The Mercenary Company

#1 Post by Keehnelf »

A small cluster of semi-permanent military campaign tents has been set up a few hundred yards outside the walls of Vaul, organized around a large cook-fire. A simple rope-and-post perimeter has been set up to enclose a space roughly two hundred feet square, with a simple but well-built and brightly-painted sign installed on the southern side that reads: QUILLS QUARRY. Lying beside the sign in the mud is a massive, heavily-scarred and ornery-looking guard dog.

Late in the morning Odium Contemptus appears at the perimeter of the mercenary camp. He waits patiently for someone to address him, spending his time until then in a staring contest with the guard dog.

When he has the opportunity to speak, he asks, 'As you may have heard, Vaul is doomed to die a fiery death at the hands of the hobgoblins. Has the Archduke contracted your band in defence of the town, or are you free for hire? I have not yet decided whether I wish to be anywhere near these walls when everyone dies, but if not then I might as well set out on a small expedition until the battle dies down, and would need some hired hands.'

The mercenary camp seems to be empty. The dog whimpers a bit as Odium addresses it, and noses at an old, broken, desiccated bone lying near an empty and overturned bowl that might once have held water.

'Humph,' says Odium. It seems his plans to get out of dodge are not shaping up. He looks at the whimpering mongrel and addresses it. 'What? Shoo!' Then, with a huff, he turns and heads back to the town walls.
