Thank you!
Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
Hey there Keehnelf.
I don't have a copy of the rules (yet); and my work place has issues with allowing me to go to the Dice Roller page on this site (though not the forum part of the site....I have no idea why); so I went to a site called Random.org and rolled up six sets of stats. I got 4 sevens....yep....4 smack dab in the middle stats....; I don't know if the scores for stats have to be in order; or if the player can chooose where to put them; but I'm definitely cool with playing them in order; here they are:
STR: 7
DEX: 11
END: 7
INT: 7
EDU: 5
SS: 7
By the way; what does SS stand for?
Thanks and looking forward to the game!

Hey Max:
I'll send you a PM after I eat some lunch and we can get some character creation started--no rulebook necessary, I'll just lead you via Q&A!
thanks for your interest and very much looking forward to the game myself.

Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
I think that this is as good a place to post this as any, so here goes ...
Some of the posters here have some experience playing Traveller and some always wanted to play, but never got around to it until now. As someone who has played a lot of Traveller over the years, I wanted to share a tip on having fun with Traveller.
Traveller is known for having "games within a game", and chargen is one of those areas rich in fun for anyone who cares to engage in the game within the game. So I thought that I would make a more public than normal presentation of the creation of my character for the new Traveller game ... Vinnie the Suit.
A great deal of fun can be had by starting with the basic chargen results and reading between the lines to create a story of who the character is and how he got there. Let me illustrate using Vinnie:
Starting with an intention to begin in the Career of Other and Initial Attributes of
Strength = 7
Dexterity = 8
Endurance = 3
Intelligence = 9
Education = 11
Social = 10
At age 18, Vinnie is of average Strength and Dexterity but very low endurance, and above average intelligence and social standing with a near perfect education. So let's speculate a little and flesh out his birth and childhood background story.
Vincent was born into a criminal family. No matter how wealthy or powerful either the family or one of its members becomes, the taint of the family name creates a Social glass ceiling above which they can never rise. No member of the family has ever risen to the rank of nobility (Soc 11+) or, so it seems, ever will.
Vinnie was a bright but sickly child who received all of the advantages of his family wealth and was extensively home schooled, earning a college degree by age 18. He is unsympathetic towards persons of noble rank and contemptuous of individuals he feels are unworthy of their titles.
Term 1 (age 18-21) Rolls:
Enlist in Other (10)
Pass Survival roll (5)
Pass Re-enlistment roll (8)
Add 2 skills: Computers (4 Adv. Edu.-College), Gambling (2 Service)
10,000 credits [the muster out benefits were rolled at the end and back assigned to terms for color.]
On turning 18, Vinnie is sent off to a University for a more formal education, but the call of easy money is too strong and he uses his new college skills to beat a local casino, leading to some close calls, proficiency in Gambling and Computer and 10,000 credits in profits.
[End of Term 1] Vinnie 7839BA (age 22) Other-1 term
Computer-1, Gambling-1
10,000 credits
Term 2 (age 22-25) Rolls:
Pass Survival roll (10)
Pass Re-enlistment roll (9)
Add 1 skill: Streetwise (5 Adv.Edu.-College)
+1 Edu (muster)
The family welcomes 22 year old Vinnie into the family business. This time he takes College seriously and graduates with a degree in pre-law (Streetwise-1, +1 Edu).
[End of Term 2] Vinnie 7839CA (age 26) Other-2 terms
Computer-1, Gambling-1, Streetwise-1
10,000 credits
Term 3 (age 26-29) Rolls:
Pass Survival roll (5)
Pass Re-enlistment roll (8)
Add 1 skill: Bribery (4 Service)
Gun (muster)
At the age of 26, Vinnie begins using his skills to run small criminal operations. After a few close calls, he begins carrying a gun but finds that some well placed cash (Bribery-1) will solve most problems without the need to resort to violence.
[End of Term 3] Vinnie 7839CA (age 30) Other-3 terms
Bribery-1, Computer-1, Gambling-1, Streetwise-1
10,000 credits
Body Pistol with silencer
Term 4 (age 30-33) Rolls:
Pass Survival roll (4)
Pass Re-enlistment roll (6)
Add 1 skill: Forgery (6 Adv.Edu.-Trade)
+1 Int (muster)
Moving up in the family business leaves 30 year old Vinnie swimming with bigger fish, but a careless moment results in an arrest. His family connections keep him safe during his two year visit to 'criminal college' (prison), and the time is not wasted as Vinnie learns Forgery from his cell mate. On his release, Vinnie picks up where he left off and whole experience teaches him to think before he acts (+1 Int).
So let's take a break and recap the story of Vinnie to this point ...
Bribery-1, Computer-1, Forgery-1, Gambling-1, Streetwise-1
10,000 credits
Body Pistol with silencer
To be continued ...

Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
I was just noticing that we have an extremely well-educated crew. A 12 and several 11's. We'll be like a salon in space, all discussing Derrida over crumpets between laser volleys.
Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
I guess that makes me the mandatory village/space ship idiot.....I've only got an Education of 5!
Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
We're ALMOST done with everyone's basic character creation. If your character doesn't have a name yet, please provide him/her with one, and if you haven't selected a hook yet please do so. I'll check it tonight and see if we're ready for the second round of Hook selection.
Basically Hook selection will end when not everyone wants to take another hook. Everyone has to select N hooks for us to begin round N+1.
I expect that tomorrow or the day after I'll have the initial stage-setting post that begins our tale in earnest.

Re: Out-Of-Character Chat
We need a quick clarification ...
Is the next stop of the ship Asgard or Trieste?
Are we generally heading toward Asgard in a few more stops?
... I ask because all of the conversation so far is about Asgard, but this
[EDIT: OK, I made a quick nodal diagram from the world descriptions and the route would seem to be ... Marenau to Trieste to Ipscomb to Zorod to Flens to Asgard XI to Verge to Solitude to Ancrs ... with an option for side trips (Trieste to Chau Eta to Ipscomb) or (Ipscomb to Sokol to Marenau). So we are at least 10 weeks from Asgard and may want to adjust the conversation towards Trieste.]

You're at 38 planetary diameters from Marenau and gaining, with about 3 hours to go until you reach safe jump distance. The first jump will land you in Trieste in just over seven days.

Asgard is at the far edge of the region from where you are, and your estimate is pretty solid on overall distance and route. I have a map I plan to post today.
As a stock class a trader, this ship will take a while to get to Asgard but the stops along the way will be mainly for refueling.
