Introduction
Over the course of the past several months, trading caravans traveling between the Duchy of Ulek, the County of Ulek, the Principality of Ulek, and the kingdom of Celene have vanished while criss-crossing through the mountain passes of the Lortmil range. There has been rampant speculation - anywhere from the usual suspects of humanoids that inhabit the high waste places in the mountains, to merchants staging false disappearances to pocket their insurance claims, to even some members of the realms blaming each other as part of a conspiracy. But wiser, and cooler heads at high levels of government of each of the respective lands suspect it may be something far more sinister. The caravans are always well-protected with skilled and experienced guards - more than enough to repel attacks from goblins, orcs or gnolls. Interrogation (magical and otherwise) of the trading companies has revealed no foul play on their part. And the leaders of these countries are usually privy to each other's counsels - barring a major shift in strategy by the Uleks or Celene. So what is causing the disappearances of trading parties?
The people neighboring the regions affected - at the foothills of the Lortmils, are growing nervous, and they want answers! While ruling by divine right, the counts, viscounts, princes, kings and queens also realize their rule is only one frenzied mob away from bloody revolution, and it is their solemn duty to protect their subjects. And so Her Fey Majesty, Queen Yolande, Perfect Flower of Celene, Lady Rhalta of All Elvenkind, as well as His Serene Highness, Prince Olinstaad Corond of Ulek, Lord of the Peaks of Haven, the dwarven monarch, have sent a summons far and wide, seeking bold adventurers to venture deep into the passes of the Lortmils, find the cause of the mysterious disappearances, and if appropriate, deal retribution to any miscreants behind these nefarious activities!
