Dorvar buys 10 days of preserved rations and 2 days of unpreserved rations. (6gp 4sp 8cp deducted)

*Edit: I adjusted what Dorvar purchased after I had an opportunity to look up prices for what he actually wished to buy instead of copying what someone else had bought.*

Seadu Baldtop visits the town mason.

'Greetings, my good man, and get your pen ready. There is a meagre wooden building in town that I had erected last month. We wish to expand it into a more public space, with the addition of an impressive stone structure. We were thinking of calling it the dwarvenheim, which I think you will agree has a pleasant ring to it.

'We are prepared to hire five labourers to help you the construction to build a complex suitable for three individuals or couples as residents. There should be the usual accommodations: a small storage room, a kitchen, a dining hall, but also a meeting hall capable of hosting a dozen or more. In the meeting hall there should be ample space around the walls for the display of statues and trophies. I was thinking of setting the complex underground, with an appropriately atmospheric entrance leading down along a gently sloping ramp of flagstone. Sturdy torch sconces carved into the sides of the doorway, that sort of thing. Make it look effective but inviting. My colleagues may have other requests.

'Would 700 gold be sufficient? If we hire four labourers to help you, could you have it done in, say, 10 days?'

This is Seadu's proposal. Zhym, feel free to contribute your own ideas as you see fit:

600 gp for a 3-bedroom stone building
+100 gp to expand the 'living room' into a meeting hall
5 workers hired (mason + 4 labourers)

Basic time taken (60 man-days per 200gp) = 210 days
With five workers, the total time taken is: (210/5+1) = 35 days

Total cost: 700gp construction + 35gp wages = 735gp

The builders available are not especially good at underground work--they can do the structure as a basement level for an extra 100gp, or you can do it on ground level per your proposal. With Tbilisi support, they can do it in 15 days.

We wish to expand it into a more public space, with the addition of an impressive stone structure. We were thinking of calling it the dwarvenheim, which I think you will agree has a pleasant ring to it.
Bromric joins Seadu when he approaches the building site at a time when he is alone with the Mason and without Ulf. He offers some suggestions on stonework to be helpful, including supports and pilasters to better gird the basement to support the structure above. He points out into the center of the square, "I already commissioned a work for in that square; something to inspire the townsfolk regarding the victories of dwarves as they come. It will be a statue of the basilisk and tell the tale of the battle, of Constance's sacrifice, and of your re-birth. I wished a suitable use for all the extra basilisk teeth I collected."

He sighs, shifting the topic as their work with the Mason concludes. "As I said to you and Ulf earlier, I am glad to see something here for our kin, but that the vision is smaller than I wish. I'd rather create a place for dwarves to live as dwarves, rather than a building among men where dwarves can be remembered. I did not wish to disparage or dissuade Ulf further, so I left my first response to stand. I am surprised at his hammer-like insistence on the matter, to be honest, but I've known other Stronghammers in my time. Perhaps they don't know a second way." He pauses. "The ArchDuke's bounty for reclaiming and holding the dwarven watchtowers is a unique opportunity - I do not relish the idea of those outside of our kin taking and holding dwarven strongholds. It astounds me that Ulf would work so hard to undermine any effort that isn't his... it costs him nothing to look into these dwarven structures on our return and benefits all dwarves if we can establish such a place." He sighs and shakes his head again. "I deferred to you on the directions of this quest as his disrespect and insistence on compliance with only his own proposals is an issue. I cannot abide someone who would insult me, my capabilities, and my clan. I deserve respect." He pauses on that point, then continues. "I fear my efforts to establish a living space for our people will have no choice but to diverge from Ulf's efforts here, given his actions so far. I only wish you to know that I still intend a proper chapel of Feles at that dwarfhome, should I be successful, and ask that you provide your blessings to it accordingly."

As he prepares to depart, "As I said at the tavern, I shall have Gustav and be prepared to depart with the dawn at the gate. I hope to see you there."

From above, Ulf and Bromric's request and answer on supporting the Dwarvenheim.
Zhym wrote:Ulf Stronghammer, his armor still shining despite battle, most dents hammered out but one near the heart remaining like a trophy, seeks out Bromric on his return to town.

"Bromric Gorak-Okri-Elgraz-Endrinkuli, I have heard that you have plans to build a temple to Falles," he says. "I have spoken with others about a similar project: a dwarvenheim, a home for dwarves in the city, where we can preserve and celebrate our dwarven heritage. With so few of us left, it is all the more important that we preserve what we have, would you not agree? Would you be willing to discuss whether your project and mine might be combined? Their ends would seem compatible. "
Marullus wrote:Bromric stands taller and broader than previously, his posture and confidence both improved since you first met him. Beneath his cloak he wears gilded plate armor, both longsword hilt and battle axe visible poking above his shoulders.

