How many coins did you have, which you put in the bag?

The goblin narrows his eyes, looking at the meager coins. He points with his shortsword at the goblin skeleton on the bed. "What're you doing with him? I take that necklace, too. Give it to me."

Idriss

-19gp, -4 sp. How many goblins are there, three or more?

Idriss tries to engage the goblins in a little more information gathering.
"oh, I thought he was the deified remains of your brave Captain. The guards still patrol outside of the cave because they fear you denizens inside. I would leave him in his place of honour lest he rises form the tomb and assail us." Idriss holds up soot stained hands form the fire, "I'm all dirty and will stain it but you take it off him if you dare".

Idriss moves a couple of the oil flasks to the mantel shelf and collects the 'teeth of ivory' for the swag bag and sweeps a few of the quartz crystals over to one of the archers. "Are you fetching a juicy lamb joint or leaving it to the others while you feast on rat bones?"

As the patrol leader edges into the room, the others fan out behind him. Two archers and two spearmen, plus the leader with his shortsword and round shield. The leader sneers at your groveling and cowardice, but seems to puff up slightly as he elevates his perceived status above yours. He crosses the room to the skeleton, ensuring the everyone keeps weapons trained on you to prevent funny business. He rudely snaps the fragile neck-bones of the skeleton and lifts the necklace, a greedy look in his eyes.

The archer quips back at you, "Lamb joint?" he scoffs, "I'd rather her hamhocks. She seems plump and juicy enough to roast." He eyes Foxy with hungry eyes.

The goblin patrol leader can't resist, he slips the necklace over his head. It constricts immediately - he makes impotent choking noises as his face turns an unwholesome purple, his fingers white-knuckled as they pull at the fatal jewelry. The other goblins break into chaos until one of the spearmen yells in goblin, "Leave him! Lets go!" and they turn, fleeing down the hallway from which they emerged.

The goblin continues to thrash and spasm on the floor before you, struggling against his last moments of life.

Idriss

Idriss is startled but not surprised to see the goblin choke and get strangulated. He thinks about sending a MM to the fleeing goblins but hesitates, hoping they will just run with their ill gotten gains. When dead, Idriss seats the goblin chief on a chair and positions him in the archway as if observing folk in the hallway. (Does he have the sack of GP or another goblin?).

In preparation for the goblins return or even some sniffer ghouls coming, Idriss makes a little ammo dump of oil flasks and rolls the table over. He will have a look at the incense sticks, any runes on them or identifying marks.

No harm in lighting one, at least keep the stench of shit and death away for a while. Check out the iron shortsword and goblin pair.

How is Foxy doing?

It is currently 4:00am. You need to make it to 1:30pm to get a recovery roll for Foxy. You'll get another every 24 hours at 1:30pm.

The goblins disappear, but every greedy even in their flight, they took the sack of your gold with them. You prop up the goblin leader, face frozen in purpled agony with the necklace tight around his throat, facing the hallway. You upend the table, making a defensible position that you can hide behind (-4 cover from ranged fire, -2 if hiding behind it in melee), and stock it with your oil flasks, the fireplace behind you for lighting them and in front of Foxy to defend her.

The incense sticks appear to be of the standard kind that you've seen in clerical temples - small rectangular blocks of sweet-smelling incense able to be put on a brazier. The light one and put it on the fire place - it emits an amazing fragrance and a pearly-hued smoke which brings a bit of calm to this awful situation. You imagine this would help a cleric praying for their spells even more. The shortswords are simple and serviceable, of goblin construction so unlikely to be of value in the human town. The sling appears well-worn but in excellent condition, having seem much care and use over the years.

You settle back in near the fireplace, letting its warmth sink into your bones in this otherwise cold place. About 45 minutes pass after the goblins leave when you hear scrabbling at the wooden door on the left wall, accompanied by snuffling sounds and feral hisses. This is followed by a thud as a body smashes into the door, which splinters it slightly and half-opens it. Through the partially-exposed doorframe you can see more than one of the 'sniffer ghouls' -- the half-headless creatures you saw before. You know the door will be easy to open the rest of the way in a moment.

No surprise for either side, you can take one action before the door opens, then declare another when it does open.

Idriss

Idriss is not much of a fighter, swinging his sword may kill one if he is lucky but two? Where is Foxy the Flame when He needs a heroine?

Of the three bunks in a line between the doors, I put Foxy in the one closest to the fire. Idriss will cast as his first action:

Floating Disc: causing it to pick up the newly dead strangled goblin in the chair and will force the chair against the 'sniffers' door. Idriss hopes it will block the door and the creature will grab at the smelly fresh body.

