Gutram, Ranger

Gutram presses forward side by side his companions now, against the commander.
He watches the commander's movements, assesses his armor and defenses, and takes a hard upward swing at the commander with his hand axe.

Eldrek, Fighter (HP 13/16)

Seeing the sergeant fall, Eldrek turns his full attention to the commander. Shoulder to shoulder with his comrades he takes another mighty swing at the commander.

The First Platton - Fourth Round

The melee drags on as the duergar frantically fight for their vile lives. Eldrek, Kargoth and Drog, and Gutram focus their efforts on the commander as Vane engages the recently awakened sergeant. Gutram assesses the commander, but finds no flaw in the duergar's plate armor. Eldrek and Kargoth press the offensive, giving the ranger the opening he needs to deliver a devastating attack against the commander. The commander staggers and Drog lunges with crushing jaws and brings him to a knee.

Vane thrusts his sword at the sergeant as that same duergar ripostes, but neither are able to gain advantage over the other.

The commander and his aide both swing their picks at Eldrek, but the dwarf fighter keeps them at bay.

Penuttler and Brezebar hold from the melee and observe their companions. The townsfolk clutch their implements and watch with wide eyes. Actions!

Kargoth / battle

The cleric sees that while the commander is outnumbered, Vane faces his enemy alone. So Kargoth pivots and attacks the seargeant, hoping he may surprise or get a flank attack advantage while doing so.

Drog keeps up his viscious attack on the commander.

Penuttler will keep his distance, knowing that any attacks on his part may very well hit the friendly melee combatants at this point.

Eldrek, Fighter (HP 13/16)

Eldrek feints, hoping to draw the commander, and then quickly spins around and thrusts with his sword at the commander's side.

The First Platton - Fifth Round

Eldrek attempts to feint against the commander, but the duergar commander sees through the ruse: preventing any further exploitation by Gutram or Kargoth. The commander then raises his pick for an overhead chop, but Eldrek lunges with blinding speed and runs his blade through the commander's exposed under arm. The duergar falls to the ground, lifeless.

Vane continues to swing at the sergeant's back, but the strewn bodies and smoke make it difficult to penetrate the deep-dwarf armor.

Unable to move past the commander and Gutram to assail the sergeant, Kargoth swings over Drog at the duergar private and connects. The private is stunned for only a moment, but it is long enough for Drog to finish him.

With the commander and his aide defeated, Gutram attacks the remaining duergar sergeant's left flank. The ranger connects with the dwarf's armor, but is unable to penetrate the iron banding.

Desperate for his life and assuming that no quarter will come from the near-surface dwarves, the duergar sergeant assails Eldrek. Unfortunately for the doomed deep dwarf, the wild attack is easily avoided.

Penuttler and Brezebar continue to observe from a distance.

Kargoth / combat

"Praise Clangeddin!" exhorts Kargoth the cleric upon downing the duergar.

He turns grimly to the remaining deep dwarf. "Prepare to meet your maker," Kargoth intones as he swings Godswrath.

Drog follows his master's lead and bites at the duergar's leg.

The First Platoon - Aftermath

The final duergar is defeated. He curses the races of man and dwarf before joining his company in long sleep. The tunnel is littered with the fallen and the oil continues to burn the duergar that died in its flames. The smoke and stench of burnt duergar nearly makes the air in this tunnel unbreathable.

The villagers cheer the victory. One of them states, "The fiends are defeated! Let us destroy the supports and we can bury them as well". Another responds, "Aye, we don't want them walking about as angry spirits and bothering us in the dead of night".

An inspection of the dead reveals that the commander was armored in plated mail, while the two sergeants and the seven soldiers are all in splinted mail. Each was armed with a light crossbow and an accompanying case of 10 bolts. On their belts are daggers, and in their hands are light picks. The soldiers each wear a copper torc, the two sergeants each one of silver, and the commander one of gold.

Actions!

Kargoth / tunnel

Kargoth looks about the fallen, thanking Clangeddin for the swift and true victory for the Light. He pats Drog on the head affectionately. "Good boy."

"Let us gather torcs and later split proceeds," says the dwarf cleric, gathering them up in his sack. He ignores the weapons and picks. "Expanding their tunnels maybe?"

"I've wanted plate mail but my purse has yet been light," says Kargoth, inspecting the commander's armor for fit and to see if it is too damaged to wear.

(Assuming this is the only tunnel leading to the barrack and dark magician chamber...) Turning to the eager villagers, Kargoth exclaims: "Hold, my friends! We must first complete our mission to the duergar cavern, and upon our return collapse the tunnel!"

Penuttler, after deeming the threat gone, approaches the group in a bit of a drunken stumbling of steps, with his chicken mask from the festival still on. He isn't drunk, he is just walking like one, acting silly. "Very fine fighting you guys! A duergar cavern you say? FASCINATING!" The shepherd makes some clucking noises, as if he actually were a chicken and looks at the previously fallen foes. "Would you guys have by chance... found any salted nuts on them? Oooo Oooo, may be even some sweets! I'd be happy to take those off your hands, hehe."

Vane strides over to the drunkard in the chicken outfit. They say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend... then bringing his sword point up to the chickens chest, Then again, I don't make friends easily.

How's about you tell us where you came from and what you are doing here... you could start by taking off the disguise...

"OHOHOHOHOOO! Okay then! I would be willing to share said salty sweet spoils if that's the case," the shepherd remarks, all the while laughing away with his hands up. Upon mention of said disguise, Penuttler places his raised hands upon his head and makes a lifting motion. "The feathery thing just WILL NOT come off, hehe!"

Before the shepherd can even chime in with anything else, the townsfolk nearby interrupt and say in half-annoyed voices: "Don't bother with that sack of dung! He's nutter's and only knows how to take care of the sheeps." Everything else in the crowd ranges from silly insults to murmurings about what the heck Penuttler is doing down here anyways.

Vane eyes the chicken while the townsfolk chatter away. Sheathing his sword, he turns and walks off shaking his head, half talking to himself and chuckling quietly, ...a sheep herder ... I'd wager he's doing more than herding those sheep...
