Kelly "Waves" English

Getting on the radio, Kelly attempts to contact the firebase. Gethsemane, come in Gethsemane. This is Vixen Zulu 09. We are at AR814989. Come in, Gethsemane. Over. When someone answers, he'll turn control of the radio over to Corporal Rayburn.

July 10th 1968.

7.00am. Weather dry, hazy and clear skies. Visibility limited to 25 metres in dense jungle. Clear view over half of rope bridge, obstructed view beyond. Clear view over trail junction and trail by falls. Dense jungle fringe.

As the squad gear up for humping out, Rexlin and Marco quickly depart.

Still watching the jungle, only the sharp eyes of a trigger happy Glyndwr pick out any fleeting movement and a short burst ends the misery of an injured gook as he staggers one last time. Silence. Though the occasional sniper shots have ceased, the conviction is that you are still being watched.

Kelly calls up the Firebase and Vixen Zulu 09 reports in. Corporal Rayburn lets Lieutenant Brubaker know your current circumstance.

Looking at the map and collected intelligence. You have engaged with two large patrols of irregulars and found a small arms cache. Couple that with the last two weeks intelligence reports of improvised explosive devices planted in the 575 road to Kon Bo banh, the Montagnard village and recent potshots with rocket propelled launchers taken at Huey's which flew out to the village. You were warned that the Firebase had previously monitored VC forces massing on the Western slopes of Cu Bre Mong. A possible speculation being touted is that the two are linked and point to the NVA strengthening in the area once again.

You are also able to contact Amazon Romeo 44, the second squad who scout on a similar mission the other side of the 575 road. They say they have travelled through the villages north of Kontum, those of Xa Do Lai and Kon Rolong, receiving a tolerant but not unfriendly welcome. Their night camp was attached by a sporadic sortie, resulting in the death of one enemy. The mission directive is to "carry on as you were" and to join up and proceed to Kon Bo banh for the evening rather than return to base.

Kelly retrieves the two claymores efficiently. No point leaving them unused and open for the VC to find and turn against you. Cinead, watches the left flank from his foxhole. Ezekiel and Diego prepare to bring up the rear as you move out. The last mortar rounds landing to create little craters on the trail leading eastwards towards Kong Gua. They then ditch the mortar, rendering it useless with a frag down the barrel. James watches for the scouts signal to follow when they clear a route.

Rexlin and Marco sent ahead to secure the rope bridge. The ravine on that side of the spur of land is quite sheer, dropping perhaps 80'ft or more with thick jungle either side. The stream below is fast flowing over the rocks looking dangerous to attempt to cross. You are able to find a route to scramble down an inclined crevasse, amassed with tree roots and creeper vines, to arrive close by the bridge, (Rex alertness pass) Fortunately the squad can descend without traversing the falls on the other side and exposing themselves on the trail beneath the cliff.

Rexlin checks the coast is clear before venturing out of cover and surveys the bridge. As pictured, it is made with thick cords of rope and planks though in places the steps have wide gaps. You pick a spot to shelter nearby and wave Marco down to follow you who in turn signals those waiting above. As you do though Rexlin, a figure steps out of the ravine about 50 metres downstream and targets your shadowy 6'ft plus silhouette.

VC sniper vs 35% cover /m2c -20%. [1d100]=69 [1d100]=36

A couple of rapid shots ring out, one coming very close to you head. You return fire, certain you have at least hit the figure who ducks for cover once more. You scan the area for the threats and any from across the rope bridge. But you see only the gloomy dense jungle. No threat appears on that side far side but walking across the rope bridge exposes you the whole length of the way to any snipers hidden downstream. Or indeed any snipers hiding in the undergrowth on the other side.

Rexlin and Marco, give me two rounds of action as the others navigate the ravine to catch up with you.

Glyndwr you may 'fire blind' at the area where the hidden VC may be.

Everyone make an Agility check to scramble down the crevasse, failure takes a 1d10.

Cinead, Diego, Ezekiel include an Alertness check as you leave the left flank.

Ask any questions or roll for any observations or relevant skill checks.

