Herebury Locations

Woodcroft House
The Castle, ancestral home to the Woodcroft line.

Town Square

Eighter’s House
A large house and occasional inn, belonging to colorful grizzled veteran, Eighter. The walls are decorated with weapons and armor, and there is what is claimed to be a stuffed goblin head above the fireplace. Eighter opens when he's got fresh ale and feels like company. Eighter has never seemed so concerned with exact prices, and has never set up his house like a proper tavern. Customers feel more like guests in his living room, and are often told to simply "help yourself, coin in the helm!"

Ravengard's Library
A small outbuilding on the Castle Grounds, filled with the collected tomes, scrolls, and relics of Ravengard, an aged scribe. Many of the Village’s children spent some time here, learning lessons, or just listening to stories.

Herebury Market
Held in the Town Square, overflowing into the Village Green, every Fruday. The only time to inhabitants of the Castle and village mingle openly.

The Mill
Home and workplace of the Miller’s beautiful daughters. Update: The Miller is dead, and his wife, Bris, is now town Reeve. The daughters have taken over running the Mill themselves, and the eldest daughter has announced her engagement. The wedding is expected to be the social event of the Spring.

The Red Herring
A small tavern patronized primarily by fishermen.

Herebury’s Hearth
A run-down and little-used inn at the Eastern end of town. The Inn’s sign is cut in the shape of a donkey with a red rooster painted on it.

The Hedge Hovel
Just south of town across The Ditch and The Beck is a patch of wildly overgrown hedges surrounding a grubby cottage. Home to the local medicine woman, Hag Sal. Update: Currently abandoned and growing over with brambles after the ignominious death of Hag Sal.

Tatter Helga’s House
Home of the local witch. The pens behind the house contain goats, pigs, and strange camelid animals no one else has ever seen before, which she calls “Yammers.”

The Forge of Hake Glenross
The Village’s source of tools, household objects, and the occasional weapon.

The Temple of the Old Gods
Overgrown, abandoned for at least 40 years, located in the woods just out of town. Primarily dedicated to Dianae, Janus, and Volos. Underneath are ancient catacombs, including the resting place of Lady Gwyngyll, a legendary figure from the days when this region was a trading power.

Wicht Hill
Wicht Hill was formed a couple generations ago where the village piled up the bodies of attacking kobolds. A stunted oak tree grows from out of it. It is ignored by general consensus.

The Forgotten Well
A spring sacred Sereidonna, protector goddess of the Serene. The spring and the goddess are both largely forgotten.

Guardians Grove
A grove deep in the woods, filled with bushes that produce very sweet berries. These berries are, oddly enough, excellent bait for fish. An massive oak stands alone in the center of the grove, surrounded by three ancient standing stones. Many townsfolk avoid the Grove because it is believed to be home to an easily-offended spirit. Update: after the terrible events of Incised Cultists, the Grove is considered a place of evil repute by the locals, even if the adventuring party knows better.

Shriek’s Den
A notorious cave deep in the swamps to the south of Herebury. Purported to be haunted.

Smokey’s Cabin
In a pine forest flanked by a ridge of rocky cliffs to the west and the Serene River to the East. Update: Abandoned and infested with owls.

The Lumber Camp
A collection of shacks and tents amidst a field of tree stumps, and a major source of employment in Herebury. Many of the unmarried workers choose to live on the site, in order to gain a few hours work over their peers who travel to and from Herebury.

New Smithwald
The next village over, several miles south on River Road, past the swamps. Recently rebuilt after a fire destroyed most of Old Smithwald.

Law and Order in Herebury

Herebury is too small for a standing guard.

There is a Reeve, appointed by the Castle. His Her main job is keeping records of harvests and so on, but (s)he also has control of a fund that can be used to raise deputations when necessary, or offer rewards. There a few community leaders that (s)he regularly turns to to organize deputations. The Miller is probably one of them. So is Eighter.

Update: Bris Miller has been appointed Reeve, and has become the de facto mayor of Herebury. She is much more involved in the day-to-day operations of the village, and has big plans. So far the implemented changes have all been indisputably for the good, but even good changes can rankle people used to doing things a certain way for generations.

There is a Knight in residence at the Castle, but he is an old man, and it is doubtful that he ever saw combat. Still he can carry some authority when the occasion calls for it.

The Lumber Camp, being by necessity an organized communal effort, probably has the most formally organized system of security and dispute resolution.

Otherwise, the people of Herebury solve their day-to-day problems themselves.

North of Herebury are the Thousand Acre Woods. Then there are some foothills leading up to Sealdun, the Old Salt Mountain, where there is still some minor mining. Enough so that the cobblestone roads are actively maintained. After that the way becomes more of an established track than a road. The next town up is Oxley, a town very much like Herebury—about the same size, about the same economy, a little more religious than lax Herebury.

A little more than halfway between Herebury and Oxley is a way point, a well-situated spot that generations of travelers have chosen to camp in. There is decent coverage from the elements, a constructed fire pit, good sight lines up and down the road, and fair odds of meeting other travelers bedding down in the same place.
