Leaving the mystery of the unnatural trees to those that understand such things, Varkos moves to check the exits of the cavern. He sticks close to the wall as he moves round the room. At each exit he looks for approaching enemies.

Wulfgard looks to Zafalia. "You know this situation better than any of us. What is our next move? Do we try to save these trees, destroy them, or leave them alone?"

Al'Zur, elven or not, follows Varkos, having no interest in the poor trees. "Careful my friend." he says to Varkos. "No rush here."

While the others ponder the trees and the noises get louder, Varkos and Al'Zur, seemingly without worry, poke their heads around the corner to peek down the western passage.

Ilhalevar eyes the trees with a look of concern. "Is there nothing we can do for them?" she asks nobody in general. They are obviously too big to move so she wonders if at least breaking the pots that contain them would help...

The Ranger forces his eyes away from the pitiable "trees" and seeks the sign of the rooty one, along with any other he can detect.

The little druidess gets back to her feet and steels herself. "I wish I knew what to do here, Wulfgard. I am truly torn. A big part of me wishes they could be saved, perhaps finding some way to remove the taint of the evil magics that has caused this. But the other part of me sees them as horrible abominations to nature, and to the sanctity of the Oerth Mother and all true Treants. Regardless, they are awakening. From what I sense, they will be so in moments. I do not know if we can bypass them," she opines solemnly with a look to the cleric and the others present as she quickly sets down her spear and torch and makes to retrieve two flasks from her pack. "Best we have oil ready, just in case..."

.

Day 2 – 7:15 a

.

As the noises get louder, Varkos and Al'Zur check first one then the other exit from this chamber.

As the party discusses what can be done the muttering becomes more angry and louder and it is at this point that the trees start to move. Their branches are swinging around aggressively, and they step from their pots. It's almost painful to see, they don't break the pots at all, but their "feet" look warped and distended, and smooshed (for lack of a better word) not like healthy spreading roots at all. Their feet look almost painful to walk on, but it doesn't seem to slow them down as they advance toward the party, branches swinging aggressively.

Varkos and Al'Zur are on the other side of the trees (see map) but no one in the party is unable to run out of the room. Either way, the party is not surprised, but I'll need an initiative roll from one person. Please state what actions you'll be taking this round and make the corresponding rolls for those actions. Let me know if there are any questions.

The trees are blue the water is grey, everyone should be noted. Zafalia and Son of Thunder have torches and Wulfgard his lamp - these are your sources of light, besides the glowing moss. Our specialists, using their specialized weapons, will have two attacks each this round.

Wulfgard, convinced that his bludgeoning weapons will do little good against such creatures, steps back into the passageway. He reaches into his pack and fishes out two flasks of oil.

Can he throw a flask of oil this round, or would he need to wait?

The ranger curses under his breath. He was about to suggest a quick run across the room to the next exit when the demon-trees began their opening salvo. He quickly hands his torch to Wulfgard, who has wisely brought forth oil.By the Great Spirits, Priest, throw that oil. He will then move to attack.

To hit: [1d20+2] = 14+2 = 16, damage with WS spear, large: [1d8+3] = 8+3 = 11
To hit: [1d20+2] = 1+2 = 3, damage with WS spear, large: [1d8+3] = 2+3 = 5

I assumed they are size: L

With tears in her little halfling eyes, Zafalia takes a few steps backward while uncorking one of her flasks of lamp oil and throws it hard at one of the approaching demon-trees. (Not the one that Son of Thunder is moving to attack, so as to avoid friendly fire!).

"Throw oil upon them, Wulfgard! We must burn them!" she cries.

Zaf: To Hit, Thrown weapon or object (+3 Dex bonus) [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23

OOC: Huzzah on that roll! :P

Ron, can we determine the trees' movement rate when they step out of their pots and move on us? I'm hoping that those party members that were going to throw oil this round can still do so before being engaged?

Assuming Wulfgard can throw the oil this round, he will, throwing it at a different tree than the one Zafalia targeted, but still away from the ranger. If the centermost tree meets that criteria, that's his target.

Oil, thrown: [1d20+1] = 14+1 = 15

Varkos moves with Al'Zur and will attack if needed:

Longsword [1d20+3] = 10+3 = 13 Dam [1d8+5] = 6+5 = 11

Yes you can throw a flask this round no problem.

Funny the description says they are medium, but they are 9 feet so yes, they are Large size.

They move painfully slow, probably about 1/6 as fast as the parties slowest member.

I'm hoping to update tomorrow morning and give other folks chances to respond.

Probably about 7'. They could leave yes, easily, no.
The trees, in the short time that you've seen them move slowly and awkwardly on their feet. The branches are pretty whippy fast though.

Ilhalevar pulls out her new staff and hisses, "Quick... everyone retreat through the openings. That way we can restrict how many of them we're facing. And maybe the sight of one of them burning in the tunnel will be enough to make the others flee..."

Seeing the devil-spawned trees very slow movement and hearing Ilhalevar's observations and consequent wise advice, Zafalia nods and makes to fall back into the passageway with her and the others. She looks on in concern at the ranger, as well as towards AL'Zur and Varkos. "Son of Thunder, fall back into the passage before they surround you! Al"Zur, Varkos, fall back into the passage there, so they can't easily engage you!"

Al'Zur stops to pull two flasks of oil from his pack, handing one to Varkos. "Wait a bit, let us see what happens before we reveal our presence."