Ezekiel Washington LeRoy

Ezekiel alertness test vs 44 [1d100]=53 agility test vs 63 [1d100]=6

Oblivious to any watching snipers or encroaching fiends. He salutes the Buddha statue that had watched over them and follows in line clutching his grenade launcher, glad he is not carrying the mortar any more.

He finds it a whole lot easier sliding down the tree roots from the cliff than climbing up.

Kelly "Waves" English

The radioman is able to climb down the rock with ease, his wounded shoulder not hindering him in the least. Knowing someone was just firing at them, English keeps his eyes open, searching for anyone who may be trying to target them.

Rex will curse as the bullet screams past him but then laugh as he is sure he just saw the sniper go down. He then yells at the top of his lunge to be heard by the others. HEY! NVC ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BRIDGE! JUST SHOT A SNIPER! MIGHT BE MORE! CAREFUL MOVING DOWN HERE!
GOT A GOOD BEAD ON THE BRIDGE! WILL COVER YOU BEST WE CAN! MIGHT WANT TO CUT THE BRIDGE!

Rex will find a spot where he is covered and take aim at where they spotted the sniper earlier and keeps his eyes peeled and ready to take shots at anything moving in that location.

Alert per Round: To Hit: DMG: I am actually hoping for some action now because if there is, Rex is going to be deadly!!!

Glyndwr doesn't relish being last man down, but he feels it is his duty to cover the others, so he keeps post and sends a short burst of suppressing fire into the trees.

As soon as everyone has moved he scrambles after them hurrying to catch up.

July 10th 1968.

7.10am. Weather dry, hazy and clear skies. Visibility limited to 25 metres in dense jungle. Clear view across rope bridge, obstructed view beyond. Dense jungle fringe on ravine sides. Clear view of waters and boulders in stream for 200 metres

Taking advantage of a lull in the fighting, Corporal Rayburn orders a guarded withdrawal from the foxholes on the clifftop in order to cross the rope bridge.

Rexlin has scouted ahead with Marco and while he takes cover by the bridge end, he has come under sniper fire from a figure hiding behind a boulder downstream. The VC momentarily dodges from behind the rock to fire up at Rexlin and then dodges back again. Rexlin copies his manuevre using the tree trunks as cover. After an exchange of fire, the VC is caught too slow and combined with a burst from Marco, he falls face down in the stream waters to float as some waterlogged flotsam across the rocks.

However before the pair can celebrate, you are alert enough to distinguish the figure was no coolie hatted peasant but a uniformed man. And he was not alone ...

Another pair of snipers dodge in unison to suppress your fire. Their martial training coming to the fore with stark accuracy and discipline. Bullets buzz by the tree trunk the scouts shelter behind and one zips through the hardwood tearing a huge gash in the bark and penetrating Rexlin between the ribs. Before you can stare down in shock a rat-a-tat of rapid fire strafes your position and Rexlin gets grazed a second time across his torso, the blood spurts to decorate the tree in steaming crimson streaks. -32hp and -8 flak AC
James and the Corporal scramble down the ravine route to the bridge, arriving in time to see the hail of bullets impact around the scouts. Glyndwr rakes the ravine, auto firing blind onto an estimated position, the bullets peppering the rocks and skimming across the pebbles. He empties the LMG belt of rounds without finding a mark then scrambles down the route to relocate.

I have posted in the illustrations & pics topic a picture of a rope bridge over a ravine to give you a visual perspective though the sides of ravine are much steeper and more jungle overgrown in the scenario.

next actions please.

Rexlin & Marco: give me two actions stay behind trees, go prone, retreat out of view, attack, cross bridge, any other actions.

Everyone else provide one action please.

you are faced with a pair of riflemen shooting from behind some boulders on the right of the stream and a pair of VC working a machine gun from behind a fallen log on the other.

crossing the bridge will expose you to anyone downstream, it is an Agility test to make it across without stumbling. Also firing while crossing adds a further-10 to your to hit probability due to unstable platform.

VC in the ravine are considered 'in cover' so at -40 to hit.

Rexlin gives a WHOOP! as he sees the VC go down but blinks seeing the uniformed soldier. Oh this is about to get... Thump! Thump! he looks down as he falls back on his butt. ...Oh shit... Oh shit! as he realizes he's been hit. He stares in disbelief for a long second before grunting and rolling behind the trees. Calling out. I'M HIT! NVC IS DOWN HERE!

