House Rules
House Rules
I will be using OD&D and BX to run this campaign. We will follow BX unless I specify otherwise.
Since we have a dice roller here, I will generally let players roll dice, but if it makes sense for me to roll to keep things going, I will do so (for example, in my OD&D campaigns, I would run several rounds of combat on autopilot until a PC gets wounded - this speeds things up a lot).
I will fill in specifics of how I will meld BX with Yoon Suin shortly.
I need to read up on several sections in BX, however, I really like my hit point survival rule I've been using in OD&D:
Dwarves
Dwarves may either be fighters (use the BX rules as is) or Thieves. Dwarf Thieves follow everything for Thief except the experience requirements are 10% higher and they are limited to level 12.
Slug Men
I'm not sure, the author runs all races mechanically as humans. Can be Magic User or Cleric.
Hit Points
A character reduced to 0 hit points is unconscious and will need a days rest to recover to 1 hit point. A week spent in town will recover all lost hit points.
A character reduced below 0 hit points must make a survival roll. The roll is:
d20 <= Con reduced by the number of hit points below 0.
If healing is applied (only from one source), the roll must still be made, but might be at a bonus if hit points are increased above 0. The roll becomes unnecessary if the healing restores the character to full hit points.

Re: House Rules
Just so I'm tracking, is this the ruleset I should be using?

FWIW, I also have the original basic and expert rules, don't know how much B/X differs from them...

Re: House Rules
What I meant by B/X is Moldvay Basic and Cook/Marsh Expert (as opposed to Mentzer BECMI).redwarrior wrote:Just so I'm tracking, is this the ruleset I should be using?

I'm not sure how BX Essentials compares.
Here's the originals from RPGNow:

Re: House Rules
B/X Essentials is B/X (Moldvay) but cleaned up and easier to reference.
Re: House Rules
Ok, then that certainly can be used as a reference. I have the free text only version so if there seems to be a confusion where it doesn't match what I expect, I can verify if we've stumbled on a place there is a difference (which sounds like there genuinely should not be).Pulpatoon wrote:Yup, B/X Essentials is very true to Moldvay/Cook.

Re: House Rules
I have made a document of the core adventuring rules from B/X Essentials, which, in my humble opinion, isn't terrible, if you want a free reference with a bit more panache than the text doc.

Re: House Rules
Great blog, too! I like the BX Satyr class.
Re: House Rules
Thanks! I'd actually forgotten I'd written that. I think I'd write it a little different, today, but I also kinda want to play a satyr, now!
