Reginald Wilkins, bookdealer and occultist
"I don't know," says Reginald, his voice tinged with sadness. "But if there is a chance that the crystal may open the gate here, then we should refrain from doing so. At least until I've had a chance to study this more," he says, indicating the Pnakotic Manuscripts. "The creature down there is dangerous, and until we know more, I don't think it is safe to open a gateway from its world to ours.

"Besides, there may be more than one of them down there."

Dr. Morgan:

Responding to Reginald, "Of course, Mr. Wilkins. That would be our best course of action. I would hate to inadvertently release something...unholy upon the world." He casts an uneasy smile at Father Vaughan and returns his attention to Reginald, "How long do you think your research would take?"

Reginald Wilkins, bookdealer and occultist
Reginald at first seems not to hear the question. His eyes focus ahead of him, on nothing in particular.

"How long....?" he asks quietly. He is almost whispering. "To dream it, would be the same as to be, to dream oneself.... If only time could dream...."

Reginald shakes his head, and looks back at Dr. Morgan. He clears his throat, and answers, "Some time, Dr. Morgan. Perhaps a few days...."

Reginald stares off into space again, a far-away look in his eyes.

Dr. Morgan:

Seeing Reginald's far away look, Frank becomes concerned about the esoteric book dealer, "Are you well, Reginald? I certainly do not wish you to tax yourself. I know, first hand, what this other-worldly knowledge can do to a man. It continues to exact its toll on me."

"That sounds smart," comments Agent Mulder about Reginald's decision not to attempt any spell with the trapezohedron stone.

Marius and Father Vaughan nod their head in agreement.

The men investigate the doors in the east and west walls of the basement. As the BOI agents had said, the west door (a thick steel door) opens into a very cold, well furnished 15'x15' bedroom with rugs, bed, drawer, table, sink, two chairs, landscape paintings, and a wardrobe with men's clothing. Nothing incriminating is found. There are four vents blowing out cold air; the temperature feels at or below freezing. There is a door in the north wall.

The east room has a similar thick steel door which opens into a cold, 20'x20' living room with a small attached 5'x8' kitchen. The living room has rugs, couch, two chairs, table and four chairs, book shelves with medical and religious texts, and landscape paintings on the walls. Nothing incriminating is found. The attached kitchen is very small but functional. There is a few days worth of food in the cabinet and ice box. Like the west room, there are vents blowing out frigid air. There is also a door in the north wall.

Dr. Morgan:

"Why in God's name would they keep it so cold down here?," Frank holds his hand up to one of the frigid vents, then looks apologetically at Father Vaughan after realizing what he has said. He then cautiously makes his way to the door on the north wall of the west room and places his ear against it to listen for any sounds.

Dr. Clarke:

"Well traditional the cellar was the place one would keep food fresh. The cooler temperatures is ideal for storage, but with the modern connivence of the ice box most have abandoned the dark musty cellar. Did you know that in 1881, President James Garfield cooled the air to combat Washington, D.C.'s oppressive summer swelter with an awkward device involving air blown through cotton sheets doused in ice water. It required enormous energy consumption and it's said he went through half a million pounds of ice in two months. I wonder how much ice Mr. Chertovski is using?"

Marius Albertoni, hunter

"I'd sure like to see how much his gas bill is," says Marius, drawing in his coat. "The man must have been one mad millionaire."

"Does anyone get the feeling this room should be larger?" he asks while in the 15'x15' west room. He knocks along the walls to see if any have space behind, asks Agent Mulder to help him peer through the vents with his flashlight, and tries the door in the north wall.

"Yes, mighty strange," says Agent Mulder as the men search the rooms for secret doors and find none. The vents cover duct-work the delivers the frigid air.

The north door in the west room opens into a hallway that goes north 10' then turns east for about 30', turning south for 10' and opening into the east room. Along the way in the east-west portion of the hallway are two doors.

Agent Mulder and the BOI men, weapons drawn, open the doors. The first is a room full of running machinery which must be generating the cold air.

The other room appears to be a medical operating room, with two metal operating tables with various medical tools and accoutrements on the side counters. There are jars with many internal body parts floating in liquid. There is a freezer door in the north wall.

This freezer door opens into a 10'x10' freezer chamber filled with four frozen human corpses. The cause of death isn't obvious.

Reginald looks at Dr. Morgan, almost with surprise. "I'm fine."

Reginald seems strangely unsurprised by the bodies. "Interesting," he says. "Perhaps Mr. Archer was on to something."

Two males and a woman, mid-thirties, and a teenage girl.

Upon closer inspection, one of the males' head is not attached!

The horror of the unattached head and dead bodies in the cold morgue shake many of the men.

"What the hell is gong om here?" says Agent Mulder.

Dr. Morgan:

Frank tries to regain his composure after seeing the corpses, "What kind of person could do such a sick thing? Surely these people had families and have been reported missing." Frank looks most disturbed and saddened by the body of the teenage girl.

One of the BOI agents covers up the gruesome bodies.

"Judging from this, Chertovski was into the cult. They looked like immigrants," Agent Mulder says to Dr. Morgan. "I'll have police reports of missing persons searched, though I know a lot of these immigrants don't deal much with the law."

The east-west hallway, off which the morgue lab and machinery room are located, connect the east and west residential rooms. The investigators find no secret doors or compartments as they fan out and search the place. Eventually they return to the original basement, the location of the previous gate through which Marius, Isaiah and Agent Smith passed through.

"Shall we continue the search through the house?" says Mulder.