Coughing and trying to asses his situation and... well, he just gets pissed off. YOU RAT EATERS!!!

Round 1:
Gritting his teeth he will go on his stomach and move fast as he can to the side using the trees and underbrush as best he can to change his position and try to throw off the snipers that are doubtless trying to get a bead on where he fell. Marco! Get down and move! Snipers will be looking where they saw us!

Once he has moved some distance away he will grunt again and put his back to another tree before turning so he is using it for as much cover as possible before taking some pop-shots towards the NVC.

M-16 DMG [4d10+5]=21+5=26

Ducking back behind the tree, *Cough* Marco? You with me? Got any ideas?

Are they within throwing range?

Not as happy about not having the mortar now, Diego planted himself and did his best with the M-16 against the VC machine gunners. They might be easier to hit.

Marco trying to keep up with Rex copies the same tactics shooting then dodging behind trees and whatever other cover he can find. "Yeah I'm here with you Rex. Where's that mortar we found?" is the only idea he has in mind currently. While still trying to keep his eyes open and on the lookout for any further ambush.

Ezekiel Washington LeRoy

Gets down the route using the tree roots and vines. His grenade launcher locked and loaded with a fresh high explosive, the grenadier hunches down and takes the place of Rexlin as he crawls away. With a better view from that point of seeing the enemy positions, he tilts the weapon slightly and angles a round to thud in the vicinity of the machine gunners.

"Maybe we could use a smokescreen to shield our movement across the bridge?"

I also think if we are facing uniformed regulars then there could be a lot more of them. Both creeping up the ravine and stream and behind us, maybe even across the rope bridge?

"Corporal Rayburn, what do you want us to do?"

Instead of climbing down the ravine, Kelly takes up a firing position, looking for any additional snipers. If he is able to find any, he'll target them with his M-16.

Hurriedly picking his spot he calls out Were'd you want my fire?

As soon as he has a target he lets off a short burst.

July 10th 1968.

7.11am. Weather dry, hazy and clear skies. Visibility limited to 25 metres in dense jungle. Clear view across rope bridge, obstructed view beyond. Dense jungle fringe on ravine sides. Clear view of waters and boulders in stream for 200 metres

The squad scramble into action, some by crawling away, some by charging forward. Rexlin and Marco beat a fighting retreat, under a hail of bullets they return fire and change positions further back in the undergrowth.

Corporal Rayburn

Helps take the offensive to the men in the ravine. He tossed a frag over the rope bridge but it falls short of the VC positions and explodes harmlessly in the waters.

James breaks out the unit medic bag once more and tries to staunch the blood loss from the beefy marine. He checks both wounds treating them with aplomb, using the last of his bonus 1st aid kits. Satisfied he has treated Rexlin to become walking wounded, +15hp

Gung-ho grenadier Ezekiel lets them 'have it' with another well placed power launched grenade, showing the corporal just how it should be done. The blast impact sends shrapnel and body parts flying, splattering metal and meat along the fallen log the VC machine gun was propped against.

The two riflemen dodging from the boulders are equally disemboweled by the combined shooting of the others.

Corporal Rayburn answers the question of what next by ordering a smokescreen both sides of the rope bridge. Having 'a bad feeling about this' is a standard prophetic comment of doom from him but that is a feeling you all relate to.

The little group of VC in the ravine are dead. Are more coming? You think so, possibly from the trail you first came down or from the eastern trail. You have a minute to gather wits and decide how you cross the rope bridge and who goes first. Corporal Rayburn will come in the last pair.

Crossing the rope bridge involves Agility checks. I need two checks, 1st a normal check, the 2nd with a -10 penalty as you step more carefully across the wider plank less gaps. Anyone firing whilst on the ropebridge does so with a -20 penalty. Failure on checks doesn't mean you fall off (just yet) but that your progress is hampered. The bridge is 30 metres across. A pair may cross the bridge 10 metres apart at no additional penalty but for each further person on the bridge at the same time, you take another -5% cumulative penalty.

discuss, questions and next actions please with appropriate rolls included.
