Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Shall I assume Bromric's shouts do not awaken Gilgamesh in time to act this round?
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Not this round! Everyone (rolled separately) will have a 50% chance of waking and acting next round, and a 100% chance of waking and acting the round following.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
The party gets extremely lucky!
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 1
Perthrin's arrow disappears into the darkness with a zip, while Bromric takes up his arms and awaits the arrival of the massive spiders to do his bloody work. He steps forward at the last minute, meeting the first spider as it mounts the log that forms one side of the camp with a broad and powerful sweep of his runed blade. He catches the creature just behind its head, cleanly separating one part of its body from the rest and spattering his tunic with its gooey ichor. (poor thing had a low HP roll, and it suffered the consequences!)
The remaining two spiders leap forward to attempt to overtake Bromric as he interposes himself between the arthropods and the sleeping party. He hops back down off the log, raising his shield above his head to provide the smallest possible target, and finds his gambit successful as the two giant spiders lash out with their forelegs and mandibles but close on empty air or brush against his shield.
Spider attacks [1d20] = 10, [1d20] = 4, and [1d8] = 6, [1d8] = 5 damage
Meanwhile, on the ground, the dwarves Yusuf and Gilgamesh begin to stir slowly from their deep sleep, while Kennit rubs the sleep from his eyes and perceives the immediate threat in the flickering of the low campfire. (Kennit can act in the next round, Yusuf and Gilgamesh need to wait until the round after)
Awake? (1-3) Kennit [1d6] = 3, Gilgamesh [1d6] = 5, Yusuf [1d6] = 5
Combatants:
Spider 1: asleep, away from camp
Spider 3: uninjured
Spider 4: uninjured
Actions and initiative!

Do the Spiders make a morale check? They lost 50% of their number.
Bromric continues to stand at the forefront, trying to keep the two spiders on him and away from his rousing companions. He roars a dwarven battle cry, continuing to try to intimidate the creatures and slice them down. His beard is wild over his nightshirt and reaches almost to his unclad knees, as he unplaited it while sleeping.
Sword [1d20+4] = 1+4 = 5 [1d8+4] = 8+4 = 12

Seeing his companions waking, Perthin slips over to the sleeping spider to kill it. He sets his spear at the base of where is head should be and drives the spear downward with his lackluster strengthen and weight.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Oh yeah, thanks for the reminder--they succeed at their morale check.

Kennit awakes to see the party in mortal danger. He grabs for his sword, yelling at his comrades to wake.
Initiative: [1d6] = 3
Attack with goblin sword: [1d20+1] = 4+1 = 5, Damage: [2d6c1+1] = 2+1 = 3

Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 5
The two spiders clamber off the log, launching themselves on Bromric, the most exposed of the bunch. The dwarf fights them off valiantly, shrugging to one side with his shield to keep the creatures at bay, but their many limbs are too much and he is grazed by the venomous fangs of the hairy brutes as Kennit rushes over to aid him. Fire burns in the dwarf's veins as the venom finds its trace, and, overcome for the moment, the runed blade drops from his nerveless fingers into the charred earth. (Bromric takes 3 damage, please make a Save Vs. Poison with a +2 bonus)
Spider attacks [1d20] = 18, [1d20] = 14, and [1d8] = 1, [1d8] = 2 damage
Kennit's thrust fails to strike the spiders, which begin trying to haul Bromric back up over the log even as his body stiffens and writhes under the effect of the venom, moving them out of his reach.
Perthrin, meanwhile, has flanked around the two spiders and finished off the sleeping one with a single spear thrust. He sees them begin to retreat up the log.
Gilgamesh and Yusuf have now struggled to their feet, fully realizing the extent of their danger.
Actions and initiative!

Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
In his years on the road, Gilgamesh long ago cultivated the habit of sleeping with his weapons handy, and his crossbow spanned. Leaping to his feet, he throws the weapon to his shoulder and lets fly at the retreating arachnids. When his bolt has been shot, he drops the crossbow and snatches up sword and shield.
Attack with crossbow: [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21, damage: [1d6] = 4
Question: are the spiders actually dragging Bromric off, or was that just narrative for flavor? And if so, can my critical make them release him?
If both answers are yes, I'll do that.
If not, I'll take max damage.

Just flavor! It's what they seem to be ready to do when they can act again, but it's not yet.

Seeing the spiders about to retreat with Bromric, Perthrin takes aim with his long bow and fires! His mangled face blushes in the darkness as he hears a fellow adventurer curse in pain, all memory of his recent accomplishment of slaying a spider have fled his mind.
Longbow [1d20] = 5, damage [1d8] = 1
Ugh! The roller really doesn't like this character!

Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Save vs Poison (8) [1d20+2] = 16+2 = 18
Bromric let's out a gutteral roar, a kiai from deep within as he pushes his stiffening limbs to move by pure force of will. He raises his shield against the spiders, grasping for his sword or his axe, whichever he can get to-hand for a blow against these abominations.
Was that color or a crit-disarm? If he can attack this round...
: Bromric attack [1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23 [1d8+4] = 6+4 = 10

Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
That was a rolled-a-1 fumble. You can pick up your sword and attack with it but it prevents you from doing anything else this round if you do.
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Ouch! Thanks, I missed that fumble. Yeah, whatever he's allowed to do. He's pushing to attack.

No worries--sometimes it's not obvious to me where I'm posting if things are waiting on me or not, so I just want to be explicit!
Re: Expedition - Bromric/Reclaim the Mountain - June 3, 1 VC
Enemy Initiative [1d6] = 1
The spiders, thinking they had easy prey in hand, seem caught off-guard as Bromric shrugs off the effects of the poison and stoops to retrieve his sword, shield raised once more above him. Yusuf, taking his axe in hand, rushes forward to save his companions and his liege.
From the rear, Gilgamesh's quarrel strikes true and deep into the left spider's thorax and the creature shudders with the impact. From the other side, Perthrin's arrow arcs up over the two spiders and grazes Bromric's shoulder, slicing through his tunic and drawing blood. (1 point of damage taken)
Friendly Fire: Kennit, Bromric, Yusuf [1d3] = 2
Bromric, still grinding his teeth, pushes his sword up through the bottom of the spider in front of him, skewering it. The creature's legs begin flailing wildly, nearly knocking over one or more of the combatants and keeping Yusuf at bay. The retainer circles around to one side of the remaining spider while Kennit closes in on the other, and both of them strike the creature, inflicting significant wounds on it.
Yusuf Attack [1d20+1] = 17+1 = 18, [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3 damage
Though near death, the creature still seems committed to getting out of the altercation with a prize, and it lurches forward to strike but finds itself faced with a forest of blades instead.
Spider attack [1d20] = 3, [1d8] = 8 damage
Combatants:
Spider 4: 3hp
Actions and initiative!
