It could also come up with creatures that regenerate on their own, I'd imagine. Or maybe I remember. ;)

So selfless of Rhybek to shout a warning. Lug probably would have gone with freezing in some lewd pose.

So there is no chance to revive him, then? :( I had hoped...

Well we should try and fetch him, at any rate. We can either sell him as a nice statue, or Clay would keep him for Beith's Watch. Where are his belongings, anyhow? On him? Are they stone now?

well he could have fallen off the roof and shouted , "Catch me ..." before he petrified.

He could have shouted "Patrificus Totalus!"

Why do you think Fingers left the thing alone the first time around? A chicken-lizard sitting in a bunch of stones looking like it ain't afraid of nothing? Yeah, you leave that the heck alone if you want to live.
I'll confirm that. I was both impressed (and pretty disappointed) that Fingers recognized it as a cockatrice at the first post I ever made about it. :) I had THOUGHT it was pretty clever! The monster list is FULL of hybrids. This world just gives an explanation why. :D

I admit that, being relatively new getting back into RPGs, I have a very poor knowledge of fantasy monsters. I recognize the more obvious things (centaurs, giants, giant ants, spiders, etc), but otherwise I am oblivious. I thought Marullus did a great job with the description. Alas, poor Rhybek...

Sorry to spoil your fun, Marullus. :)

Some monsters are iconic. Dragons. Orcs. Pegasi. Medusas. Basilisks and cockatrice.

Speaking of PC knowledge of the bestiary, I was reading through old Dragon magazines earlier this week when I came across a "competition" module. It was structured like a Choose Your Own Adventure, but without any branching. You got a player sheet and a series of 20 rooms with options on what to do in each room. Players would be scored based on how well they chose their actions.

I thought it was interesting how much the module assumed that smart, experienced players would know what's in the Monster Manual. Pretty much the only way to win was with detailed knowledge of monster strengths and weaknesses—what many DM's would now "j'accuse!" as metagaming.

Different times, man.

To those work Fingers: any weapon with magic will harm a gargoyle, I believe. At least Irving's sword, which only casts light, did one of them in. Also, I believe the description in the book says they are only hot with magic items "like all undead," which, if true, implies they are undead.

Didn't Irving's sword also have a bonus?

Fingers has a magic spear. Markd has a dagger that might work, at least, though he has the most likely escape route (OTOH, maybe the gargoyles will chase him and leave everyone else alone. Hey, a guy can hope!). And...is that it for magic weapons in this group?

Markd's sword has a +1 for non-undeads, I believe.

I couldn't say for sure, but I don't think so. It was an heirloom item, so, at most it would have had 4001xp. The light spell would have been the first power. The second would have had to be +1 vs gargoyles if that was the case. Unlikely anyone would have chosen that, though.

Eh?
The 4,001 power is allowed to be a straight +1.
