It could be useful to have a Hobo character to send in as fodder ...

Doctor Pale: "The trail of slime leads to that door. Bob, why don't you go in first?"

Feel free to roll up as many characters as you want.

* background - Born into a wealthy, blue blood family, Hyacinth was able to pursue her passions of reading and research into history, anthropology, and the occult. This freedom, or indulgence, also allowed other less desirable traits to flourish as well. While her interests were of an academic nature ever since she was a child, as she grew older she was introduced to a more activist stance legacy of the family name. Coming of age she was taught that the Hudspeth family had a tradition of combating the realities of the occult, not just learning abstract ideas from books. Her family was dismayed to learn how little interest Hyacinth had in the noble work of the family legacy while Hyacinth was dismayed to learn that she would not be allowed to simply keep to her books even though she did see the importance of the work. She was sent out into the world for a spiritual walkabout, penniless, to think about whether she wanted to truly join the family in their endeavor.

* personality - Hyacinth Ausby Hudspeth is a bright, insatiably curious woman in her mid 30s who is both homely and bookish. She comes by her academic interests honestly from her burning desire to explore…comfortably, at a desk, in a library. She is fastidious and fussy, delicate (at least in her mind), and simply cannot stand getting dirty or wet. She treats much of the world outside of her research interests with exasperated resignation. Being thrust into a pauper’s soul-searching has been difficult on the old girl in so many ways, but she is genuinely trying to find a way to embrace her family’s wishes…because she does believe in the ideal and because it will help her to get back to the wealth, privilege, and comfort she misses dearly. She has a kitchen knife she took from home that she will pull on someone in a heartbeat if she feels she is being accosted- which happens fairly often now that she has been turned out into the real world.
