The Dark Tower - Wizard's Guild of Gaul

A massive tower of dark gray stone, larger than those in Frogmorton proper, lies an hour's walk down a road Southwest from the Ford. (Located at #4 on the map.) The people of Gaul regard it with both hope and trepidation, a guild of Wizards established by and loyal to the ArchDuke, ensuring no demons flood the farmlands again as they did in August of 2021; an event all citizens of Gaul whisper of furtively.

This is a PC-run guild organization. Additional information will be laid out by them below.

Description and Mission
The University promotes the sharing of arcane knowledge to the mutual benefit of its Founders, Faculty, Students, and the public. The University may also be known as "the Society," "the Wizard's Guild of Gaul," or even "SMAUG."

Services Available to the Public

NPC Recruiting:
  • Anyone with friendly status with the University may recruit NPC apprentices.
  • The default status is "friendly" for everyone except followers of gods hostile to arcane magic.
Scrolls: The following scrolls are available for purchase:
  • Comprehend Languages: 200 gp
  • Floating Disc: 200 gp
  • Light: 200 gp
  • Unseen Servant: 200 gp
  • Continual Light: 400 gp
  • Locate Object: 400 gp
Spells: An apprentice will cast the following spells for a fee:
  • Magic Aura - 150 gp
  • Detect Magic - 150 gp
  • Detect Evil - 300 gp
  • Dispel Magic - 500 gp

Admission (Membership)

Admission is open to all users of arcane magic.

Membership Levels:
Students
  • Students may join by contributing one spell not already in the library (this spell can also be used as the payment for copying spells from the library).
  • Students have no voting privileges.
Faculty
  • Faculty are expected to make significant and continuing contributions to the field and to the university. These contributions will typically be in the form of knowledge (i.e., spell for the library), but large contributions of money, equipment, or property may also qualify.
  • Faculty members must contribute 12 weeks per year to training apprentices.
  • New Faculty are appointed by approval of a majority of all current Faculty members.
  • Faculty have voting privileges in all University matters.
Founders
  • Founders are faculty who are recognized for substantial contributions that enabled the formation of the University.
  • New "Founders" may be elected by unanimous consent of all other Founders.
The Archchancellor
  • The Archchancellor is a Faculty member responsible for the University's administration. He may also be known as the "Archmage."
  • The Archchancellor is elected by majority vote of the Faculty to a two-year presumptively renewable term. He may be removed prior to the expiration of his term by a vote of three-fourths of all Faculty.
  • The Archchancellor has the title and rights of a Lord of Gaul.
  • The Archchancellor has a seneschal who manages the day-to-day operations of the tower. The seneschal employs the tower's cook and the guards who protect the lower gate. This seneschal costs the Archchancellor one retainer slot.
Membership Benefits:
  • Use of the spell library to copy spells (access depends on membership level)
  • Access to the tower's research facilties for spell and item research
  • Free room and board with good meals (this confers the +2 benefit to saving throws)
Revocation of Membership (Expulsion):
  • Members may be expelled from the University only for good cause. "Good cause" may include, but is not limited to, theft from the guild, attempted destruction of guild property, violent action against other members, or other serious conduct detrimental to the guild.
  • Expulsion may only occur following a trial on a vote of three-fourths of all Faculty members (excluding those who are deceased, petrified, or otherwise ineligible to vote; see below). Note that the required vote is three-fourths of all Wizards, not of those voting (i.e., if there are eight Wizards and all five vote to expel while the other three do not vote at all, the expulsion fails).
  • Founders may only be expelled by unanimous vote of all other Founding Wizards.
Effect of Death, Incapacitation, Resurrection, and Undeath on Membership
  • Members who die or are incapacitatied become members in suspensa, with app benefits and privileges of membership suspended.
  • "Incapacitation" includes physical death-like conditions (e.g., turning to stone, catatonia) or loss of mental autonomy (e.g., charm, domination, possession).
  • "Death" includes transformation into the undead.
  • Resurrection or restoration retore membership. Reincarnation does not.
  • Anyone who voluntarily becomes undead immediately forfeits membership.

The Library

Borrowing Privileges:
  • Students may access the "open stacks" (i.e., all spells except those restricted to faculty use). Students must contribute spell levels for any spell levels received on a 1:1 basis at the time of copying (i.e., to copy a third-level spell, a student must contribute at least three total spell levels). Contributed spells must not already be in the library. Students must pay for their own inks (50 gp/level for ink).
  • Faculty have unlimited and unrestricted access to the library. They may copy one spell level for free per level of non-duplicate spells contributed; otherwise, they pay materials cost.
  • Founders may also copy one free level per two levels of spells contributed at the time of founding (excluding Read Magic) by more than one founding member (rounded up). Founders may also copy one free spell level per 100 gp contributed at the time of founding.
Filling the Library: If the Archmage determines that the library has become so comprehensive at a particular spell level that it is unrealistic to expect students to contribute new spells, he may declare that level to be "reasonably complete." Students may copy spells of a "reasonably complete" spell level for 100 gp/level in lieu of contributing spells. "Reasonably complete" spell levels, if any, will be noted as such in the library catalogs below.

Research Facilities (Laboratory)

The University's research facilities are available for use by faculty and students for spell research and item research.

Facilities:
  • The laboratory has 5,000 gp of equipment, granting +1 to research checks.
  • The guild has a proctor that adds +1 to critical failure checks (preventing destruction of the tower).
  • Multiple guild members may use the lab for research at the same time.
Laboratory Access:
  • Students using the laboratory for spell research must pay the normal cost (100 gp/spell level).
  • Spell research by Faculty does not incur the usual 100 gp/spell-level cost, but if successful the spell must be added to the University library. As long as their teaching load is caught up, Faculty always have +5 apprentices assisting their research.
  • Apprentices may be hired to assist with research at a cost of 100 gp per apprentice level per week.

Baxtaw so will use some of his 42 free spell levels. Also is there a place where I can find what spells are in which Idiom?

Do founding members have permanent quarters in the guild? If so, I will ask Marullus to create a Guild quarters thread (In Drams PC thread)so that I can secure access equipment or treasure there.

I think it makes sense that all faculty have permanent quarters in the guild. Marullus, any objections to that?

The limitation on permanent quarters drives you to find a place to invest your treasure in. Of you're faculty, you're investing in the University, so I am fine with it.

I would encourage that your posts (in quarters or no) should be here. If you want to make a private thread in your sub forum for tracking stuff you're always free to do so.

Pendleton spends some time in the new tower inscribing spells into his spellbook from the library:

Guardian Shield Level 2? I did not find that in Lab Lord PDF manual. Was this a created spell by Bianca? If so could you post explanation here?

Level 2: Guardian Shield.

Caster uses this spell to cast a level 1 shield over both themself and one other within reach.

And yes this is the research that Bianca was working on in the Tower in Beidth, so it is unique.
