Temple Detail - Birbal

#1 Post by drpete »

In the morning, the quaggoth take Birbal directly to the Temple to Llolth.

The room is dark, and decorated with spider web designs, especially on the rugs covering the floors.

In the center of the room is a giant statue of a spider, representing the goddess Llolth.

Birbal is taken by the quaggoth, and laid out on the altar.

After an extended delay, the young priestess enters and checks his restraints.

Eventually, candles are lit, and a group of drow enter. The priestess begins a prayer service.

She traces designs on Birbal's chest as she prays and the drow chant adorations to their goddess.

A giant spider comes out of the shadows, and begins to lick the blood from the thin cuts. The spider appears ready to wrap Birbal in its web, when a cry goes up from outside the temple!

The drow jump to their feet, preparing to investigate!

Birbal will check the resistance of his restraints to see if he can squirm himself loose from at least one of them.

Birbal tries to escape his restraints, but they are too tight to slip his hands out of... you are restrained, and will suffer disadvantage on attacks, and attacks on you gain advantage, but you are not chained down.

The drow gather up their weapons, and head to the door. The worshippers all exit the temple. The priestess leads her spider to the exit, and looks like she will follow the drow out next round...

How is Birbal restrained? Is he connected to the alter or is he simply restrained at the wrists?

He has his "usual" manacles which connect his wrists on a chain to his neck. He was not additionally chained to the altar.

I will wait to make sure the spider and all the drow have exited the room. Then I will roll off the alter on the side opposite the exit and crouch down behind it for a moment (30 seconds give or take) in case anyone pops their head back in. If I don't hear anyone else, I will make my way to the exit and peer out in both directions to see that the way is clear.

The drow and spider exit.

You hear shouting and commotion outside, to the left, not far from your location. It sounds like the drow are shouting at someone on the rope bridge.

You also hear, softly, an awful droning sound, like a huge number of awful bees, approaching from the distance.

Birbal proceeds quietly towards the drow and the rope bridge to see the source of the disturbance and any possible use it could be to him.

Awesome!

So, Birbal sneaks out of the temple, flipping around below the rope ladder, so no one can see him.

He comes out on the narrow walkway leading between the barracks and the guard post. About 10 feet down the route to the guard post is one of the narrow rope bridges. It is filled with drow and quaggoths, and you see that both ends of the bridges have more drow gathered at them, including the drow priestess and her spider, who are only maybe 5-10 feet from you.

All of them have their attention focused on the spider webs below. Drow are shooting their hand crossbows, and the quaggoth are roaring at some target below your line of sight.

The path toward the barracks is clear, but you would need to get by about 10 drow and quaggoth to move toward the guard post.

The buzzing sound is louder out here, but it's source is not apparent.

Birbal is going to hold his position here and try to see what the commotion is all about. It will obviously benefit him in the long run since anything the fires the drow up is good but he needs to see what is going on before taking on 10 opponents.

The drow are, initially, focused down on the space below the rope bridge. You see that a few of the drow were shooting at something perhaps caught in the webs below.

As you watch, the buzzing intensifies, and you hear a horn off in the direction of the quaggoth cave sound an alarm!

This sends the drow into a bit of a panic. Some of them state out into the darkness, and some of them... the priestess and two of the drow worshippers, turn to move back in your direction in response to the alarm.

You are, for now, well hidden beneath the rope ladder leading into the temple.

If you want, you can let the priestess and the guards move past you, or you can interact with them in some way.

Birbal prepares to follow the priestess and her entourage back into the structure but he will hang back a little to see what the source of the buzzing is. Something to terrify the drow may be an opportune time to escape.

You remain in your concealed position, right under their noses.

The young priestess directs the two drow to continue down the path toward the barracks, and she quickly climbs up the steep rope bridge back into the temple, going right over your head.

As you wait, you see from your vantage point that there seem to be several large creatures flying around the cavern. You see two large (8-9 feet tall), bat-winged, taloned creatures fighting several large (8 foot long) things that look pretty much like giant insects. The giant insects are making the horrible buzzing sound, and the bat-winged creatures swirl and dive, trying to avoid them or rake them with their talons.

The aerial battle comes close, and the droning sound fills your ears, causing spots to appear before your eyes...

You need a Constitution Saving Throw...

here it is...

Birbal Con ST: [1d20+2] = 18+2 = 20

You are ok.

Birbal will make sure the way is clear by checking the tunnel first and if it is clear, he will move quickly to the safety of the tunnel.

You look up the walkway, and as you prepare to go, you see a pair of drow guards come running up the path towards your location.

As they approach, the droning intensifies as aerial battle approaches, and the drow skid to a stop quite close to your hidden location, putting their hands over their ears.

A taloned, bat-winged creature tackles one one of the flying insect men in mid air, and they tumble, crashing right through the rope bridge, collapsing it, and sending the assembled guards tumbling down into the webs below.

One of the two drow guards collapses to the ground. The other looks around, panicked, and rushes up the rope ladder into the temple, slamming it behind him!

The rope bridge is gone, but the ledge leading back toward the barracks seems, for the moment, to be clear...

Drow ST: [1d20] = 9
Drow ST: [1d20] = 16
