CHAPTER 11: Into the Palakan Mountains

#1 Post by Norjax »

...

North of Hagalton; 322D-328D/81 (Morning)

Outfitted and anxious for adventure, Syrus leads your camelid train north out of Hagalton.

Image

Laden with supplies, you ride the beasts of burden as they plod along the Upward Route leading towards the Palakan Mountains.

Image

For three days you trek north, watching mountains rise in the distance to the west of your road. The journey is uneventful save two groups of travelers heading south to Hagalton.

On day four, you leave the route and turn west, heading directly into the shallow mountains. The land begins to gently incline, and larger rock outcroppings populate the land out to the horizon. The prevalence of scrub brush is denser here than any regions you have traveled on the Long Route.

Image

Just before noon on the sixth day, those who are scouting the flanks spot a dust cloud to the south, rising out of a concealed draw or canyon. The scout on the southern flank calms their camel and listens for sounds carried on the wind, but the disturbance is too far way.

The main group is 1000 yards from the scout position, to the north.

OOC: Everyone roll 1d100 for their character. Lowest number is the southern scout who spots the disturbance.

I’m away on business through this Thursday. I can retcon supplies your character would have purchased/been supplied with by Syrus.

Bruce

[1d100] = 23

Bruce focuses his audiovisual receptors in the direction of the dust cloud in an effort to glean more information. When it's apparent that's ineffective, he urges his camelid into a trot to return to the rest of the group. as he does so, he lets out a short shrill whistle to get the group's attention, especially Kurot. If successful he indicates the disturbance by pointing.

The old ones speak of winter
The young ones praise the sun
And time just slips away

Oh
Running into nowhere
Turning like a wheel
And a year becomes a day

Whenever we dream, that's when we fly
So here is a dream for just you and I

We'll find the Sacred Heart
Somewhere bleeding in the night
Look for the light
And find the Sacred Heart"

Farmanus

With his tongue touching the tip of his mostly-healed nose, Farmanus marks the location of the dust cloud on the map he has been fastidiously making since departing Hagalton.

Silvestri points his spyglass in the direction of the cloud to try and see it's source.

North of Hagalton; 328D/81 (Midday)

Unable to discern any details about the disturbance, Bruce signals an alarm, points in the direction of the dust cloud and returns to the caravan’s main body. The light-colored scatter is indicative of disturbed ground debris and not burning matter.

Farmanus marks the location of the cloud on the map he's created during your northerly trek. The former guardsman is pleased with the parchment’s quality which allows the ink to flow sufficiently before drying in the arid environment.

Denslow (The northern scout) moves back towards the main group while maintaining surveillance of the northern flank. He remains a hundred yards north, watching the scene unfold.

Silvestri reigns his camel to the top of a nearby navigable outcropping. From there, he has an unobstructed line-of-sight into the depression. The psionist lenses with his spyglass and searches for the source of the emission.

Silvestri makes his way back to the others.

"Some kind of camel caravan, 8 camels, heavily laden. Three humanoids in front and 8 pigmonn guards, with rifles."

Farmanus

The former soldier enjoins the others to take up defensible positions behind rocky outcroppings, ideally setting up a kill zone with fire from 3 different angles.

"They won't be able to hide good if we spread out."

Syrus Plak

”It’s best to let them pass,” Syrus adds. “No need to endanger our expedition. A show of force should dissuade them from harassing us.”

North of Hagalton; 328D/81 (Midday)

The unidentified caravan exits the shallow canyon 1,500 yards south of your position. They are on a parallel track heading towards the Upward Route, two days east and opposite your direction of travel.

After presumably spotting your group, they pause and rapidly move into a defensive perimeter. Shouts are carried on the light, southeasterly wind as their camelids are forced to kneel. The eight pigmonn guards take a prone position, with their rifles aimed in your direction.

One of the strangers stands forth and shouts a repeating phrase towards you, but the distance is too far for an intelligible volume.

Silvestri moves to get a clear view of the shouting man.

He then activates his empathy power:

Silvestri’s face shimmers and transforms into a horrific human head showing muscle, tissue and blood vessels normally hidden by skin (The target sentinet). He closes his eyes in concentration and remains silent while focusing on his target.
