FICTIONAL Game Background:
Okay; some of this is from the game itself and some of it is my own invention. While some of what is listed below really happened or is based on real events/people; all of it is for this fictional game and no offense is intended towards anyone. I tend to think of this game as occurring in a 'parallel dimension' which is ALMOST the exact same as ours with slight differences, such as having Soviet equipment being more advanced and capable than it is/was in our world.
Below is a timeline of events that lead up to the current situation:
1979: Soviets invade Afghanistan
1980: President Reagan is elected to office; his VP is George Bush (the FIRST George Bush)
1981: President Reagan is assassinated by insane gunman John Hinckley Jr. (THIS DID NOT OCCUR IN REAL LIFE; Reagan was wounded, but survived). George Bush becomes President. In this same year a more militant faction of high ranking Soviet military and political leaders comes to power in the USSR. The new Premier; Anton Galinsnikov immediately begins to concentrate efforts on Strategic Missile Defense ('Star Wars') technology
1982-1983: President Bush becomes very unpopular as some of his high taxes initiatives to fund the American quest for SDI missile defense technology leads to no breakthroughs and an economic recession.
1984-1986: Angry Americans elect opposition candidate Andrew Murphy (NOT A REAL PERSON) as the next President and after his term starts in 1985 he immediately cuts back on the spending for SDI and the economy soon recovers. In Europe, Asia and the Middle East; tensions rise as the Soviets began to more aggressively get involved in various situations. Murphy doesn't respond in any meaningful way, leading to discontent and despair among many in the U.S. military and Defense communities.
1987: The Soviets mass troops along the East/West European borders and in March they announced they have achieved a fully operational 'Star Wars' Defense system and they call on the Western powers of Europe and the United States to surrender to them. The West largely laughs at this saber-rattling and are therefore shocked when the Soviet military launches a handful of nukes that take out several major military sites in Western Europe; and then roll in their Armies. The U.S. decides to launch a limited nuclear counterattack as Europe is engulfed in a bitter war. A dozen nukes are launched at strategic sites in the USSR and ALL of them are defeated by the SDI shield the Soviets have put up. On April 1st, in what some thought at first was an 'April Fools Day' joke in poor taste, President Murphy surrenders to the U.S.S.R. With that chaos in Europe, some U.S. units continue fighting; some surrender; some disband and 'melt away'. In Asia; Japan, China and South Korea form a neutral alliance and declare their intention to sit this war out. Soon, NATO falls apart and many of its members are either overran by Soviet and Warsaw Pact units or they surrender in the face of looming defeat. Only England holds out and they suffer a vicious nuclear attack in response. Slowly, Soviet units prepare for the journey to the U.S. Most of the U.S. Navy decides to scuttle itself or flee to the high seas to engage in a hopeless struggle against the Soviets. At home; news causes widespread shock and chaos is soon the order of the day....
