You open the door...

Liquid blue fire churns in the air of this room, illuminating the space with cerulean light. The eldritch glow reveals a broad wooden slab with rusty iron restraints at each corner. Its face is discolored with dried gore and other fluids. A worktable bearing perfectly and precisely arranged arcane tools stands nearby, a closed cabinet above it. The smell of fear, sweat, and blood is heavy in the air.

A gaunt, hairless human dressed in pale, pastel robes stands by the worktable. Seeing you, he prepares to cast a spell...

So first, someone roll for your chance to be surprised.
A 1-2 on a d6 means that it takes you (all) a round to take this all in, and he gets a free attack.

If you are not surprised, you need to beat a 9 initiative to go before his spell. This is not a spell that Shmehk has a counter to. He has AC 13.

Surprise:[1d6] = 4

Init: [1d20+1] = 8+1 = 9

Shmehk

Not able to cast his force manipulation spell again this day, and concerned that a choking cloud might affect his compatriots, Shmehk rushes in with his long sword, trying to knock the wizard back into the work table (deed):

Initiative: [1d20+1] = 19+1 = 20

Long Sword: to-hit [1d20] = 14, deed [1d3] = 3, dmg [1d8] = 7

:D

Whoa, indeed!

Shmehk rushes in and slams the man back into the worktable. Various gruesome instruments and knives are scattered on to the ground.

Before the wizard can right himself, Dunulk finishes him with a stab through the heart with the short sword he took from one of the guards!

Dunulk init: [1d20] = 15

Dunulk attack: [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12 Damage:[1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7

Shmehk

"That was lucky, do you want to search him and I'll have a look in the cabinet? Maybe I can find out what they are doing with all these tools"

The room continues to be lit by the eerie floating blue fire. The fire creates a circle floating about 8 feet off the ground, surrounding the restraint- fitted slab.

Searching the wizard, you find that he is barefoot. The wizard has a pouch containing coins. There are 56 gold rilks, and 10 coins made of curious, green stone.

You find that the cabinet is locked.

The instruments seem to be arcane in nature, as there are runners and symbols on several of them. Some seem to be knives or other instruments for inflicting pain, while others seem to be bowls, arcane foci and such.

Shmehk, to discern more about their purpose, make an intelligence roll. You can add a d3 in addition to your int bonus, as this is about magical knowledge. I'll give you info based on how high your roll is...

Yeah. They seem to be worth something, but it's not at all obvious from your training what he was doing.

Dunulk tries the key from the closet in the cabinet door, and it opens!

Inside are several vials:
3 contain the same powder as the one you found in the bedroom.
3 glow an electric blue
1 contains a pink liquid.

There's nothing that would make a great weapon. It's more like... well, like dental tools or something. A bunch of pokey things and small knives that you might use to yank teeth or skin someone. Not great for throwing or actual fighting, though I guess you could imagine killing someone with then if they didn't fight back much.

Shmehk examines the blue fire. At this stage he is not going to touch it, but see how it behaves and look for a source. He will bring his hand reasonably close, to check if it is radiating heat.

Int check: [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12,[1d3] = 2

The fire does not seem to radiate any heat. It is brightly enough that it seems to be the primary illumination in the room.

There is no clear "source" of the flame, in the sense that it doesn't seem to be shooting out of anything, but there are three vials in the cabinet glowing with the same electric blue color.

Shmehk will remove the vials from the cabinet and examine them for any markings.

"Perhaps this blue powder invokes this fire in some fashion. I would need time to examine it"

He'll also check the cabinet for secret compartments.

"What is the deal? Doesn't anyone carry a decent dagger?!?!"

looks at the display of little blades and pokey things with disgust...