He bows respectfully to Ulf. "Greetings to you, Ulf Stronghammer, and honor to your clan and ancestors. I respect your efforts, Ulf, and welcome any effort to aid our kin. I suggest speaking with Seadu, as he and Martin are the new priests of Felles and the construction of a temple will be guided by their insights. I am willing to aid and fund the effort, wherever it may be. I am not convinced, though, that we yet belong preserved in a museum. I intend to earn and hold land, summoning my kin to join us. It is better to live our heritage than to celebrate its memory. You shall be welcome to visit my halls as well."

Seadu Erana

'A basilisk statue! I am embarrassed Bromric, you shouldn't have.' He examines the square and the current location of his small wooden temple. 'Are the locations close enough to combine them together? I'd like to keep the building intact if I can, since I already put money down on it and haven't even used it yet. I was thinking it could work as a temporary temple to Falles until a better construction could be made. I suppose it doesn't have to be directly next to the dwarvenheim for now, and we can build next to or around the basilisk.'

He listens to Bromric and tries to scratch the whiskers of his chin, before remembering that he has none. 'Ulf is excited to finally reach the cusp of bringing this land back to the dwarves. We all are. I don't think any of us are interested in mere memorials. If that were my goal, I'd have commissioned a few marble statues and spend the rest of the money on barrels of wine to congratulate myself. Falles needs to be brought back from his slumber, and for that to happen his ways must become an active part of the living; there are already plenty of dead dwarves who still remember him. Any dwarfhome that is added to this land is a good thing, by my book. I'll do what I can to make sure that any dwarven hold that is rebuilt will have the dwarvenheim at Vaul as a home away from home.'

Orrin has added 100 gp to the project (post), so we'll need to revise the building plan. Current opening funds are at 850gp.

Starbeard, do you have any desire in micromanaging your project to the point of making a map? If so, I'm glad to accelerate the detailed construction guidelines I have in process to help you out. If you care more about the holistic result than specific control, I'm happy to manage the floor plan, etc.

Sure, I can make up a map. What are the floor plan guidelines on space allotted per 100gp spent, etc?

Seadu stops the mason mid-sentence. 'One second, my fine man. Bromric's structural suggestions makes me believe we should take the afternoon to sketch out a viable plan for the site.'

He leads Bromric through Vaul to collect Orrin and Ulf, and then prepares to draw on a blank writing sheet with charcoal chalk. 'As the highest donator I am happy to oversee the construction of this phase of the project, but you all are have also taken interest, and have a longer history of thinking about it than me. What would you like to see in the initial building? Be mindful that we have only 850 gold to build and pay the workers, and there is always the option to extend the building later.

'For myself, I thought a communal hall would be first on the list—for speeches and statues, that sort of thing—with the remaining funds going into as much housing as possible, with communal storages of food and equipment. The temple itself can wait until more funds come in, since I have already had a temporary building built nearby.'

"A communal hall is the essence of what I had in mind," says Ulf. "Orrin had a great idea that I had forgotten, which is that the building would not be a true dwarven hall if we did not have a hand in building it. We all have tasks taking us away from town soon, but perhaps we could throw our backs into the project when we return?"

Bromric paces this distance in the square. "I imagined it being here, a feature just outside the doors of the hall. If you'd wish it more integrated it can be placed differently. I thought to have the townsfolk see it enroute to the Dwarfheim." He claps his hand on Seadu's upper arm as they talk further. "You are truly worthy of rebirth, friend. I hope you can bless many chapels."

He follows along more stoically as Seadu gathers the others, then listens as the plans are sketched. "I do not wish to interfere with what you desire," he looks to Ulf and Orrin, "but if you ask, the building of edifices is a matter of pride for my clan. Perhaps to improve its visual allure, it could be 'bigger on the inside'? If the main entrance sloped subtly down to the basement but then opened into a communal hall which extended through the first floor... a suitable hall with 20' ceilings concealed within a modest building of the town?"

He nods his agreement to Ulf. "I agree, a hall built in men's town by men is never complete for dwarves." He looks to Seadu and Ulf. "I cannot go to perform the rescue in the mountain alone, but perhaps Ulf is escort enough to get you there to return the gemstone by Felles' command. I cannot offer coin to you, but I am willing to remain and oversee the laying of foundations this week, if you wish."

Alright, here's a first stab. Roofing is very, very expensive, which means that if we want a hall it'll have to have basic wood roofing for now, and no other rooms.

