B/X Sandbox

#1 Post by acererak »

I just joined one of the games here on Unseen Servant and I was thinking of running a B/X Sandbox type of game here on the boards. Just checking to see if anyone would be interested in playing.

I would be quite interested. However, I don't think the B/X rules are available on the Internet at all. And I lost my copies several decades ago.

Any chance you'd consider OSRIC instead, perchance? ;)

You're joking, right?

*sigh*

*beats head on desk*

Just last night, I received my replacement copy of my 1983 ver. Expert Rules (some 11 year old punk took a not-so-sharp object to my old copy, in some ill-thought-out cobbled attempt to 3-hole punch it to put it in a binder with his Basic Rules book). The seller gave me a great deal, with the one condition that I leave the spine of this copy alone. I promised him I would.

I thumbed through it (and then pulled out my factory-3-holed Basic copy, as well), pondering if I should try to run a game or, at the very least, find one to play.

Then this morning, I looked at my signature and realized how silly a thought that was. How could I take on one more game, much less RUN one, myself?

But B/X is what I learned on... it has a big place in my heart.

(Out of all the D&D artists of old, I have to say Elmore is my favourite, by the way... Any time someone says "D&D", I think of his art in the Expert book first.)

Xaxyx, you can download Labyrinth Lord for free. It is to D&D what OSRIC is to AD&D ( retro-clone or whatever its called.

Labyrinth Lords is basically B/X with a bit of added material..

I have a copy of the LL rules in my dropbox... feel free to download it if you want. (The free version has all images removed, so... it's a little boring and there are weird gaps in the text where an image was removed.) You'll find the rules very easy to read and use; pretty much a mirror of B/X, as mentioned above.

I have a character on a game Migellito used to run (... another halfling; why do I like halflings?) using LL rules (with a few house rules thrown in for good measure) in the Eberron setting. It added a really cool Gothic flavor to the game. It's kind of in a hiatus right now. I'd love it if he brought the game over here and started it back up again and I could import my character (she's just level one, still, but I've "invested" time in her, so it's sad to see her sitting idle).

Beat me to it!
Good show, another game! On a LIRR train out of NYC right now. On my phone but hope to check my games proper when I get to my parents house.
Welcome!

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

I was not aware that LL was a B/X clone. I think I'd heard that in passing, but it didn't register. I cut my teeth on the Holmes box (shown below), then the first red/blue basic/expert boxes. Then I got into AD&D and didn't look back. I do like the simplicity of the B/X rules, and this sounds like an interesting game, but, alas, I have little time to take on a new game.

If you want to get this going, let me know and I'll set up a forum for it.

Good luck, and welcome back to the forums.

Thanks guys. I would definitely like it Toni if you could set a forum up for me. I think I would like to run Matt Finch's Tomb of the Iron God, so that could be the title. Alethan if you want to "port" your character over I'm sure we could manage that.

Evil tempter, you...

But, technically, it wouldn't be a new character, then, would it?

Definitely count me in! I won't even mention what I was originally planning on (out of fear of sounding too much like Ethan... again), but I am definitely interested in a B/X or BECMI game!

It has been seemingly forever since I've played either version, but I would love to get back into it!

Actually the DM can set up the Campaign, and ID themself through the die roller. :)

In that case, the "you" in my request was directed towards whomever is capable and not necessarily ToniXX. ;)
