The Minds They Are A Changing
Waterday, 24th of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Sunny, Hot, Buggy

After a nice hot picnic of fresh fish and jungle beaver, the group decides that they will head back to town now, instead of staying here for another night.

Keg reminds the others that the natives looked very concerned about what might be in the water, so he heads straight for the river and the hidden fish trap. Pulling out the conical trap comprised of dried reeds and thin branches woven together, he finds that it already contains a strange looking blue crustacean about the size of his fist.

The others tidy up the area and douse their fie, leaving things as close to the way they found them as possible, and even adding a bit more to the wood pile.

The southern trail along the river awaits.

Keg

Will closely examin the trap as well as the crab, but he will leave the crab inside. He will not steal from the natives. Once he is sure he understands the design and how it was put together, the Norse man will toss it back where it was before and rejoin the others. Well, we really are heading back to town now instead of staying the night, let's get moving.

Elnaerel

Elnaerel agrees with Keg. As they start walking she reflects for a few seconds. "That was a good idea. Checking that fish trap, I mean. What if people would make bigger traps to be used at the sea? Maybe some kind of boat to go ahead and get the fish trapped in there. It would be a good source of food for the townies for sure. I don't know, but it strikes me as strange that they don't fish. Have I missed something?"

Keg

To Elnaerel: The shallows have been overfished. The fishermen are having trouble finding ways to fish the deeper waters. Maybe this is something we can do just off shore to get more of the deeper lurking fish and crabs. We could secure them to jutting rocks or maybe anchor them on the bottom with a bouey of some kind so we could pull them up later.

Keyon

The former sailor nods along. "Reminds me of the crab pots we'd throw out back home. A woven basket with a throat which lets them in, but closes before they can get out. We'd put a float on one end of a rope, then tie the other end to the pot. Throw it in and let it lie on bottom for a couple of days. The current pushes the smell of the bait along and attracts crabs from great distances."

He slips out front by teen feet, eyes roving and boots falling softly upon the trail.

The River Trail
Waterday, 24th of Goodmonth
Early Afternoon, Sunny, Hot, Buggy

With nearly full bellies and a good notion of how the fish trap works, it is replaced in the water and the trio gets underway, heading south back to the beach, they hope.

After about an hour or so of cautious hiking, they see another small occupied clearing along the river up ahead on the trail. Some of the distant huts look recently built, like the pavilion they just left, but they don't see any signs of life milling about the clearing.

Elnaerel

Elnaerel starts to look around. "This seems as new as it is empty. This strikes me as bizarre, to say the least. Maybe those we met are starting to move here but come and go before they bring their wives and children?"

The she walks carefully, still following the riverside, eyeing the village and the water in turn, to avoid any surprises from either side.

"Should we continue or do you want to check the place?"

She says everything softly in order to avoid being heard.

Now that I think of it: how strong /noisy is the current? Just out of curiosity.

In this area, the river flows fairly swiftly, but not like a raging torrent or anything.

It is loud enough to be heard, but not deafening.

Keg

Will look around and try to remember if this is the site where they fought with the pirates, looking for any landmarks or signs that could give him a bearing on where they are at. I say we keep pressing forward for now. I don't want to waste any more daylight.

The River Trail
Waterday, 24th of Goodmonth
Mid Afternoon, Sunny, Hot, Buggy

Wishing to continue on without wasting daylight, the trio walks through this empty village and continues down the trail. Keg looks around as they pass, seeing a familiar layout and hut construction, but not recognizing it as the place where his last group waylaid the pirates.

About an equal distance from the last clearing, they eventually come across another similarly empty riverside village comprised of thatch huts and crude jungle construction. Seeing broken hut walls and the empty fire pit where he nearly died the last time, the norseman is certain this is a place he has visited before.

Elnaerel

She looks at the Norseman with curiosity after having had a look at the area from the place she's standing now. "So you've already been here? Good! Finally a landmark one of us can recognise. Then let's get in with it. The sooner we get out of this jungle the better."

Then, in a lower voice, looking around her, she adds something in elvish:
[dialo "Forgive me, Ehlenestra, for I don't mean any offence. This place is more dangerous that what I'm used to."

Keyon

"Onward to civilization! Or a reasonable facsimile thereof."
Keyon's tone is low, but his excitement is clear. He'll set off once more, carefully and quietly,

The River Trail
Waterday, 24th of Goodmonth
Mid Afternoon, Sunny, Hot, Buggy

As they pass through the unoccupied river village, all three members of the group hear a faint crying sound coming from somewhere beyond the huts, near the edge of the jungle. It is barely audible above the normal din, and it sounds like it might be a small child's voice.

Oh crap...

Keg quirks a brow. What in the 9 hells is that? He keeps a hand near his sword, stories from back home of monsters luring hapless people to their doom by making the sounds of children.
