Dangit. That's what I get for having two characters with three-letter names. And for some reason I made it an on-the-fly roll. Well, crumb. Let's see how Lug does.Scott308 wrote:Too bad Ulf isn't signed up.
Lug, high-wire, trick move (Dex: 14-2): [1d20] = 18
Lug turns around, closes his eyes, steps back...and falls right off he platform into the net.
D'oh.
Re: Harrowing Festival - 1 VC - Vaul
Lug goes in bold, and goes home quickly. The next time he falls from the wire, he will be disqualified from the competition.
The wizard in the fancy dress robes smirks at Lug and hitches up his hem, un-selfconsciously exposing his bony, pasty knees to scratch at one. Meanwhile, the Duke has arrived with his daughter, the Assessor and the captain of the guard as his escort once again, in a loose-fitting shirt and pants and a pair of suede slippers. He pulls the slippers off and yanks the shirt over his head, mussing his graying hair slightly and exposing his thin but wiry frame. He is in remarkably good condition, if slightly underfed-looking, for a man of his age, but his skin is also remarkably clear of hair and other markings apart from an odd puckered-looking scar just to the left of the middle of his chest.
He climbs the pole nimbly and steps up to the wire, waving with a good-natured smile out at the assembled townsfolk before he darts out and attempts a forward cartwheel across the wire. His fingers slip on the narrow wire as his weight bears down on them, and his entire body tumbles down, head-first, toward the net. He manages to catch himself on the wire and vaults back upward, but merely grins at the audience as he falls again, this time bottom-first, into the net.
Vaul highwire with trick (Dex 13 - 2) [1d20] = 17
The Wendall climbs like a large, ungainly spider up to the end of the wire and calls out to the assembled crowd, arms spread: "The Wendall will now prove that he is not only the most powerful wizard in the land, but also the most nimble and impressive showman!" He flings his arms out and waves them around as though casting a magical spell, while calling out his own name repeatedly, then takes one cautious step after another out across the wire, his face fixed with concentration and a thin stream of snot dangling from his nose as he wrenches up his mouth.
He slowly picks his way across the wire, and is nearly to the far side when his balance suddenly goes. He hangs slightly to one side, his mouth agape and mock-surprise etched across his face. Perhaps this is part of the trick? A split-second later, the suspicion is confirmed as he spins in place to grab the wire with both hands, swinging down under it and releasing in order to perform a backflip in mid-air and land on his feet once again. However, he misjudges his weight and when he vaults back into the air he is well past both the wire and the edge of the net with nothing in place to prevent him from simply flying out into the crowd where he lands with a scream of horror and a violent crash, sending several festival-goers sprawling in the dirt.
Wendall highwire trick (Dex 17 -2) [1d20] = 20
The captain of the guard rushes over to assist Wendall in his recovery and see if he requires medical attention, while the Duke fixes him with a cross look and simply shakes his head in seeming disgust.
It is now Valorei's turn at the wire!

Vaul: points 0, falls 1
Wendall: points 0, falls 1
Valorei: points 0, falls 0

Maybe Dorvar shouldn't have given his spot to Varas. Doesn't look like the competition is all that stiff so far.

"Thank you, my friend" smiles Varas. "I need to redeem myself after my awful archery performance."

Good luck. The competition doesn't seem to want to stay on the wire so far. Hopefully you fare better, says a smiling (for him anyway) Dorvar.

Orrin wanders over to watch some of the high wire acts, when he notices Dorvar.
"Ok, Bubs. Toss me. You earned it. Anyone else want a go, while I'm feeling charitable?"

Re: Harrowing Festival - 1 VC - Vaul
After making sure the dwarves are in a suitable area where they will not have to worry about hurting anyone or breaking anything, Dorvar wraps his arms around Orrin's chest from behind and starts spinning round. After several revolutions, he is spinning fast enough that Orrin's feet come off the ground. Taking a few more spins, he gets moving as fast as he can before releasing Orrin, letting him fly before hitting the ground and skidding to a stop. Dorvar stumbles and falls to the ground, having gotten dizzy from spinning. As he regains equilibrium, he will walk over to Orrin. That was for throwing a mug at my friend last night. Normally I would not take an interest in throwing a dwarf, but I made an exception for this. Dorvar extends his hand to help Orrin up. Now that that is over, I have no hard feelings. I don't know what that was about and I don't care. Wendall stood up for me when a group of goblins wanted to make me their slave, so I will defend him as best I can from any threat. I hope whatever the problem is will not be something that prevents us from being friends.

