Something in the way those creatures were flying seemed odd enough, but the elf had no idea his internal queries would be answered so abruptly. Reacting as if the creature diving for him was like his miniature brethren, he attempted to duck and dodge the attack, but to no avail. As the creature sinks his teeth into Thurinor's shoulder, he releases a bellow of pain. "Haaarrrrgh!", followed by a hysterical sobbing fit? No, laughter? Peals of laughter, deliver through clenched teeth as the elf attempts to maneuver his body to peer into the eyes of his attacker.

Raising his hand, he begins the brief chant that he has practiced for so many years. "Nnifincty srafastisnal ABREDRNO!" In the final phase of his accompanying gesture, he identifies his target by bringing his index finger within inches of his attackers body, well clear of his own.

OOC: Thurinor is casting Magic Missile on clingy fellow. Glad to be here, everyone. :)

Stonjuz jumps off the ground about 3 inches. Raises a fist and raps on the turtle shell, causing the turtle to retreat the way turtles do. "We got ourselves more action Turtle!"
As fast as his little legs will allow (base move 60 for dwarves but he is tall for a dwarf), he will begin to run that direction, first clutching for his sling but realizing that his inefficiency will only cause him to lose one of his bullets out here in the open, he prepares to put the staff into use in defense of the stranger..

OOC not sure when his initial attack will take place ill roll now, can be ignored or held for next...
to hit w/Staff (2 hand): thaco 20 [1d20] = 6, Dmg (s,m) [1d6+2] = 3+2 = 5, Dmg (L) [1d6+2] = 6+2 = 8
but it wont matter with that kinda roll.

edited to state that stonjuz was NOT attacking the elf :D

Oz muses to himself that this party can't seen to go a day without something coming down at them, be it off a cliff or out of the sky. As he muses he moves into position and readies his bow to fire.

initiative [1d20] = 5

OOC: I am not sure how far away we are or about the rate of fire for bows. So I will leave the distance modifications to you if that's ok Varg. I am also assuming that the ROF for bows is 2 so here we go.

To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 17+3 = 20, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 1

His first shot flies straight and true, but as the giant creature whirls away at the last second, the arrow but grazes it.

To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 3+3 = 6, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 8

His second arrow fires strong but flies wide.

(hit, I am guessing, min damage. Miss, I am guessing, max damage... Sigh  )

Bats in full daylight? Andrin is puzzled. He realizes that these here are of the giant specimen, but he knows full well that most of them have the same
living customs than their smaller brethren. And bats who come out while the sun is up are something that he had never seen before.

While Andrin runs to get closer, he fumbles for his sling and pulls out a handful of stones from his pouch.

OOC: Andrin will use this first round of combat to reach a good spot for shooting at the bats.

Unsure about his standing, Malone will spend a minute moving to find a better angle to fire from. Pulling his bow from his back he sighs to himself, "Still not birds..."

Day 2 - Mid-morning - The Icy Valley/Southern Snow Fields

Musical Theme: Elf vs. Bat

Round 1

The infallible magic missile leaves Thurinor's fingers and slams point blank into the alpha-bat in a pulse of orange-yellow potency. The beast feels something not felt since its spawning, a pain different from any other, not caused by claw or bite or blade but seared with eldritch fire.

Monster Morale Roll: [1d100] = 50

The bat straddling the elf emits a very high-pitched wail, almost out of the hearing range of even elven ears. As if in response the members of the circling pack above move their wings slightly and begin decreasing their speed.

Then the arrows start flying...

The first of Ozborn's shots transfixes the wing of one of the bats. The arrow passes the membrane fully and continues its ascent for a moment before tapering down and being lost from sight. The creature does not same too fazed by the puncturing. His second arrow flies wide and misses.

The first of Ogirdor's arrows flies smack into the black body of one of the bats, and his last misses another by less than a handspan. The wounded bat jolts in mid-air, wings a-folding and begins a plummeting descent to the ground; where it crashes in a most painful manner.

Malone also aims for a bat with his bow. The arrow misses by hand's breadth, coming so close to the creature's head it almost looses its bearing.

Meanwhile Andrin, realising the distance between the party and the bats is too much for suitable attack with sling, moves towards the pack (effectively trailing Stonjuz) until he is positioned just three dozens of feet away. He then readies the sling for firing.

Andrin will not have any negative distance modifiers when he slings the bat.

Unlike Andrin, Stonjuz does not stop his mad charge towards the brawl between the elf stranger and the pack leader. A brave effort, but a futile one as his staff fails to connect with the clinging and flapping victim. But in all fairness, he was attempting to spare the elf from any untoward caress by his staff even while trying to dislodge the troubling bat.

Hoping that the ranged fighters can down more of the beasts, Stonjuz will continue his assistance up close to the elf, trying to get the normally nocturnal mammal dislodged by grappling with it.

