A simple journey
A simple journey
Arngeir Orlygsson and Algrim Tirion made for mismatched companions as they walked south on the well worn Genin Trail. Ivinians and Khuzdul rarely get along but the duo seemed to be just fine. They had started early for the day after spending the night at the ruined Laranian Abbey of Orthasa and were not far into their day, expecting to catch the slower moving caravan today that they knew was in front of them. Their ultimate goal of Burzyn, was many days away yet. The biggest threats on your journey would be Pagaelin barbarians, Foulspawn (Orcs as Algrim calls them), Highwaymen, and thankfully highly unlikely, an Ivashu (the strange beasts of Ilvir's creation). They were moving through the woodland (less than 50% tree cover) shadowing the river Kerund to your east and in the shadow of mount Lourik (nearly 2500 feet above your current elevation) to your west.
Suddenly you both spot some smoke up ahead, not much, but more than a small campfire. Has the caravan not started for the day yet? It seems late to you for that.

Arngeir
The Ivinian takes cover behind a tree and then peers around, trying to gauge the distance to the source of the smoke.

Re: A simple journey
You estimate about 100 yards, but can't see much through the trees.

Re: A simple journey
Algrim using less tact just moves to a better vantage point to get a better look at where the smoke is coming from seeking either higher ground to talk to or a tree to climb up to look from.

Re: A simple journey
After about 25 yards you can see that the caravan is ahead of you about 75-100 yards in a small clearing. It looks like the smoke is coming from a large pile of something that a couple of men are trying to get to burn. It doesn't appear that anyone has seen you.

Arngeir
Realising they aren't about to immediately stumble into the middle of something, and that the Khuzdul might get to a battle before him, Arngeir moves up beside his travelling companion and takes in the scene:
"Caravan guards, you think?" he whispers in his limited Harnic, trying to look for any kind of uniform or indication of who the men are.
I'll have Arngeir speak in Harnic, unless I specifically state he's using Ivinian. Easier that way.

Re: A simple journey
As the two of you study them you note the following:
One of the men could be a caravan guard, he is wearing leather armor and has a short sword at his side.
The other man might be a teamster, he doesn't appear to be wearing any armor and has a long knife at his belt.
There is a spear, round shield and crossbow with a quiver propped up against a tree not far from them.
The pile appears to be bodies, small bodies that are clearly not human.
Arngeir has never seen Gargun before, but recognizes them as Foulspawn from what he has heard.
Algrim immediately knows that they are the bodies of Streaked Orcs.
See here for info on Gargun/Orcs.

"Foulspawn is that? Not seen them before, but heard of them." he scans the surrounding forest "Could be more?"

Re: A simple journey
Caravan guard. "Thank you, this way." He leads you a short distance away where you see a beautiful Sindarin (Elven) woman kneeling by a man wrapped in some bandages with his head propped up by a blanket.
Along the way you note the following: There are 4 loaded carts, 8 mules in a picket, panniers on the ground, a small cook fire (currently out), and an area where it looks like people were sleeping last night. It appears the attack came at night and they haven't had much time to get everything in order since then. You would estimate about 12 dead Gargun in the pile. There are 11 total individuals counting the Sindarin women, the man she is treating, and what is most likely a body under a blanket. Several men are wearing bandages, the man being treated is most likely a man-at-arms based on his leather armor. It looks like 2 of the other men are also wearing armor and most likely men-at-arms.
The carts look like this.

Re: A simple journey
Arngeir follows the guard, and makes a note to himself to study the foul-spawn when he gets a chance. Knowing more about their stature, weapons and armour would be useful if they are plentiful in the area.
When he arrives at the injured man he slips off his back-pack and drops to his haunches for a closer look.
"The wounds, tell me how?"

Re: A simple journey
Idril looks crossly at the caravan guard, indicating Arngeir with a tilt of her head. "Who is this?"
She watches Arngeir's actions with cold suspicion.
She turns her attention back to the bleeding man's bandages, but answers Arngeir's question. "Goblin knives. You have learning? Help me staunch the blood. He has a long cut here," she indicated his thigh, "... and a deep cut here." She points to his chest.

Re: A simple journey
Idril does not directly acknowledge Algrim, but hisses at the guard, "How many new faces did you let into the caravan?"
Re: A simple journey
The guard. "This one." He points towards Arngeir, "Said he knows a little about treating the harms of battle and his companion is a Dwarf, everyone knows the Dwarves hate Foulspawn and he looks pretty well equipped for battle to me. Sir Dwarf, would you mind helping us make sure the area is secure?"