Here's a 50x20 trapezoid (to cut back on roofing and to give that optical effect of being bigger than it is), lit with torch sconces in the corners and windows along the upper portion of the wall. The building is set 10' into the ground (basement level, 20gp per wall unit), with ground level walls (10gp) on top to create a nice big effect. The entryway is an uncovered stone ramp, 5 feet wide, that winds downward at an 18º slope. The door is iron, but unlocked. The interior has stone flooring as well.

All of that costs 729 gold, leaving 121 gold for stocking furniture and (especially) paying the help. We can probably cut back on the help if PCs agree to pitch in on the work after returning from expeditions (alive, preferably).

If we didn't build underground, and didn't have a tall 20' ceiling, then we could probably add extra rooms or make the hall more elaborate.

The costs listed include labor--so don't worry about reserving money for the workers.

Note too that construction of a peaked roof is more expensive than flat roof for stone, whereas it's the opposite for wood.

Seadu draws a new set of blueprints. 'How's this? It's not quite as much as we'd like, but we'll have to start small. Both the main hall and the upper platform should be easy to expand later into whatever we like, and of course dwarves and dwarf-friends are free to deposit their own goods there for safe keeping, once we get a locked chest or two.'

  • Rampway to basement level: 2 units worth of walls (20gp), 2 stone floor units (at 5 gp) = 50gp
  • Hall: 10 'tall' walls (30gp), 8 ground floor walls (10gp), 20 stone floor units (5 gp) = 480gp
  • Roofing: flat timber, 2000 sq. feet (1sp) = 200 gp
  • Misc: locked iron door (50gp), 4 sconces (3gp), 4 windows (5gp), 2 tables (5gp), 4 benches (2gp) = 100gp
  • Fireplace: cost?
  • Total: 830 + unknown fireplace; we have 850gp to spend.

Rising on the morning of 21 May, the formalities of Court and the ArchDuke's summons now passed, Bromric seeks to pass his time in town until he can muster support for the rescue mission within the Finger. He returns to the Mason as they prepare to lay the Dwarvenheim foundations. As he offered to Ulf and Seadu, he assists the Mason with laying the foundations in dwarven fashion, working the first week with the crews to do so.

One Mason, five workers, plus Bromric is 7 people, 7 days, is 49 man-days of labor provided. 210 man-days - 49 man-days = 161 man-days remaining. That's 26.8 real days left for the crew of 6; Bromric's first week of help took 1.2 days off the total length.

7 nights stay in a private room of the inn, -7sp.

May 27, 1 VC - 10:10am

A small caravan unexpectedly appears in the pass from the southlands, roughly a dozen dwarves and as many heavily-laden mules. All but one of the dwarves are clad all in black, and at the head of their column an especially aged dwarf marches with a large banner shrouded with a black cloth. The dwarves, including a handful who must once have been renowned and doughty warriors among their kind and a number of commoners, plants itself in the middle of the square after their arrival, and the leader of the group declares in a powerful voice, resounding over the small town:
"I am Rostof Dunbridge of the Clan of the Wardiggers, Seneschal to the Chief of my Clan, Jenderal Wardigger. We true and honest dwarves of the Wardigger Clan seek the son of Jenderal, who was named by his sire in the sight of all dwarves as Bromric Wardigger. We bring tidings from the southlands."

The assembled dwarves, all save one, tie off the leads of their pack mules and sit themselves down silently in the dirt of the main square. The eleventh dwarf, very slight of build and with a somewhat less formal demeanor, combined with less dour dress, separates from the rest and heads off toward the tavern.

May 27, 1 VC - 10:30am

Word travels swiftly to where Bromric is working at the site of the future Dwarvenheim, having spent a week ensuring the foundations were laid in proper dwarven fashion. He smiles broadly at the news and proceeds directly to the square. He was clad in his black leathers rather than his resplendent armor while working, looking much the same as the arriving host. He crosses the square and welcomes the seneschal warmly, embracing him as his kin. "Welcome, Rostof Dunbridge in the name of my father, and all our forefathers before him." he recites back formally. "I am glad you have come! There is much to discuss, and opportunity in this land." He greets the other nine dwarves behind him, each in turn, and then indicates the inn. "Come! I have a room where we can discuss in private while the men have lunch in the tavern adjacent. I regret there is no suitable dwarven accommodation here just yet, but the foundations are laid - I've seen to it personally," he remarks, the stone-dust on his clothing a sign of pride for their kind.

He escorts the dwarves into the tavern, introduces them to Grisela, and pays 2gp for their ten good meals to settle them in for lunch. He then retreats with Rostof to his private room to discuss further.

Assuming they go along with that intent...

(2sp for a day's unpreserved rations, x10. -2gp from inventory.)