Second action would be to tip the next bunk against the door and try to barricade us off.

Have third and fourth actions but will be determined by success of hindering their entrance. Soak bed in oil and light, attack with sword, any sense the perfume of the incense wards the undead things away?

Just to clarify again on the disc -
"The disk floats approximately 3 feet above the ground at all times and remains level."
It doesn't scoop things up or set them down for you. It can carry it 6' in front of you, allowing you to offer the corpse without yourself getting into melee range. You could just as easily toss the goblin corpse to them and shove the bed with your hands to be a barricade, but I understand that your spell adds more flair. :) If you don't want to have used the spell and just used your hands for this scene, I will let you backtrack by saying so.

You push the goblin and chair against the door - the goblin body is snatched and hauled into the other room, where you hear a brief but ominous crunching and rending noise. Wasting no time, you shove one of the beds against the door as well. With the bed and chair, it is better reinforced and barricade... You dare to hope.

After a moment of frenzied, wet rending noises, the creatures are back at the door with greater enthusiasm. They slam against the door, but your barricade holds, giving you at least another round.

Open door [1d6] = 4

my apologises yes, I miss-read the spell description part , 'unless directed otherwise' but that is only pertaining to range. okay, let us move the furniture.

Idriss

"Okay, so this might be a confrontation of conflagration not consummation, well lets' see if this 'Alamo' can hold firm (must be a southern story of heroic daring-do, only with a better outcome...)" Idriss rambles on in his panic to safeguard his life and Foxys'. He will break a flask of oil over the bunk and light it with an ember from the fireplace. The next action would be to tip the second bunk (one with the goblin skeleton) on top of the first and then haul Foxy and her bunk beyond the table shield. Depending on how the fiery barricade either holds the sniffers back or burns them completely he will either make a stand with sword drawn or open the door to the room on the right and see if that leads to a better exit.

How many sniffers are there, feet, grappling noises, feasting, voices to indicate the numbers at the door?

You pour the oil onto the barricade, lighting it on fire. The flames lick quickly upward, making a barrier of flame as the solid barrier is slowly destroyed. They sniff the smoke and seem more excited, frenetic in their actions but still no sign of intelligible communication between them or indication of their numbers.

They scrabble at the door but it holds fast. Idriss flips the second bunk onto the first, the ancient bedding flaring up and fills the chamber with noxious smoke as the wooden frames and the door itself begin to char.

Idriss retreats behind the table, contemplating his options. They slam the door once more - this time it gives. Three of the creatures tumble inward, struggling against the flaming barricade to enter the room, horrific burns opening on their sallow flesh. One of the creatures is trampled by the other two, its body pushed down into the barricade as the others try to clamber over him like a bridge until his body is fully consumed by the flames. The other two, both bearing severe burns over most of their legs and parts of their arms and torsos, drop back on the other side of the barrier. It seems to have overcome their level of interest. With a disdainful sniff, and one last baring other teeth, they depart the other direction leaving the third one burning in the pyre and adding his noxious stench to the choking fume of the growing fire.

The creatures having abandoned their interest in him, Idriss sighs in relief, but then coughs on the smoke. Foxy breathes shallowly on the last remaining bed, less bothered as the smoke hangs above her. In another seven minutes, the oil has spent itself, the wooden bedframes smouldering where they've caught but no real flames rising anymore, a charred skeleton remaining where the sniffer once was, embedded on the top of the other side of the barricade.

An hour passes, the wood lessening from a smouldering to just smoking, the air beginning to gradually clear. Idriss resumes waiting anxiously for Foxy to awake. That is, until he hears a movement on the barricade. He notices raw flesh has covered the bones of the sniffer, and he sees it pushing itself free of the ashen timbers. It emits a wincing hiss of pain and drops onto the floor on the opposite side of the barrier and limps away after the others.

Four more hours pass and, thankfully, they don't return. At long last, Foxy stirs, her eyes fluttering open.

what are these creatures? Do they regenerate HP like trolls? I thought they might be some kind of undead or maybe have been affected by the fungus eating out their brains and then having a parasite type organism controlling their bodies. Idriss will check his book of circus freaks and other strange beasts to see if he can tell what they are.

am off soon, will do inventory check and then be ready for next actions. waiting on Foxy.

