised by the party.

Mulvey gasps at the monstrosity. His hand shaking ever so slightly, he reaches back into his quiver, draws and nocks an arrow then quickly fires if Kernodle is far enough away.

Abelard tries to muster his courage to attack, but can't seem to be able to get close enough to do so.

Instead, he nervously steps to the west, wondering if it might go after the dead thief, allowing all of them to strike at it at the same time.

Kernodle will reflectively retreat a couple steps toward the west (between Thena and Abe), while pulling his sword to be ready to defend.

Kernodle retreats a couple steps and draws his sword, ready to defend. The dwarf pulling back gives Mulvey a brief window during which he is able to let loose an arrow, which he does, but it clanks off the beasts rough exoskeleton without causing it harm.

Abelard uses the element of surprise to reposition himself, but Thena jumps forward with her mace and swipes unsuccessfully at the creature, which now turns its attention to four new potential targets.

Mulvey curses himself. "What kind of elf misses a bow shot from twenty feet?" he spits. He drops his bow, draws his sword and shield and advances on the armored creature, swinging.

Thena tries to recoup from her initial miss and swings at the large insect again: The small ones are ugly enough... but this is... eck!

The giant insect rapidly recovers from its surprise and lashes out at Thena, catching the cleric with its mandibles. Thena begins to scream as the creatures' large pincers penetrate through her chain mail, but falls voiceless as the creature crushes the life right out of her. Her bloodied body falls lifelessly to the ground as the creature releases its grip.

Abelard steps over the body of the fallen thief and strikes at the giant beetle with an overarm swing, but is unable to affect the creature. Mulvey, cursing himself for his errant missile strike moments earlier, drops his bow and replaces it with his sword and shield. He advances on the armored creature, but his surging adrenaline causes the elf to swing wildly. Kernodle, however, fares better than his companions. He lashes out at the giant bug and severs one of its legs, causing the creature to topple over. It lies motionless, and is easily confirmed to be dead.

The survivors all breathe a sigh of relief in a momentarily celebration of their first successful encounter.