Stonjuz will attempt a grab by the back of the wings, pull and hold at the shoulders.
"Now don't you fret none little fella. Don't make this any harder than it 'hastabe'. I'm not gonna hurt ya...unless ya dont co-operate"

grab thaco 20 [1d20] = 17

"Now that I got ya, haha...what am i gonna do with ya?" Stonjuz's confidence turns south just a touch, but Thurinor can get an upclose gaze into the eyes of the bloodthirtsy creature as the dwarf pulls it away.

OOC I hope. And if that does work, it may require strength check to hold it? I'll post one just in case

str [1d20] = 7

After finding a closer position. Malone strings his bow and fires a sheaf arrow at the bats.

To Hit with shortbow Sheaf Arrow: [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17, Dam(s/m): [1d8] = 7, Dam(l): [1d8] = 7

Then another, moving closer to the elf.

To Hit with shortbow Sheaf Arrow: [1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15, Dam(s/m): [1d8] = 6, Dam(l): [1d8] = 1

ooc: One last round, one this round. thaco is 18

First an enormous bat and now a half-crazed dwarf?, thinks the elf as he draws his dagger from his waist and his smile broadens. Thankfully, the staff swings wide. The searing pain in his shoulder and the sight of archers in the distance, shooting arrows into the diving bats help to make his decision about who he should focus on. With a gurgle, he attempts to thrust his dagger into the neck of the attached beast without impaling himself in the process.

OOC: Are there any bats left? Those to hit rolls of you guys are amazing! :D

IC: Andrin puts a stone into his sling and shoots it at one of the bats (if there are any left to shoot at, that is), but sees that it misses by far.

Sling, to hit: [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3

Day 2 - Mid-morning - The Icy Valley/Southern Snow Fields

Round 2

Party Initiative: [1d6] = 2, NPC/Monster Initiative: [1d6] = 3

Malone: 4, Ogirdor: 5, Andrin: 4, Ozborn: 5

Since missile users are not specifying targets I will make random rolls to see which bats are hit by successful attack rolls.

Both of Ogirdor's shots come true.

# of Bat Hit: [1d3] = 2
# of Bat Hit: [1d3] = 1

His first arrows lodges into a bat, and the second spectacularly drills into the head of the bat that just moments ago had its wing holed by Ozborn. It falls without a sound to join its broken companion below.

Ozborn also looses two arrows but neither hits a target.

Malone's shot, alas, also misses.

Andrin spins his loaded sling and lets loose a bullet at the bats above, but the momentum of the throw is insufficient to carry it to any of the beasts.

The only remaining unharmed giant bat spurred by sight of its companions dropping like flies, the screech for aid emitted by its leader, and animal instinct, now makes it move. It swoops down not in the direction of Stonjuz, Thurinor and its boss but towards the land-thing that tossed a rock in its direction...Andrin.

Giant Bat Attack Roll: [1d20] = 3, Damage: [1d4] = 3

Fortunately, having enough foresight of the attack the elfin druid easily shifts away from the flight path and the giant bat flies through without hitting him.

Its wounded companion...

Monster Morale Roll: [1d100] = 70

...is flying around with an arrow-end sticking out of its gut. It decides discretion is the better part of value and begins to flap away northwards. Let the leader and the other one sort things out.

As this is all happening, the alpha bat is clearly not amused by Stonjuz's attempts to dislodge him from the elf stranger, and snaps back at this new irritant.

Giant Bat Attack Roll: [1d20] = 12, Damage: [1d4] = 1

The beast's jaws clap on the dwarf's wrist drawing blood, even as with a mighty heave the priest of Boccob manages to pull it off the elf's back. Both dwarf and bat tumble into the snow in a heap, flailing and wrestling, the vast bat wings half-enveloping Stonjuz like a dark brown blanket. By the time Thurinor draws his dagger and regains balance the dwarf and the bat are already trashing on the ground a few steps away.

Edit: The current tally is 2 dead bats, 1 wounded and getting the heck out of dodge, 1 unscathed and flying about, and 1 wrestling with a dwarf of the ground.

Moving on to Round 3. State your Actions and make your rolls. The GM will take care of initiative.

OOC not sure anything i could do will change anyone's post nor roll, so ill post round 3 action.

IC : At the risk of more damage from the bite to his wrist, during the wrestling on the ground, he will attempt to extend his arm with the creature above him str [1d20] = 13 leaving less chance as possible to take damage from an arrow or blade...while trying to brush it off with the other. dex [1d20] = 16
if it isnt dex, attack roll perhaps
brush off - thaco 20 [1d20] = 11
grunting out something like "KILL IT, RESEARCH BE DAMNED"

No need to attack those that are turning tail and running Oz thinks to himself. With that in mind he trains his bow on the last one still circling and lets fly two more arrows. Grimacing at his abysmal accuracy.

To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 3

To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 6+3 = 9, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 3

Malone takes one more shot at the unhurt bat. Then runs to guard the new figure.

To Hit with shortbow Sheaf Arrow: [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18, Dam(s/m): [1d8] = 1, Dam(l): [1d8] = 6
