Didn't the medieval clerics realize they were prohibited from using edged weapons? Who do they think they were, paladins?

EXACTLY. The nerve.

The historical Druid "scimitars" were actually more like longswords.

Medieval fighting clerics were forbidden to "shed blood" in war, so they went into battle with maces. Of course, being hit by a mace was possibly more fatal, but logic was not one of the outstanding features of the Middle Ages. I actually own a lovely (replica) 15th century flanged mace, given to me by my husband. I would not like to be on the receiving end of it. Ouch.

University students were mostly from well off families, and did not have the prohibition, since they had not taken vows yet. The church was a favorite place to "dump" younger sons, who would not inherit anything. It also kept them from killing their older brothers to gain an inheritance. Primogeniture was rough on siblings.

Urson: Kingdoms didn't have much for standing armies until much later. tThe second son might have gone off to serve a lord. Hence the warnings in Machiavelli's "The Prince" about using mercenaries.

Just so i'm clear, the ship that the guy with the telescope thing is on is actually 200' out in the river and not right on shore right? Is there any other boat beside that one?

The ship is too large to sail up river.

It is anchored 200' off the beach, where the river meets the sea.

There are no other boats around it.

If it's a good axe and a strong arm, you should be able to do that with one long stroke...
