Taking the tunnel down its natural course, the group is eventually lead to a dead end; however, the end of the tunnel is abrupt, having come to a stop by a flat wall of sorts. The group's lantern illuminates the small area and reveals that the wall is made of a smooth stone, a smoothness quite out of place in a roughly dug out tunnel like this. It is a wall that is not layered or cobbled together in any noticeable fashion, its only defining features being a strange a symbol inked onto its surface and its unnatural smoothness.

Search for Hidden Doors [1d6] = 1
The elf's keen eyes scan the flat surface, and Mehath's trained hands feel for changes in the stone. After a few moments, they find what they are looking for. Putting enough pressure on a section of the wall, it gives and triggers a hidden mechanism. The symbol found on the flat wall pulsates with a single burst of purple. The wall, in response, slowly shifts backward then collapses into the ground.

A lot of dust is kicked up into the air, and as it starts to slowly settle, those in front can see that the room revealed is just as dark as the tunnel, not a single light source found within.

With Elithil's infravision, a humanoid figure can be seen within the revealed room. The figure is still and doesn't seem to be moving. If you were to describe its position, it's in a defensive stance, its back facing the entrance.

After slowly approaching the figure in the darkness Elithil can spot something just beyond it, a raised pedestal of sorts. If the pedestal were situated in the center of the room, then you could say it was 50ft away from the entrance you just emerged from. Nothing can be seen laying on the pedestal.

Akabel slowly follows Elithil into the room, his shield raised as he scans the immediate area revealed by the lantern light in his group. The room is of noticeably different architecture, built into the earth by expert hands. The ground is level and you notice a few scorch marks in the area, some surrounding the figure that Elithil saw earlier. The light from your lantern stretches out about 30ft in radius but does not seem to reach the far edges of the room.

The figure turns out to be a man carved out of stone, raising a weapon held low in a parrying stance. The features are lifelike in its detail, the traveling cloak looks as if it could be slipped right off. Moving the group slowly farther into the revealed chamber, those in the group slowly wrap around the statue and get a better look at it. The stone statue has the face of the trader from the inn, that Moldevay of the Mentzler Trading Group.

Actions?

I will have a map of the revealed chamber up, either today or tomorrow, leaning more towards tomorrow.

"Careful," says Elethil. "I suspect that this statue was not made by hands. Something is about that can turn men to stone." He stops and listens for anything that might be about in the cavern.

As if in response, the echoes of sound, other than your own can be heard in the chamber. The flapping of a wings, the scraping of claws, and the sound of growling can be heard within the shadows, just outside of the group's lantern radius. Another sound can be heard, this one faint but steadily growing louder. It is the sound of footsteps.

Here is a map of the current room you are in. If no one says anything about carrying the lantern with them, it will remain on the ground. Each square on the stone floor grid is 10ft.

Mehath can hear the sound of rapidly approaching creatures from the left and right. Mehath has heard these sort of growls before, back in the forest. "Hellhounds," Akabel says, coming to same the conclusion as he raises his shield to receive the first attack.

"There are two in the darkness ahead, one to the left and one to the right, and a bird-like creature just north of the pedestal. Watch your flanks, everyone!" With his elven eyes, he is able to see the creatures in the darkness and confirm that the two beasts on the ground are hellhounds. As for the bird... it has a strange snake-like body to it. Suspecting that it may have something to do with the statue, Elithil switches to his bow and knocks an arrow, aiming to shoot the creature down.

Flynn, not being able to shoot what he can't see, refrains from using his bow and switches to his rapier, taking up the statue's right in anticipation of a hellhound attack (a defensive stance with intent to parry).

I will provide combat rolls once Mehath's and Eric's are in. I want to give Zhym a chance to roll for his character if he is able to do so. If Friday arrives and no one has posted, I will continue the action and provide rolls for the NPC'd characters.

Here's a pitiful roll. I think I'd rather you had done it. :)

Long bow of distance (THAC0 16): [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7, Dmg: [1d6] = 1

Entering the dark chamber revealed by the stone wall of peculiar design, the group find themselves in a room filled with hostile beasts. Though Elithil was able to alert the group to the creatures' advances in the darkness, thus foiling their surprise attack, the creatures still managed to get the upper hand in striking first!

Elithil warned of a creature that looked like a bird and was likely the cause of the stone statue. Using this knowledge, Eric prepares a druidic spell in the hopes of temporarily charming the creature over to his side. He takes cover behind the statue and waits for the flying creature to appear. Anticipating a quick enemy attack, Akabel raises his shield and effectively blocks one incoming hellhound. Mehath, ready to receive the hellhound as well, slices at it with his longsword. The hellhound recoils back in pain and growls. The blade cut deep.

Flynn, also readying himself to receive a dog from hell, enters into a defensive parry stance and waits for the hellhound to arrive. It does so with haste but misses its chance to harm Flynn. The swordsman, in turn, parries the strike. He fails his riposte strike, but with a swift slash of his rapier, he draws blood from the hound and sends it staggering back.

The cockatrice swoops in and tries to attack Elithil, but misses. With an arrow readied, Elithil shoots at the flying creature as it makes its pass, but finds that his arrow misses as well! Fortunately, for everyone, Eric's spell finishes and it seems to work! The cockatrice slows its descent and lands gently onto Eric's held out staff. It coos and awaits orders.

The sound of distant footsteps grow louder, you hear it pick up speed. It seems to be coming from the back of the darkened chamber.

The hellhound that attacked Akabel is right to his left. The hellhound that attacked Flynn is to his right. The cockatrice is now perched on Eric's quarterstaff.

Actions?

Combat Rolls:
[1d6] = 3 With Elithil's init bonus of +1 bringing it up to 4.

[1d6] = 6 Enemy's group init roll.

The enemy group goes first.

Hellhound 1, attacking Akabel [1d20] = 2 ... fails to hit.

Hellhound 2, attacking Flynn [1d20] = 4 ... fails to hit, and get's parried!

Flynn's rapier strike with a +4 [1d20] = 18 ... its a hit!

OOC: Sorry about the delay.

Eric takes a moment to get to know his new friend and things move forward around him. "Nice turkey." He digs out a snack for it.

Going with the last round's init, hellhounds strike first again. The first hellhound tries to attack Akabel, seeing that he is now lowering his shield. Unfortunately, the hellhound doesn't make much progress through Akabel's plate armor. Akabel, in turn, tries to bat the hound away with this mace but misses whilst attempting it at an awkward angle. Mehath has a better time of hitting his target using his dual slash combo but only after missing his first strike.

On the other side of the pedestal, Hellhound 2 fires a gout of flame from hits mouth, aimed straight at Flynn! However, the swashbuckler, nimble as he is, is able to sidestep the breath attack in time as well as fit in a strike of his own. It is Elithil that delivers the finishing blow to the hound.

One hound remains, and the cockatrice is now getting acquainted with its temporary master. The source of the approaching footsteps emerges, revealing a robed man holding a lantern in one hand, and a book in the other. It is none other than Brother Bolden! He does not, however, appear happy to see you. "W-...what in the blazes is going on!?" He shouts with a shaking voice. "That thief had friends?"

Combat Rolls:
Hellhound 1... [1d20] = 2 misses.
Hellhound 2... [1d20] = 19 hits Flynn with a breath attack!
Flynn's saving throw against breath attack... [1d20] = 19 is a success!
Akabel swings his mace and... [1d20] = 3 misses!
Flynn slashes at Hellhound 2... [1d20] = 17 and hits!
Flynn's rapier damage... Flynn's Rapier damage [1d6+3] = 6+3 = 9 and hits!