Idriss INT Check [1d20] = 15
It clearly suffered as it burned but then regenerated its flesh - even trolls can't do so from fire, though. Many undead are immune to some types of injury, but to feel all damage and recover to feel it again... this alludes to something worse. You wrack your memories for clues and come to one horrid conclusion. Too frightening to put in a freak-show act, tales were told among the circus folk on "true horrors" - that those humans who cavort with demons have their mind and will removed, converted to the basest form of demon, thralls in service to horrid masters. You always took it as a scare-tactic warning against infernal dealings, but perhaps it is literal.

Foxy O'Hare

Foxy coughs and splutters, the smoke causing her eyes to wince and her breathing to be pained. She winces at the fresh cut on her calf from the claws of the zombies and remembers falling into a meat chamber.

"I expected the guards to one day find me upside down like a lamb joint, stripped of skin and meat. Idriss where are we?" Foxy has a change of clothes in her satchel I think, so will use a bit of water to refresh herself and listen to Idriss recount his tales. How is she health wise?

Idriss

Thankful that Foxy wakes from her comatose state and his breathing, he will help her to stand and give her satchel belt accessories back. "Sorry, had to rummage through for bandages and stuff." Idriss relates what has unfolded with the zombies, rats, death of Wilbur, sniffer devil ghoulish brain-dead, goblin thieves and the cursed amulet...all in one long sentence.

Apart from a goblin skeleton and two flaming bunk embers, Foxy probably don't believe a word it sounds all too theatrical to be true.

Let's try the door to the right in the Alamo room. (Sniffers came from the left).

"Sorry Foxy, I left your bow behind, but you can take an axe or these short swords." Idriss has the one from the goblin skeleton. There was an iron one in a chest, comparing the two which is better, sharper, lighter?

Idriss takes up the bloody hand axe and the three goblin shortswords with frayed hilt-wrappings, comparing them. They all seem about the same - goblin-made and low-quality, without any particular magic to them. A leather sling and the remaining incense sticks are still in the chests. The quartz crystals on the table are not well-cut and likely have no value. The human teeth char in the fireplace where Idriss tossed them.

You check the stone door on the far end of the room (which the sniffers didn't enter through) and you find that it is locked, a keyhole opening into the heavy stone face.

Idriss

Will pouch the remaining incense and sling. If it comes to it, he can use the small crystals as ad hoc slingstones, he also takes the iron short sword and wields it uncomfortably.

"Heavy stone doors are there for a reason, I cannot pick the lock anyway. I remember the guards said the place was heavily trapped so maybe we should count our blessings and make out." As a second thought he will search the mantelpiece for any key or hidden niche in the chimney hearth. If nothing then move out.

Idriss strikes a fresh torch and armed with the short sword, carefully proceeds back down the hallway to the two doors at the end. (there are no other doors or exits from the hallway are there?). "That door leads to a devil mask room and lots of fungus and purple shriekers. The creepy eyes of the mask follow you but was otherwise silent. This door leads to a bedding room, had lots of rats in, this is where Wilbur died. After that is the landing and stairway up or corridor leading off. Maybe the goblins headed that way."

Are there any trail of dirty footprints from the goblins.

by my reckoning Idriss has 7 flasks of oil left and 5 torches plus one he holds. Foxy has her satchel back with personals and two more oil, correct me if I am wrong.

Foxy O'Hare

While Idriss checks out the other door and collects his bits and pieces, Foxy will remain on guard by the barricaded door in case these undead men/demon creatures come back sniffing. When ready to leave she will take the goblin shield and her scimitar and follow Idriss' lead out of the room. These creatures Idriss described were men sized not goblin sized, any inclination that they 'moved in' after the guards cleared the place out or they were present when the goblins habited the place?

"I am confused by dates and times, being stunned for so long. What would goblins be doing with demon worship? Maybe some proof of the 'corruption' needs to be found before the Duke authorises another delve here. Are the goblin in cohoots with dread mages doing demon worship?"

Foxy is reminded of the mage Longshadow and the trade they had with the goblins who fled from here and built the fortress in the hillside caverns. "Does Monoc mean anything to you Idriss?"

Idriss takes up the sling and incense, tucking it away, and wields the shortsword. Examining it, you see it is a blood-stained sling tooled with runes and a symbol of a flaming skull. He strikes a torch and heads down the hallway - the dust of the passage is very unsettled and there is no clear way to track the goblin's route.

Leaving your resting place behind, you head down the hallway in the torchlight. You face the two doors, both of them still closed, no others on the hallway.

You are unclear on how long the goblins were here, but the rooms here are very old - likely several thousand years - and not goblin made.

there is no shield.
