Differing AC make it an unbalanced fight, don't mind someone trading dex for strength. Are folk using magic armour and shields?

Olaf has heirloom banded mail, a shield, and good dexterity.

Round 7:
Olaf reels at the hit...
Pick Axe (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 11+1 = 12 [1d8+1] = 5+1 = 6

Round 8:
...and answers with a solid blow of his own.
Pick Axe (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 [1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7
Initiative: [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3

Bandy Sandybanks

Round 8 init [1d6] = 3
Longsword [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 Damage [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2

Bandy staggers as the wooden pick hits him square in the chest. But he doesn't fall! And just barely misses returning the favor in the following round.

Round 9 init [1d6] = 6
Longsword [1d20+1] = 16+1 = 17 Damage [1d8+1] = 4+1 = 5
Dragon foot. Bamboo pole. Little mouse. Tiny boy.

Round 9:
Olaf barely dodges the attack, but it puts him off balance for his riposte. If pick-axes can riposte.
Pick Axe (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 6+1 = 7 [1d8+1] = 1+1 = 2

Round 10:
Pick Axe (THAC0 19): [1d20+1] = 10+1 = 11 [1d8+1] = 8+1 = 9

Too much AC? You're feeling sorry for all those monsters out there, aren't you? :)

Since this is body-blows with sparring weapons, I'm fine considering that a hit "in the armor" counts, and we'll speed this up by calculating everyone with AC 9 adjusted for Level, STR, DEX, and Shield.

The Hobbit and dwarf are fairly evenly matched - both skilled fighters and both strong and quick, dealing punishing blows to the body of the other. Olaf seems to have the initial advantage - his natural burliness as a dwarf allows him to one-hand his pick (is that a broken wagon wheel piece on a spindle?) along with a shield while the smaller Bandy two-hands his longsword.
(Bandy's target number is 10, Olaf's is 11)

Bandy, however, is quick off the start, bringing around a solid body-blow to Olaf's armor while he's still finding his way with the improvised pick. Olaf quickly repairs, both landing solid blows in the next volley. The pair becomes more wary, having both been struck, and several minutes pass as they parry and lunge, circling each other. Finally Olaf lands a solid blow, but Bandy ripostes with a headshot.

Lord Albrecht blows his horn. "The Half-ling perseveres!" he announces to the cheers of the crowd. They love an underdog.

Round 1: Bandy hit (5), Olaf miss
Round 2: Bandy hit (4), Olaf hit (2)
Round 3: Bandy miss, Olaf Miss
Round 4: Bandy miss, Olaf miss
Round 5: Bandy miss, Olaf hit (4)
Round 6: Bandy hit (7), Olaf miss

After a round of cheers and hearty congratulations to Bandy and "Well-fought, master dwarf!" honors to Olaf from the crowd, Wilhelm calls forth Halfpint and Blackjack Amistad to the ring. "Best of luck to you miss, may you do as well as your kin!" he says cheerfully.

The crowd assesses the pair as they take the ring. Halfpint has a clear advantage in her nimble nature but Blackjack moves with the assurance of a more experienced fighter. Both have the strength of arms to hold their own. They must choose their weapons - shortsword (d6), longsword (d8), or two-handed sword (d10) - where Blackjack gains further advantage for his size over the diminutive woman.
Blackjack needs a 9 (10 if Halfpint takes shortsword/shield) and Halfpint needs a 10 (11 if Blackjack takes a longsword/shield)
You can describe your armor and appearance in your posts.

Blackjack Amistad

Enters the tourney wearing an ancestral fur helm, made with a covering of animal skins and bright coloured silk toga. He does a little tribal wardance, much to the delight of watching children, beating his chest like Tarzan at the end.

"My Tigress, I honour your presence," he says bowing to his 'foe', before choosing a two handed weapon, a style he is most familiar though distinctly unaccomplished in.

Ha! No, I don't at all feel sorry for the monsters. It's just that a contest of skill should have base levels from which to judge. Like in the archery contest, all participants had the same target ACs. I just expected something similar for swords.

Halfpint sheepishly stands and acknowledges her opponent and the ring masters.

She wears her newly fitted banded mail and a shield hoping it provides enough protection from such a skilled foe.

Her first attempt to strike him is woeful at best.

Blackjack Amistad

Raises the two handed sword above his head and swirls a roundhouse cut that would have severed a man in half but cuts just above Half-pints curly hair.

Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 3+1 = 4 [1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8

He turns again to deliver another attack, keeping on the front foot.

Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8 [1d8+1] = 6+1 = 7

Powerful strikes but not accurate enough.

rd 2
Just feeling the power of the sword cutting the air so close to her, makes Halfpint lose her focus as she attempts a side jab.
short sword [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6; [1d6+1] = 2+1 = 3

rd3
And she still cant shake her horrible misses on the archery range, and now she is looking more like a court fool than a worthy adventuress. She tries again, with more desperation than accuracy in her swing.
short sword [1d20+1] = 7+1 = 8; [1d6+1] = 3+1 = 4

Blackjack Amistad

Heaves the heavy blade in another arc but the lass is just too nimble a foe to connect.

round 3) Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6 [1d8+1] = 4+1 = 5

round 4) Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 1+1 = 2 [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

all this exertion so soon after battling trolls leave him exhausted. Too slow to skip around, too weak to lift the sword properly, good job he ain't facing a proper tiger he thinks.

with a fumble roll, what penalty if any, an extra strike for Halfpint seems fair.

Ha... since she cant hit the ground with her sword if she dropped it, that would seem like a fair penalty :D

rd 4
short sword [1d20+1] = 9+1 = 10; [1d6+1] = 4+1 = 5
rd 4.5 if warranted
short sword [1d20+1] = 4+1 = 5; [1d6+1] = 5+1 = 6

rd 5
short sword [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3; [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7

Clearly halfpint's fear of such a legendary foe is affecting her swings. She keeps trying, hoping to not embarrass herself worse than she has already.

[3d6] = 10 CHA
(You're both rolling for 10, so that Round 4 is a hit for Halfpint!)

Both wary, the pair circle and strike, circle and strike, getting nothing but air for the first several minutes. The more bloodthirsty in the crowd begin to jeer, "They're wooden swords! They won't hurt THAT much!"

Finally, Halfpint lands a solid blow on the exotic woodsman (-5hp), who responds by fumbling and dropping his sword (which is easily twice as long as his opponent is tall). The crowd goes wild! A good "first blood" upset by the little lady.

Amistad quickly snatches his blade back into his hand, dodging a blow from the halfpint Halfpint as he does so... the fight continues.

rd 6,
hearing the jeers, even after she made the only contact so far, has really gotten under halfpint's skin. she swings wildly.
short sword [1d20+1] = 2+1 = 3; [1d6+1] = 1+1 = 2

I hope halfpint is getting her bad luck rolls all out during the festival.

Blackjack Amistad

First blood or bruise but the young warrior has plenty if fight left.

Round 5) Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 15+1 = 16 [1d8+1] = 2+1 = 3

He hits back, hits at least but not a knockout blow. Cleaving again he strikes downwards.

Round 6) dodging her wild swing and critically clubbing the little tiger. Greenleaf Melee [1d20+1] = 20+1 = 21 [1d8+1] = 7+1 = 8

Looks like a knockout blow landed.

Yep. A crit will do it.

Recovering from the fumbled weapon, Blackjack Amistad is now on his game. He dodges the halflings blow and lands a strike on her, then comes around with a mighty swing that knocks Halfpint completely unconscious.

The crowd gasps and goes silent. Brother Mylo and a few nurses rushing into the tourney ring to make sure she is okay and move her to the side. They tend to her and soon have her awake and back on her feet. The crowd exhales, relieved. Concern for the tiny woman seems to have overcome the victory of the moment.

Wilhelm raises his voice to try and get things back on track. "A mighty blow indeed! Blackjack Amistad of the Lion and Axe is the winner of the second round! Our congratulations to the brave challenger!" he half-bows to Halfpint before continuing, his strident cadence bringing the crowd back to the event to rebuild excitement.

"In round three, our first bout with a current town champion! Lady Zirina, mistress of the the Far Coast, defender of the North Gates! She faces the victor of the first round, more opportunities for the hobbits to show their mettle," he looks concerned at the match, trying to conceal a worried look for Bandy behind his smile. Zirina stands along the ring wall in custom banded mail and knee-high boots, an amazon-style warrior of the Far Coast. She looks humorless as she regards the contestants. She has been staring at Bandy for most of the last round of the tourney, fixed eyes studying him. As she is being introduced, she shakes her head, just once. A boy runs up to Wilhelm and Albrecht and there is a brief hushed conversation.

Wilhelm clears his throat and continues. "Ahem... A matter of protocol, it seems. Zirina, well, invokes the right of a champion to Seconds. She... well, she places Achaedany, one of her squires, in her stead." He turns to Bandy, face flushed. "Master Sandybanks, do you accept this substitution?"

Halfpint waves to the post, and numbly allows her helpers to escort her out of the ring. She needs medicine to stop the throbbing, nauseating headache. And a place to curl up and cry. She meanders along the streets looking for a place for either.
