Action Thread 5
Action Thread 5
Day 1– In the complex - 5:14am
MO updated.
Elwita leads the group down the quiet hallway. It is real quiet. The hall and stair are only 5’ wide, so single file it is.
As they pass that alcove Phanstern sees that they are tightly sealed and dusty. The wooden staves are stained a dark brown. If there’s oil in there, it’s a ton of it!
Elwita gets to the bottom step, which means that Elwita, Eljayess, Freda and Ogre (in that order) are actually in the stairwell, with Blodgett and Phanstern at the top of the stairwell, and Delgath and Kayen right around the corner. Now that the lantern and the torch have been brought to bear, the room is definitely bare, except for a door on the opposite wall. In the middle of the room is a 4’ or so large mound, of what looks like gray-green rags of clothing and tarry ropes. The air is a bit humid in here and smells a lot like sweet syrup. But the thing that really gets you all is the flies. You’re used to flies in your line of work, but this room is infested with them.
I’ll stop you there to check on Weapons in Hand for folks, I updated that Elwita has her crossbow out. Also not sure if Phanstern is going to do anything with the barrels so I didn’t want to push forward without checking with everyone. Players map updated with MO sorta on there. viewtopic.php?p=13765#p13765

Re: Action Thread 5
Do we have time to check a barrel? Phanstern whispers, drawing a dagger to break a seal on the nearest container. This much oil could be to our advantage. (Swats at a fly.)
Re: Action Thread 5
Blodgett keeps his short sword ready.
"Sir, our research shows that the bird is equal to or greater than the word."
Re: Action Thread 5
Freda silently sheathes her sword and shoulders her shield. Then she nocks an arrow, aiming it directly at the pile of rags.
"Ready...", she whispers.

Re: Action Thread 5
Wretched seals! This will take too much time, or cause too much racket. (Again shooing a fly.) Phanstern sheathes his dagger and pouts a bit.

Re: Action Thread 5
At the back of the line, Kayen frets, sword a-ready and wishing progression was swifter.
Re: Action Thread 5
Eljayess approaches and stirs the pile a bit with the tip of her spear, quickly backing away from the cloud of insects she interrupted.

Day 1– In the complex - 5:15am
.
Elwita leads the group into the room, the flies are really concentrated in here. As the four of you move close to the pile, and Eljayess reaches out to poke it, Freda calls out ensuring that no one is surprised by the tendrils shooting out from the lumpy pile in the center of the room. These tendrils are disturbing the flies, but they are striking out towards you. Still uncertain as to what they are fighting the companions prepare for the attack.
I’ll need initiative from someone, and then everyone can call actions (with corresponding rolls please) for round one.

Initiative: [1d6] = 6
If he can Blodgett will attack the tentacled thing with his short sword:
To hit: [1d20] = 8, damage short sword: [1d6] = 3 (medium opponent)
boo, hiss!

Re: Action Thread 5
Hopefully Freda can get a round off before any initiative checks per she had her ranged weapon out and sighted on-target? If not, then she'll have to adjust somewhere, as she is leery of ranging into a melee where there is a chance of hitting others.
To Hit, Missile (THAC014) [1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18
Damage, Arrow [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7
'Bout TIME this ranged-specialist got a good ranged hit in!

Per GM PM, Freda-the-ranged-specialist gets off two more arrows before the others can respond to the threat.
In a rapid flurry of activity, she follows her first arrow into the mass of tentacles with two more...
To Hit, Missile (THAC014) [1d20+3] = 19+3 = 22
Damage, Arrow [1d6+2] = 6+2 = 8
To Hit, Missile (THAC014) [1d20+3] = 11+3 = 14
Damage, Arrow [1d6+2] = 5+2 = 7
Yeah... take that, Mr. tentacled pin cushion.

Elwita, having had her crossbow loaded as well, lets loose her bolt in time with Freda (regardless of whether 'Mr. tentacled pin cushion' is still alive).
To hit with heavy crossbow [1d20] = 14
Damage with heavy crossbow [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

Assuming there is enough space to walk by, Kayen tries to make is way into the room as soons as he hears the cry and sounds of battle.
Re: Action Thread 5
Sorry, yes, I missed my misseleers. But the missiles can get off at the beginning of this round. Then you can pull the old drop and draw for next round.
Hmm, that sounded a little suspect for a family board.

Dredd turns to face backwards - we arent getting jumped from behind on my watch!
As soon as its clear he gets into the L junction formed by the top of the stairs and back the way we came so he can see both the party and behind us.

Re: Action Thread 5
What? What's that? Phanstern tries to see what's happening, but decides against throwing a spell into the area where his friends appear to be in melee.
Re: Action Thread 5
Eljayess keeps the thing at bay using her spear, giving ground if necessary.

Day 1– In the complex - 5:15am
Round 1
Acererak hasn’t logged on in a couple days. I’ll NPC him for right now, but he may not know this thread exists, so I’ll PM him too.
Whatever this thing may be, it’s not faster than you four! You get the beat on it.
Doing her best imitation of Crow, the elf from Hawk the Slayer, Freda gets off three beautiful shots, in about the same time that Elwita can get off a crossbow bolt. Four thwits are heard as all missiles strike the creature, though they don’t seem to go in as deep as the missileers felt they should have. Also, what the heck was “thwit”? It felt them, but doesn’t seem to be in much pain, and presses the attack.
Blodgett is able to rush in the center (his four comrades split off two to the right and two to the left) and attack with his short sword, but his attack is wide, and slices nothing but air.
Eljayess pokes at it with her spear, but all it seems to do is get stuck to the darn thing. She yanks at her spear, able to pull it free, and spurring her friends on to kill the creature!
Ogre slashes with sword and manages to cut into it twice! His sword making nice satisfying gash marks in the creature!
Dredd ensures that no rear attack comes, while Kayen is frustrated because Blodgett took the last spot to melee with the creature.
The creature itself lashes out tendrils to the crew surrounding it. No less than 6 thick tendrils reach out and strike. Elwita is able to just avoid a tendril, she see’s it’s covered in sticky sap. Eljayess is hit (taking 2HPs of damage) and the tendril sticks to her, somewhat inhibiting movement, but not enough to hinder attacking the creature. It hits similarly Freda (with quite a roll) and Blodget with similar sticky effects. Freda takes 3HPs of damage and Blodgett 2HPs. The creature misses its attack on Ogre and its sixth tendril flaps away at nothing, almost missing the air around it.
The folks with tendrils stuck on them, feel the darn things start to burn.
The sticky tendril is annoying but isn’t really stopping movement at this point, though those stuck can’t run away. For Round 2 everyone can call actions and attack if they so feel. I’ll need one initiative roll. I used Round 1 as the “extra attack” round for specialist, so you’ll have to wait until Round 3 to get those attacks again. HPs updated below.

Elwita quickly tosses her crossbow aside. "Lemme at dis' thing!" she says. Her trusted hammer now in hand, she brings it crashing down on the tree-like foe.
To hit with +2 War Hammer* [1d20+4] = 17+4 = 21
Damage against S/M with +2 War Hammer* [1d4+6] = 1+6 = 7 ooc: Note, if this creature is large, subtract one point of damage.
