I edited my original update for round 7 to include the added attacks for Canun, AdaRue, and Vernon.

I'm sure Canun will be quick to take all the credit...

Junius quickly assists the others in slaying the sleeping goblins.

He then goes about checking with the others as to who is left and how bad shape they all are. He is in severe pain, and may not survive another sword attack.

Vir-Kayik's Chamber
The sleeping goblins are easily dispatched of, as are the goblins that previously fled as they offer next to no resistance after being discovered trying to claw their way past a locked door on the far southern wall, beyond the goblin king's throne.

Once all the goblin threats have been eliminated, a search is conducted.

The goblin guards carry minimal treasure, and the 16 of them produce only 37 silver and 16 gold pieces; plus their poor quality leather armor and crude short swords. Better luck is had searching the bodies of Vir-Kayik and Lom-Kayik, where the zombie goblin king had the curved, glowing goblin blade plus his ornate crown built of solid platinum with a dozen gems inset upon it. The goblin shaman's staff appears normal, but he was wearing a golden ring on his clawed, left index finger and also carried a spellbook with the following magic user spells:
  • Level 1: charm person, detect magic, light, magic missile
    Level 2: invisibility, detect evil, mirror image


He also has a key in a pouch hung from a makeshift belt, which is tried -- successfully -- in the locked door on the southern wall.

Which leads to another locked door, which the same key is successful unlocking.

This door opens into what must have been Vir-Kayik's personal chambers; a room that comes as close to opulence as one could possibly expect in a dungeon.

A large decorative area rug spans the floor just inside the entrance, and, behind it, a fine quality bed with white silk sheets and pillowcases; obviously imported from afar. A single nightstand is positioned to the side of the bed.

A table with four chairs stands off to the right; behind it, hanging on the walls, are rows of fine, goblin-sized clothing in bright red and blue colors.

None of this attracts your attention as much as a large wooden chest sitting against the far corner off to your left.

Vernon uses his bastard sword to lift the edges of the rug, looking under it.

With tears in her eyes, AdaRue says a prayer over her fallen comrades. We'll need to send word to their families. Let them know of their deeds and selflessness. She recommends grabbing what they can carry easily and returning to Brighton. We don't know how many goblins, wolves and slug-things are left to face on the way out. She uses her remaining spell to heal Junius.

Cure Light Wounds [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2 Whoops... :oops:

Horatio checks the chest for traps, being careful not to step on the rug on the way there.

He looks back and shrugs.

Is there a lock on the chest?

Canun oversees the search of the room from the safety of the entrance, and watches along with Junius as Vernon uses his bastard sword to lift the edges of the rug. The trio peers underneath the large decorative rug and the dwarf, studying the stonework in the floor, notices the outline of a large section which appears offset from the rest. Rolling the rug to expose the area for a more thorough inspection reveals a 5-foot square pressure plate. The group uses the silver coins recovered from the goblin guards to outline the area to avoid.

Horatio avoids the trapped area and moves to inspect the large chest. The chest is made of a dark oak wood bound in black iron. An already triggered needle trap juts out of the keyhole of a lock -- which now lies open.


AdaRue says a prayer for her fallen comrades and uses one of her spells to heal Junius, returning the dwarf to near full health. "We'll need to send word to their families. Let them know of their deeds and selflessness," she says. The midwife recommends grabbing what can be easily carried and for the group to return to Brighton.

"Huh," says Horatio, staring at the sprung trap. "Wonder who got stuck on that. I'm surprised I don't see a body here."

He looks for one of the crappy goblin spears and uses it to open the lid of the chest from as far away as he can. Assuming he survives that, he checks under the bed, under the mattress, in and around the side table, and anywhere else he thinks a goblin might hide its shinies.

Horatio leads the search of the room. The chest, lined with velvet, contains eight sacks, cinched closed with a drawstring. Simply jostling the sacks with the hilt or pommel of a sword or dagger produces the familiar clinking of coins. This is confirmed if the sacks are opened, where seven of them filled with coins of silver, and the last filled with gold. Each sack is estimated to contain roughly 300 coins.

Sandwiched between the sacks are four white bone bottles, each labeled with the words “blight gone” written upon them in goblin writing, which Horatio can read.

The thief quickly moves to the nearby bed and discovers a small, lumpy silk pouch. Inside are six gems; each roughly thumbnail sized:
  • Gem 1: translucent brown with golden center
    Gem 2: opaque orange
    Gem 3: transparent yellow-green
    Gem 4: deep green
    Gem 5: transparent rich olive green
    Gem 6: transparent fiery yellow
On the nightstand, next to the bed, are two wooden vials. Each vial has a cork stopper with a symbol of an hourglass flowing upside-down stamped upon it.

A Hero's Welcome
As you emerge from the old goblin halls, the fresh chilled air of the Brighton area fills your lungs. Your eyes take in all the colors and brightness of the sky and that feeling of freedom settles in on your soul. You feel victorious as you take account of what you’ve accomplished: Dealt with an old goblin shaman and his undead royal brother; cleansed the waters that have been causing this blighting plague; saved many men and women; and wet your blades with the blood of many goblins. All in all, despite what you may have lost in those old goblin halls, you accomplished what you set out to do... save Brighton.

You travel back to the town, following the water for many hours until you finally see the Northgate beckoning. The wardens at the gate smile at your return; they know you were victorious. They always knew you would be.

You didn’t expect to see all the men and women gathered for your return, just as they were gathered for your departure. You didn’t expect to see the men who warned you to save their families clapping you on the back with grateful nods. You didn’t expect to see so many eligible women throwing their kerchiefs at your feet, offering you favor.


When the heroes’ welcome finally draws to a lull, you see humble Richan Thatcher, seated in his rolling chair. An aid had wheeled him all the way to the Northgate, surrounded by five wardens. Despite the fact that he sat the whole journey, he appears winded and tired. He smiles at you warmly and claps his hands.


The rest of the town joins him for several minutes.

AdaRue smiles, knowing she has helped this community, and knowing that, merely Wells after being cast out of her childhood home, she has found a new one. She drafts letters for the familes of her dead friends, and one for her own, letting them know where to find her, if ever needed. She uses her treasure to purchase a building, creating a town infirmary and birthing clinic.


Having only whet his appetite with this game and small fortune, Vernon uses his coin purchase better equipment and sets out to see the world, likely to never be seen again.

Horatio does some quick math: 320 gp each, not including the potions or any of the treasure from the previous rooms. Not bad. Not enough to set him up for life somewhere warm with his choice of open-minded women, but not bad. He could probably invest that in some scam or other. He considers sussing out whether Vernon and Canun would be interested in finding some other suckers who need to be separated from their coin.

Keebler accepts the thanks of the Brightoners patiently and graciously. He has no more desire to adventure, if indeed he ever had any to begin with. He invests his share of the treasure in a good horse and sets off to find the land of his ancestors, where he can spend his days unmolested by goblins, occupied with songs, art, wine, and scholarly study.

Junius admits to himself he much prefers this type of welcome than the forced exit from his hometown. But, he isnt much for admiration and says a few muted thankyous as he makes his way to the local watering hole.

There, he will lift a mug of ale to those sacrificial adventurers who willingly gave their lives to the cause.