Re: Harrowing Festival - 1 VC - Vaul
Orrin gets up slowly, spitting out dirt and leaves. "Ugh, I needed that. You know Dorvar, I don't have a beef with that Wendall kid. I thought I would at first when I saw him, but one look in his eyes even as drunk as I was I could tell he didn't intend to kill Lars. He's an idiot clearly, but not evil. I know I treated him a bit roughly but you know how it is. Once a dwarf gets his blood up, it's hard to stand down."
He holds out his hand to Dorvar, a lopsided grin on his face. "Thanks for not here holding a grudge. I'd hate to get in any unnecessary fights with you. Youre a bear in the ring."

Now, we should go get some of Ghrym's special brew and watch people fall off the wire, says Dorvar, a grin splitting his face.

Valorei, up late the night before writing, appears to be sleeping under the netting.
The judges give him credit for a "fall" for this pass and move on to the next contestant, Abi Sadira.

Abi seems to have gone missing about when the event started, and is counted for a fall on her first run through. Varas might end up in the lead by default, and the crowd applauds politely as he approaches the wire.

Varas ascends to the rope. His pride won't allow him just to walk across. He makes it halfway, stops, then makes a cartwheel along the rope. His tall frame makes it's four points of contact flawlessly. He reaches the other end and bows with a flourish on the platform.
Varas crossing with rope trick [1d20-2] = 7-2 = 5
just realized it should have been a +2 instead of -2, but the result would be the same

Dorvar stands, applauding Varas' crossing. About time someone made it across that damn wire. Way to go, Varas!

The crowd applauds enthusiastically alongside Dorvar. Everyone sits at zero points and one one fall apart from Varas, with his two points and no falls, as Lug re-takes his position on the wire.
Re: Harrowing Festival - 1 VC - Vaul
Lug steps up to the wire for his second go. "I hope they removed the grease from this highwire!" he jokes.
Lug turns around and starts singing. "Doot do doo do DOOT do doo do...Oh Billy Jean is not my love-ah..." Sliding one foot back onto the line, then the other, he moonwalks his way backwards across the tightrope.

Re: Harrowing Festival - 1 VC - Vaul
The Duke steps up onto the wire once again, a wry grin on his face and boldness in his step. He leaps forward along the line, and his momentum leads him into a tall vertical flip which he executes with enormous grace, but fails to land along the wire and crashes headlong into the netting once again. He rises from a tangled mess with an awkward wave of his arm to the laughter of the assembled crowd, smooths his short salt-and-pepper hair and returns to the company of the Assessor, his daughter and the captain of the guard, where he shrugs himself back into his shirt and finds a spot to watch the remaining contestants.
Vaul highwire with 2 tricks (Dex 13 - 4) [1d20] = 13
The Wendall climbs the pole and stands atop it, waving about the area to imagined applause and inspiring several short bursts of clapping from eager and encouraging onlookers. Then, turning his back to the wire while atop the pole, he executes a daring backflip in his brightly-colored robes. He sticks the landing and throws his hands up into the air furiously, while wobbling madly back and forth on the middle of the wire. Slowly and methodically he backs across the wire, set on performing the same trick as a dismount. He makes it within striking distance of the far pole, braces himself, and flips backward once more, narrowly missing the pole with his feet and instead smashing one of his knobby kneecaps against the wood as he scrambles to catch the wire before falling completely down into the netting. He rises out of the net with a shamefaced look, but erect and haughty posture nonetheless as he wipes his nose once more.

Valorei gets up to the wire, waving down at Varas with a wide grin. Valorei begins to step onto the wire carefully, not wanting a repeat of his last attempt.
Tightrope Walk, one trick, DEX13-2: [1d20] = 13
Valorei begins to walk out, his steps gaining more confidence the further out he goes. The elf then attempts to use one foot to spin about and finish the other half backwards. He gets the spin down without any problems but as soon as he takes that first backwards step a wind breeze hits the rope just enough over and his foots goes down, followed by a very surprised Val.
Landing in the net Val begins laughing, "Should have known better hahahaha"
