EVENT: The Coming of Scatha - June 2021

'Blackjack' Amistad

Having coerced the dwarves to follow, the logger races ahead and after passing the gates uses his totem power to roar as a lion. He then closes to attack in melee, a powerful hit swinging his axe in thin air.

He doesn't expect the dragon to be fearful of the lion - like roar but it may distract the creature sufficiently.

Olaf charges into battle, swinging a chain above his head. It occurs to him that a magic weapon might have been useful. Ah, well. If ye gotta die, attacking a dragon with a length of chain sure be one way to do it, he thinks.

Even he knows better than to expect to entangle a huge dragon with a little chain, but maybe he can tie up a foot or maybe even close its mouth for a while. Maybe.

Idriss

Climbs from the slit trench to survey the scene. There is not a lot he can do to affect the dragon so he thinks laterally. Idriss collapses the small gazebo tent, uprooting the pegs and guidelines. He casts 'Floating disc' to appear inside the tent and it should loosely hold the tent draped over it, dragging on the floor. Idriss runs with the tent beside him.

He has a plan to use oil to set it on fire and cast in following rounds a levitation spell on it so that he can wave it under the dragons nose if he can get in position.

Ablesforth calls upon Eruanna to curse the dragon as it flies away towards the town, but it likewise fails, the dragon impervious to most of the magics thrown at it. Earc healed enough to begin regaining consciousness, Clay dives into a burrow. Idriss strikes the tent and prepares his floating disc, running after the dragon with grand plans in mind but finding himself significantly slower than both the dragon and the hasted horse and rider.

Foxy crests a swale, coming down into the throng of charging dwarves, the dragon swooping low as it sees the plethora of foes now before it. Foxy wheels and joins the charge, her horse riding amidst the throng of unarmored dwarves towards the dragon, catching back up with Amistad and Olaf. Amistad clutches his familial totem and roars at the dragon - a frightening sound not meant to emerge from human lungs - at the same time as the dragon rears back and looses a gout of flame that pours like a river of liquid fire over the charging host. Flames engulf Foxy, Olaf, Amistad, and the majority of the dwarves crisping their flesh and igniting their clothes. But even as it does so, the dragon breaks off abruptly... it appears something has indeed impacted the beast! It turns and flies off at full speed, leaving the flaming carnage of the battlefield behind, filled with the charred corpses of so many dwarves... and perhaps those of the adventurers...

Olaf, Amistad and Foxy: Save for 1/2 damage from dragon fire. If Foxy passes, she can be saved and healed. (If she fails, she dies.) If Olaf and Amistad pass they are still standing! if they fail they can be saved and healed.

Olaf dodges the worst of the flames. The liquid fire chars his armor. As he watches the dragon fly away, Olaf decides to keep his armor blackened as a reminder of his short battle with the dragon. He can shine it again when the dragon be dead.

After Earc regains consciousness, he pulls a potion from his pack and drinks it.

Then he will spend the next four rounds casting and holding magic missile spells...

Idriss

Uses the tent to smother the ground and burning corpses. He looks on in hope of finding folk alive. He will tend wounds and (hopefully not) but sweeps the ashes of the dead Flame of the North onto his floating disc, or body as appropriate and off to the healing Infirmary.

After making sure Scatha has truly departed, Able and Clay make their way toward the Carnage, looking to tend to wounds. They both wonder how long it will be before Scatha returns to exact his revenge.

That puts Foxy at a 7 to successfully save, right?

Rusty's math is correct. Foxy's manifold divine blessings save her life with 1 pip to spare.

The dragon's breath washes over the rushing crowd like an incinerator, charring exposed flesh, turning hair and beards instantly to dust, and setting clothing and garments alight. Foxy, charging on her brave steed towards the dragon's maw, takes the full brunt of the blast as she leads the attack. All who witnessed the savage violence of the dragon's immolation have no doubt that only her charred bones will remain. Idriss rushes onto the field, tent canvas flapping behind him, and inspects Foxy to find that by divine miracle, her breath remains within her! He binds her to stabilize her and rushes her off on his magical gurney to the Infirmary of Eruanna.

Both Olaf and Amistad, who are fast upon Foxy's magically-hasted heels, are within the magical fire as well, but are able to evade the worst of it, their hefty armor scorched but protecting their delicate flesh. Wounded but still standing, they chase the dragon's heels with axe and spinning chain as it turns to flee, but are unable to land a parting blow.

The dwarvish horde does not fair so well. Rushing onward as if possessed, they fail in their evasion of the flame. The majority of the ill-clad dwarves are burned beyond recognition, their beards now a dust in the wind. Those few that survived to bear witness to this slaughter weep over their kinsmen, pulling at the scorched tufts that remain to their faces. Ablesforth and Clay Weatherwax move among them, healing those that still have life, knowing that the many dead are beyond help or recovery.

Earc remains on the distant hill. He regains himself as the dragon wings off, narrowing his eyes and preparing further magics to injure the beast when it returns. Eventually his magic fades away and he exhales, reasonably confident that the dragon is not coming back this day.

Final narrations for the battlefield! Everyone survived the encounter to rejoin with the new expeditions that depart(ed) in two weeks time. The Infirmary offers magical healing to those injured in the battle so that everyone can be fully restored before that point.

Burntjack Amistad

For good measure he invokes his additional totem power to facilitate a giant leap (Jump spell) and throws his battle axe at the fleeing dragon. It is too far away to be hit but the logger beats his chest wildly like an enraged gorilla at the flying dragon.

He feels a little guilty to have almost coerced so many peasant dwarves to their doom and does what he can to help the wounded.

Runs at full pelt or even rides the blistered horse to get the knight in melted armour to the Infirmary and multiple doses of healing creams.

[Alethan]

Earc glares at the fleeing dragon as it disappears in the distance.

He uses some minor cantrips to clean the blood from his robes and stitch the holes made by the dragon teeth, all the while wondering what they might have awakened and how this dragon is going to reply to such an affront.

He shudders at the thought, then heads off to the infirmary to have his wounds fully healed.

Able pours water over the wounds to cool them, then carries an injured dwarf in his arms to the infirmary. What possessed ya to run out here with nothin' but yer town clothes on?he asks, bewildered.

Clay whispers prayers for the dead, hoping they passed with little pain and that their energy will flow back to the earth. He then assists the wounded to the Infirmary. He checks on Ms. O'Hare, letting her know he is glad she managed to avoid the fiery end that so many dwarfs shared. He leaves for Beith's Watch at the first convenient time, wondering if the dragon saw him on the battlefield, and if he should expect a visit.

For efficiency, if Olaf can fire:

"Ach! Ye better run!" cries Olaf. He grabs his crossbow and fires a shot at the fleeing dragon, but the bolt falls far short.

Exhaling in frustration, he surveys the carnage on the battlefield, helping who he can. It's a few moments before he realizes that the dragon burned his beard down to stubble. He covers his chin with both hands, as if suddenly finding himself naked.

(I'll allow it another shot in range of the crossbow, but not for the thrown axe. So, roll is valid, too bad it missed. )
