18. Leaving the Lair

#1 Post by dmw71 »

The group, successful in surviving their brief venture into the troglodyte lair, regroups just outside the entrance with all members conscious except for the youngster, Darrin.

You're in a marsh.

---
Before we dive off, I just wanted to get a quick snapshot of the current health of the group. Anyone note any discrepancies with the following:

Code: Select all

Character % Health Curr HP Spells
Fimmion 100% 7 2
Strom 84% 27 -
Shannigans 50% 4 cantrips
Grimnail 45% 9 -
O'rek 29% 5 1
Kaltar 29% 7 1
Gwillt 28% 8 -
Epsilon 23% 5 0
Ewell 14% 5 -
Go ahead and begin discussing your plans and re-establish a marching order, indicating how Darrin will be transported. O'Hare, which Gwillt is the most familiar with the return route, is several hours away. This was the basic overview map of your travels (from this post).

You left O'Hare heading south.

After travelling for several hours, the tracks bent east/southeast.

       | | Note: A few from the first attack actually fled south.

                     #2

                  ========
                  tracking
                  ========
                     |
                     V

                        south, then bent to east

                               [lair]

When Gwillt performed his initial inspection of the lair, he noticed that most of the 'out' tracks seem to lead east, while a few head back north towards O'Hare.

"lads - that was quite a foray into the caves....."

O'rek clutches his necklace and touches Ewell on the shoulder with a prayer...

OOC:
"brief"??? Ha!

Also, you're "You're in a marsh." comment made me feel like I was back by a white house near the woods again...

Code: Select all

You're in a marsh. There are paths leading east and north.
>Go North
You're on a trail in a marsh. There are paths leading north and south.
>Go North
You're on a trail in a marsh. Off in the distance you hear the cry of a bird. The main path leads north and south. A smaller trail leads east into the marsh.
>Go North
First order of business should be to get a good distance (half hour?) away from the trog lair and then find a defensible position (along the cliffs?) and have people rest for a turn, as I assume penalties could be assessed for doing too much activity without resting.

Marching order suggestions: Gwillt can take lead again, since he knows the way back to O'Hare.

Ummm... that's the only suggestion I have. I assume we'll have to have the strongest characters help to carry the unconscious Darrin. Ewell has 18, Grim has 17, Strom has 16, but Strom and Ewell are both in heavy armour. Wouldn't be bad to have Strom free to act quickly, though, as he has the most remaining HP of the lot.

Probably people are going to have to offer up where they think their character should go or wants to go in the order before we decide anything definite...

Epsilon slides to the middle of the pack.

he takes some time to try and wipe blood (his and the togs) off his cloak and washes his face.

unaccustomed to being in such a state of disarray.

Strom has 84% of his health! Must have been that protective layer of vomit he covered himself with!!

And my vote is to head back to town. We have no heals and most of the party is one hit away from death.

Absolutely, we should head back to town. But most DMs have rules about resting on occasion (must rest 1 turn for every six turns spent moving through dungeons, must rest one turn after combat, etc.) or else you start accumulating penalties to your To Hit and to DEX bonuses and the like. I think we should put distance between us and the trog lair, but then rest some. I don't know if dmw71 has a rule on this, but I generally assume it unless indicated otherwise, as I believe it is a standard, at least in some of the older rule books.

So I think we need to stop somewhere along the way for a rest. 1 turn isn't going to make that much of a difference, but everyone having a -1 To Hit modifier would suck if we bumped into something on the way back to O'Hare...

If our DM indicates he does not have such a rule, then yes, let's just head straight back. Resting seems more realistic, though.

Resting will be a good idea, yes.

Ewell follows in line, (helping to carry Darrin).
I feel like I just rested, but I suppose some of you older folks could use a break.

I know I've read it before. I wouldn't have enforced it if it wasn't mentioned, but it does make sense. What's an hour of waiting, which can be resolved in a single post (assuming there are no encounters). ;)

Fimmion nods silently as he listens to the group's discussion about rest and heading back to O'Hare. "I understand that some of our fighters are quite worn out. If we do set up camp somewhere near the cliffs, I would be more than happy to help keep guard or watch, which ever. Maybe set up a quick meal if the situation presents itself?" You can tell that the cook is not as gloomy now that he his talking about what he knows best, food! "Yes, the local flora near O'Hare is plentiful in natural sustenance, not to mention the natural flavors that arise out of smoking some tree bark. With a little bit of meat and water from the river I can..." Most of everything he says afterwards is just random mutterings as he surveys his immediate surroundings for such ingredients; though the cook suspects that he will not find much in the middle of the marsh, at least anything that is safe to use.
Even a child that receives one bit of praise has the ability to excel in a single talent, and those who receive regular encouragement can feel confidence, achieve success, and become leading members of society. yes I think you're stuck with Loadstone, I bet if you tried to kill him you couldn't!

Do you attempt to perform this now, or wait until you move to your safe location?
