Merthyr

thinks Gwennethel's suggestion sounds like music to his half-elven ears, and follows along the same wall. Maybe there will be more doors to senselessly bash !

Spotting concealed door without actively searching 1 in 6: [1d6] = 5

Finding secret door when actively searching 2 in 6: [1d6] = 4

but, alas, once again, he is unfocussed

"Careful, Gwenn" Adel warns. "You have a good point about humanoids not roaming behind these doors, but I wouldn't be surprised to find more of those spiders...or something worse crawling about."

He then illuminates the room behind the locked door with his bullseye lantern.

Gwennethel searches for secret doors, but finds none, beginning from the left side of the room.

Merthyr, too, looks around for any secret doors or concealed portals, but finds nothing worth noting.

The party brings in their light sources and they notice four palm-sized niches in the northern wall, evenly spaced. Each niche contains a very big, palm-sized gemstone. From left to right, they are as follows: Topaz, Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire. Llewellyn, Adel, and Freddie can see that these are worth less than they should be, probably due to some inner flaws in the stones themselves, but the topaz is worth 70gp, the ruby, 50gp, the emerald, 90gp, and the sapphire 90gp. As huge as these gemstones are, they should be worth hundreds, if not thousands of gold pieces. Still, they will fetch a price if sold and each look beautiful in their own right. They also note that there seems to be something strange inside of each stone, something that indicates it was put there by someone for some unknown purpose, probably why their worth has been reduced, but giving the stones a completely different quality, or perhaps a different use.

Fanxyl, not even of a thief sort, notices that the gemstones are each trapped, noting that prying them loose would trigger some trap or another.

Biblo, libriomancer

"Well, we can leave this be and explore other avenues," says Biblo. "Or, being that this seems like a challenge some may find to hard to resist, we can try to safely set off the trap. Perhaps set a grappling hook to each stone, tied with one rope each, and pull them all at the same time from safely beyond the door?"

"Or we set our kobold prisoner to play with the gems and see what happens."

"This looks like a puzzle that requires more research," suggests Llewellyn. "For example, perhaps pressing the gems in a certain order does something?"

He inspects each gem without touching it to see if he can identify what's inside each stone.

Llewellyn notices that there seems to be a very strange and alien crystalline like growth inside of each gem. Each growth seems to stem backward from the surface of the gem to the deepest end, as though possibly connecting the gem to something inside of the wall.

Freddie pulls out his probes and sets about removing the trap.
[1d100] = 4
His attempt is successful and he announces that the trap was connected to all four gems, saying that each niche in the wall would have set off a fire trap that would have burned anyone trying to pry the stones loose.

The stones can now be pried out without danger.

All characters with thief abilities must roll a dexterity check on 1d20 to pry out the stones. You want to roll your dexterity score or lower to be successful without chipping or cracking the stones. Other character classes can try with a -2 penalty.

Freddie uses his probes to begin working on the topaz.
Ability Check: Dex = 18 - [1d20] = 18

Freddie pops the hand-sized topaz out of the wall with some small amount of trouble, but it comes out unblemished.

Llewellyn goes to work on removing the sapphire.

Dex check (18): [1d20] = 2

"What do you think Jenn would like you to give her on her engagement ring?" he asks Freddie with a smirk. "Sapphire, ruby, or emerald?"

"These gems are of deplorable quality" laments Adel, shaking his head. "but, perhaps they serve another purpose."

He tries to pry some stones loose, not really caring whether they get chipped or not.

Gwennethel, Elf Druid

Gwennethel, knowing she has lousy dexterity just watches as the others pry the stones loose. She thinks to herself how she would love to try on that ruby but decides she better not chance chipping it.

Adel pulls out the ruby with a bit of trouble, but doesn't chip the gem. Freddie is left to get the last of the stones, already having bagged the topaz. He goes for the emerald.
[1d20] = 2
He has an easier time slipping the emerald from its niche and wraps the stone separately so as not to allow the two to bang together in his sack.

Once all of the stones are removed, Trendt notices something strange about the stonework . He has already deduced that this was some sort of elaborate trap made up by a clever wizard, but the extent of the trap seems to continue further than he can detect. From what the dwarf can see, there is a networking of tube-like stonework that leads in two directions, one going down toward the floor on the other side of the stone wall, and another going deeper into the north. He can only speculate, but thinks that whatever this was is connected to some other rooms where these large gems may come in handy. The crystalline structures inside of the gems alludes to this fact.

Osh and Kosh offer to lead the party to the empty rooms to the north where they know the wizard used to stay before the goblins took over. They also offer to lead the party to the goblins if that is what they really wish.

Fanxyl-Ranger Yes lets go see to them goblins. Do ya think they will be more hospitable than the Kobolds? If not we should at least try to keep the leader breathing. He may have more info on this place.

As he continues scan the west side room for any secret doors.
