The World: places, people, maps, etc.

#1 Post by mb. »

One of the principles of Dungeon World s "draw maps, leave blanks", so here is an appropriately vague map of the main places of interest we've talked about so far. I'll update this as further landmarks come up in play.

Places of Note

Urbem, Capital of the Empire
Urbem is a large, crowded, and in parts thriving metropolis. The city is a study in contrasts: Vicus Solis, or The Quarter of the Sun, is an elevated and walled area, almost a city unto itself, where the nobility lives, relatively oblivious to the rest of the city and world. Basetown, in the shadow of what the commoners call Shinetown, is dark and generally filthy. The Basetown constabulary is corrupt, leaving the nights dangerous enough to require a curfew, which does little to control the gangs and tickermen that plague the streets. Vetus, home to the Scholae Universitas, is the oldest quarter of the city. It is a place of faded gardens and dusty streets, largely ignored by much of Urbem.

Doctor Oelle, Boggs and Dunwick are from Urbem, and Bedwyr has spent enough time there recently that the above may be considered common knowledge.

The Brazen Dragon (Urbem)
Basetown tavern of exceedingly ill repute which serves surprisingly good mead.

The Jolly Owlbear
A clean and spacious wayhouse about a day's walk beyond the walls of Urbem, just outside of the border of the city's restrictive laws and taxes. Thanks to the owner Burt the atmosphere is usually jovial, thanks to his wife Betts the food and drink are consistently good, and thanks to their enormous half-orc bouncer Pid the place is usually peaceful and safe. Numerous small buildings have sprung up around the rambling wayhouse, forming a village of sorts, but one far more interesting than most due to the regular trade and traffic from far and wide.

The Wood
Known as "Lignum Profundus" in Urbem and simply "The Wood" in the settlements nearby, this ancient forest is enormous, dangerous, and mostly uncharted. Stories of someone entering never to be heard from again are common in human settlements. At least one tribe of elves live deep in the forest in a village known as Whitetree, but little is known about them and contact with the outside world is rare. What else is "known" – Owlbears, walking trees, Gnoll tribes and Centaurs – is hearsay and legend.

Bedwyr would know more than the rest of you about The Wood, though Doctor Oelle could surely teach him a thing or two about the flora and fauna.

Fortress of the Fae
Legendary castle where Erasmus Fletch prevailed against the Chaosling army.

Temple of Truth
A remote and mysterious monastery, said to house The Edge of Light, Erasmus Fletch's holy sword.

Jotunland
Snowy, mountainous region in the far north, home to a rather frightening culture of red headed barbarians, furred ice serpents and, of course, trolls.

I'll edit this and add places as appropriate.
