Maybe it's not a couch.
"Seeing as we'll be wanting all new furniture anyway, maybe now would be a good time to start getting rid of the old stuff."
So saying, Darius gives the sofa a nudge with the butt end of his spear.

Nothing happens when you push the chesterfield. Some dust is raised but nothing else. Does Pilydor want to do anything in this room? Investigate the chesterfield for magic, etc.?

On the right side of this room, near where you came in, is a hallway that goes twenty feet and ends in a door. There is a door on the north part of the second ten foot section as well. Another hallway goes left for fifty feet. There are two doors on the north wall and two doors on the south wall. On the southern wall is an arched entrance with an old curtain hanging in it.

"so, which way youse want ta go?" The dwarf asks, although it's more of a hint.

if no reply comes quickly, he'll go to the arched/curtained entranceway...expecting it to be a window or something.

Baltir uses his sheild hand to open the curtain while his axe is poised to strike if a bad thing is there.

The curtain opens with a puff of dust, revealing an unusual scene beyond. A large dining room table is set with candles and six place settings. In the middle of the table are roast birds, roast meat, bowls of boiled vegetables, sauces, glass bottles of a brandy coloured liquid, and many pies and pastries. In the corner is a tripod holding a braazier of glowing coals that heat the room.
The room is thirty by twenty. The curtained entrance is in the centre of the north wall which is thirty feet long. On the south wall are two boarded-up windows. The room is lit by the candles. There are no other doors or entrances in the room that you can see.

"Isn't this nice?" Darius looks on the scene with suspicion.
"If this were a story, we'd have several possible explanations for what we see before us:
"A - The food and drink is not real, and is just an illusion of some sort.
"B - The food and drink are real, and have been put here to tempt us into some sort of trap.
"C - The food and drink are real, and we are about to meet our host, who has something to tell us. And the table is set for six, so me, Pil, Kenelm, Baltir...and two places for our hosts."
Darius walks boldly into the dining room and calls out: "So, without further ado, I give you our hosts!" He looks about the room and then says, in a more conversational tone: "That's your cue. Time to make your entrance."

How far have the candles burned down? Has much wax accumulated at their bases, or do they appear to have been lit very recently?

Baltir walks warily into the room, keeping an eye on the scene (ceiling, floor, sides, etc) as he walks up to the table. With his shield hand, he reaches out to touch one of the (what appear to be) cooked birds on the table.

The candles are burned down just a little. Perhaps half an hour?
The cooked bird appears to be real.

Kenelm picks up a carving knife on the table and says, "Should we eat? This looks really good. Anyone have a spell to detect magic or a charm?"
Kenelm looks around the room and says loudly, "Anybody home? Is it time to eat?"

Baltir rolls his eyes.

"Stop bein' so flamin' overly dramatic, will ya? If'n he wanted to be known, 'e don't need yer introductions!"

The dwarf reaches over and takes a leg from the cooked bird and bites into it.

The chicken is very delicious. Kenelm, seeing nothing happens to you, picks up a fork and knife and fills his plate. He pours on gravy and also eats. "Mmm, this is really god," he exclaims.

Baltir takes the leg and finishes it up, dumping the bone on the floor.

"Well...let's git outta here, then, and find the one who made the stuff..."

He looks around.

"Maybe a kitchen or sumptin?"

"Stop being so dramatic..." Darius mutters, "It's only my job. Do I go where you work and knock the shovel out of your hands?"
"You may have just ruined someone else's dinner party. You know that, right?"
