Mai goes with Jonas.

Once they are out in the daylight, Mai removes the stone and begins a more thorough examination of it- holding it to the light, looking through it, testing it to see if its magnetic, and examining it thoroughly with bare fingers to check for engravings that may not be visible.

What in the hell is this? This is 1E mister! :D

Mai examines the stone closely, flipping it through her fingers and holding it up to her eye.

She doesn't notice anything out of the ordinary about it. It looks like it might be jet.

This is a slightly foggy old guy who's involved in about 4 different systems right now.

I have found nothing remarkable about the stone- One who knows magic should examine it. If anyone wishes to have it, you may. Until then, I shall keep it.

Mai puts the stone back in her pouch.

While the group is waiting, Doubtful goes outside to the well, curious if there may be anything down the well out back. He hopes his cantrips will allow him to better deal with the snake down inside. He will anchor a rope up top and then slowly ease down the well, keeping a close eye out once near the bottom.

Jonas asks Mai for the piece of Jet. Hey, there Mai, I'll keep hold of the stone... maybe if the Jet does contain some sort of magic, its properties could be revealed while I study these texts. Jonas holds the stone tightly in his left fist and begins reading.

Jonas takes the stone away from Mai and grasps it firmly in his hand as he starts reading through the books text. Nothing happens.

Doubtful goes rogue and decides to take a closer look at the well. He ties off a rope and begins descending into the stone shaft. normal Dex check please

Doubtful has a hard time keeping his hold on the rope. Since he is all alone, with nobody to help him with his descent, he eventually loses his grip and falls to the bottom of the narrow well. He splashes into the shallow water below, landing awkwardly (4 dam) but maintaining his upright position and keeping his head above the waterline.

As soon as he hits the water, he spots some tell tale movements below the surface, indication that he is, as expected, not alone in the shaft.

Proceed carefully, Jonas. I know little of magic- the Emperor declared it an unfit career for a woman- but I know that it can turn in the hand faster than a dull knife.

Jonas winks at Mai...Unfortunately, I feel no different than before I held the stone. I guess, I'll have to further study these books.

Forgetting his battered body and pains from the fall the druid immediately relaxes his body and softly recites the soft words of his cantrip: soothing. He continues this recitation as his body gently floats and he clears his mind to be receptive to whatever wild creature he now shares space with. There is no rancor, there are only living creatures sharing the space of this natural world under the light and benevolent face of Pelor. The soothing cantrip is repeated over and over and the druid relaxes in the water, allowing for the other to come in its own time.

After the initial shock of the fall, the druid immediately calms himself while reciting soft, mellow tones as he bobs calmly at the top of the water. The aquatic snake that calls this well its home creeps around under the surface until it comes into contact with the humans form. It begins slithering and sliding its 3 foot length all over the body of the man, entwining all around between his arms, legs, and torso before also becoming quite calm and uninterested in this new form that wants to share its living space.

The water in the well is about 4 feet deep and feels quite cold.

Inside the house, Keilif spends his time going over every inch of the mansion while Jervis continues his turn at lookout. Neither of the young men find anything of interest, in the home or out on the water.

Mai and Jonas continue paging through the books and examining the stone. Jonas thinks that there might still be a salvageable spell or two in the smaller tome that haven't yet been ruined by the water damage and rot.

The afternoon rolls on......

After a time, Mai glances around. Where is the one you call Doubtful?

Doubtful begins searching the well (walls, underwater as well), not interested in treasure so much as seeing if there are any secret passages or possibly portals down here that could lead to underground tunnels, also searching for any debris that could offer clues to the mystery at hand. He moves slowly and maintains his soothing tones so as not to alarm the snake. In fact, If he can stack debris to create a stable flat surface above the water line he will do so for the snake to have a sunning spot- at least at high noon each uncloudless day.

The soaking wet druid continues his relaxing tones as he searches around at the bottom of the well. He finds a small area where a couple of the bricks in the wall are missing, likely a means for the snake to come and go at its leisure. Other than the broken pail and rotted rope, there is nothing else below the water line. Nothing of interest or value is found.

The climb back out will require a normal Strength check.

Jonas carries the newly acquired spell books outside. He finds a secluded spot on the grass to relax on while listening to the surf hitting the rocks. Jonas carefully opens the smaller book to begin studying it and possibly gain some insight about the mage and what he hoped to accomplish in Salt Marsh.

Doubtful

The druid climbs back out of the well, feeling remarkably refreshed from the cold water before and now the warm sun beating down.
He isn't disappointed having not found anything in the well as he is glad that he can now put that suspicion to rest. After drying off he goes back into the house. He checks on each party member and then goes down into the caves to work on their preparations for the smugglers.

Mai had just begun to worry about the Druid, and greets him with a small smile and a bow when he climbs out of the well. You are well, my friend? Good.

She will go with him to move gear in the caves and otherwise prepare for 'company'.

In response to Mai's question, yes, I made a new friend and made sure there was nothing down in the well we needed to know about...it would make a great secret entrance after all and earlier the snake chased off our first explorer.
