The Adventure begins

#1 Post by Distorted Humor »

The four of you are seated at the table, digesting a fine meal served by your host and potential employer, The food is rich, as is the merchant as he eats and makes small talk. Then he calls the plates away, and the curvy serving girls take your plates and fill your drinks, and leave the room.

"Hello, my name is Zentile Adda, I am a trader in spices and rugs, like the ones hanging from the walls. I hope you enjoyed your meal, however I did not bring you here to discuss the price of ginseng across the narrow sea, you may be surprised, but I come from humble origins, a small fishing village that left as soon as I could on a merchant ship, and did well for myself. I still have family back at home, some do not talk to me, but I have a dear niece, her name is Holly Adda. I was always fond of her, I was even thinking of perhaps bringing her back here to the city and train her to be my heir. However I have found out she is missing."

Zentile takes a long sip from his wine, swishing it around his cup, then putting it down with a sigh. "I know you are adventure seekers, people of unique skills and talents. The Town is Rendhold, on a Isle of the same name. It is not much to look at, fisherman and sheep-farmers mostly. I am willing to pay your way to the island, and grant you 1,000 GP each in cash if you can bring her back to me safely. If something has happened to her, just bring me back a lock of her hair or something else of her so my wizard can confirm she is dead, and I will pay you 500 GP each. If you do not want to take it, I understand, and the meal is for your time. However I do not have much contact with the island anymore, here is a copy of a letter of hers, and locket painting that shows what she looks like." as he places them on the table.

The locket shows a young girl, blond and green eyed who is around the age of 12. The letter is to her uncle discussing his offer to bring her off the island to give her a education in the city.

"I do hope you take this offer, I think that you will be uniquely qualified to find Holly. "

Patrus listens attentively to everything the merchant says, then responds A dignified task master Adda, and your terms sound reasonable to me. Do you have any additional insight into the circumstances of her disappearance? Who did she reside with, are there any specific people we do well by contacting once we reach the island?

I do not know the nature or circumstances of her disappearance, except that I cannot contact her, which is damn odd. She resided with her mother, Lysa. It was my younger brother wife, he drowned a few years ago so she a widow. Of course, its not uncivilized, should be a Lord Kersham who will have is keep a mile or so north of the town who may know what is going on...

Gregor, the mage - The Adventure begins

"My apprenticeship is at an end and I have leave to pursue my own travels." Gregor replies and drinks the last of the wine from his glass. "Your terms are quite suitable to myself and I will gladly assist in locating your niece."
DM: "Black Dougal gasps 'Poison!' and falls to the floor. He looks dead."
Fredrik: "I'm grabbing his pack to carry treasure in."

"I'm glad to join such a worthy cause as well. Your interest in your family's welfare is commendable sir," Othmar says through his heavy mustache as he looks at the locket and reads the letter. "How long ago was this painted?"

Less then a year ago, though I am told she has reached that moment where the girls are taller then the boys for a year or two since this was painted. I am gladdened by your Willingness to help me. I am sure if she is returned to me unharmed I will make sure each of you is rewarded with a bonus on top of the cash offered, even if the bonus might have to be paid in trade goods. The trade vessel "Sharpe's Point" leaves in the morning, and its master owes me a deep favor, so I am sure I can arrange you safe travel to the Island.

Then I believe all is settled. Are we required do anything in preparation for the morning or should we simply meet at the docks? asks the cleric.

Fair enough, we should start as soon as possible. Othmar finishes his wine and stands.

You board the "Sharpe's Point", a 12 Oar trader with a triangle sail, and barring a storm that churned two nights out, the four day passage in uneventful.

As you pull up to the dock, you see that it seems that Rendhold is a well ordered town. On the left is a series of shops, to the right is a large warehouse and a blacksmith shop, and further out you see a large Inn and a town square with stone buildings. Also past the blacksmth is a large circular hold-fast of rough, unmortared stone. You unload and the master of the Sharpe's Point wishes you well, and says that he will be back in seven day's time to pick you up. As he gets ready to leave, a older man, in his 50's, with dark haired salted with grey and deep green eyes comes to speak with the party.

"Welcome to Rendhold, my name is Tavorus Judd and I am the Dock-master, I need to know your name and a reason for your visit to the town. The reason does not need to be fancy, just need something to put in the records. He smiles at the group "I see we have a diverse group, good to see, seems that all we get these days is merchants from Zarn buying fish, we are famous for our catches of Ironfish. The Drowned Man Is the Inn, we have only one inn, but its large enough to sleep 80 people. Your names and reason please...."

My name is Patrus, master Judd, and we are on business on behalf of Zentile Adda. That should be sufficient for your records, I suppose?
Given that we have no reliable information about what actually happened, not even if the disappearance is of general knowledge, I would not openly discuss the nature of our mission. If you guys agree with it we could, if asked by the local family members, simply say that we have a message for Holly Adda that must be delivered to her in person.
Could you direct us as to where we can find the lady Lysa Adda?

Zentile Adda eh? The leaver still has interests in the home he left it appears. As for Lysa, she a baker down on the main street, and a good woman. It is the store closest to the Drowned Man. Well I am going to add you to the Log of arrivals, as long as you don't cause trouble, trouble will not follow you.

He escorts you up the docks and points to the building.

So, what's our approach? Othmar addresses the rest of the party once they are away from the dockmaster. People may get upset if we march into the bakery like an army. Might be better to send one person.

"A prudent course of action, Othmar!" Gregor responds "What say you meet us next door at the Drowned Man when you are done speaking to the lady? It appears that establishment is a tavern."

Well and good, the mustached mercenary agrees with a slightly lowered eyebrow; he assumes that Patrus is too concerned with his sanctity to flirt with an employed widow, but he is a bit surprised at the other two. I don't imagine I'll be long. Keep an eye out - news travels fast in a small town and the biggest news around here is us.

So saying, Othmar departs with a wave and makes his casual way to the bakery.

Patrus agrees to the suggested course of action If the lady is at work it might be awkward to make too many questions. Perhaps asking her for a private meeting at her convenience would be advisable. Anyway, let us leave it at your discretion Othmar, we will be waiting..
