Action Thread #9 - The Forest
Day 5 - Morning - The Forest/Along the River
Musical Theme: Mysterious Forest
And so the party moves onward and deeper into the forest, following the river's course to avoid getting lost in this unfamiliar terrain. And a wise decision it soon proves, for the forest with clustered tall pines and oak trees appears a place fairly easy to loose oneself in without a point of reference.
The terrain drops gently as they walk and eventually the cliffs that edge the river on both margins turn into margins. Here and there Andrin hears the sounds of small animals, but always distant. Whatever critters live here must be of the skittish sort.
It has been a little under than an hour of travel when something happens.
A deer, its eyes wide with fear, its flanks streaked with blood from a deep gash, bursts forth from the undergrowth barely 20 yards to the party's right. For just a brief moment it pauses, breathless and lathered with sweat. But then the raucous blear of a horn and the baying of hounds sound from the direction whence it came and the unfortunate beast stirs to flight one more and delves into the eastern undergrowth, almost in the direction the adventurers were traveling to, and vanishes.
The horn sounds again, nearer this time and the dog barks come higher and clearer.

Re: Action Thread #9 - The Forest
Ogirdor readies his bow and positions himself behind a tree, hidden from the direction from which the horn was sounded
Take cover he tells the others and keep weapons and spells ready.

Swilbosh quickly moves into cover and stands ready for action.
Re: Action Thread #9 - The Forest
The dwarf picks a tree and stands behind it, waiting, with staff.

Malone will take cover and prepare for battle.

"Spells, he says?" Stonjuz shakes his head in disgust and adds, ....
We are probably all out of spells. 'Should have rested' will surely be written on my grave marker.

Andrin grabs a handful of mistletoe for quick spellcasting out of his bag, and has his sling ready otherwise.

Ozborn takes Ogirdor's suggestion and dives for whatever cover is at hand, trying to place a tree or a bush between himself and the sound of the hunt. He draws his bow and listens, ready to stand up and fire if a threat draws near.

"I have a bit of magic yet at my command," says Thurinor. "But let's be sure we do not fire on those that might otherwise prove friendly. The hunt is an honored tradition among many in my homeland." Though Thurinor does not make himself a target, he does not throw himself into the bushes either, but stands ready off to one side of the nearest tree, his crossbow gripped in one hand, his other hand straying nonchalantly to his belt pouch.

Day 5 - Morning - The Forest/Along the River
Musical Theme: Forest Hunter Approaching
Several of the party members scurry here and there seeking concealment. The sounds of dogs get louder with each passing second and are joined soon by noises of rustling branches and breaking twigs. Whatever their cause must be very close...
A hobgoblin carrying a bow and leading 3 large hunting dogs by a leash appears like an uninvited guest from the same direction whence the dear came, apparently in hot pursuit of it.
The humanoid notices the presence of Andrin and Thurinor some 25 yards away as soon as he comes into view. The canines pull at their bonds snapping and barking loudly, eager to be released.
Their master does not make them wait a moment longer than necessary. As he makes for his arrows he releases the leashes.
Action Declaration phase ON, folks. Remember, the GM will roll for Initiative once all are done.

Malone will ready his halberd to slice any dog that comes his way, attempting to stay out of direct fire from the arrows.
To Hit with Halberd: [1d20] = 1, Dam(s/m): [1d10+6] = 4+6 = 10, Dam(l): [2d6+6] = 6+6 = 12 and badly miss if that is the case
and a second time if this is round 1, using his specialization. Not sure how the rule works regarding that if he is waiting on the foe...

The ranger raises his bow and tries to shoot the hobgoblin before the humanoid can fire any arrows:
Bow, short, flight arrow - specialist - To hit: [1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23, Damage (s/m): [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6, Damage (L): [1d6+2] = 1+2 = 3

Judging the timing of his attack, Stonjuz waits until the dogs are in range to swing the staff at one of them.
to hit w/Staff (2 hand): thaco 20 [1d20] = 15, Dmg (s,m) [1d6+2] = 2+2 = 4, Dmg (L) [1d6+2] = 4+2 = 6

Thurinor sighs, "Inhospitable..." and utters the words to a spell, weaving with slender fingers a net of magical protection in front of him.

Ozborn will stand up and fire two arrows at the closest oncoming dog:
To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 1
uhhh... critical fail...
To hit w/ Short Bow, sheaf arrows: [1d20+3] = 20+3 = 23, damage (s/m/L): [1d8] = 3
critical hit... that's better...

Day 5 - Morning - The Forest/Along the River
Round 1
Party Initiative: [1d6] = 5, NPC/Monster Initiative: [1d6] = 6
Segments: Hobgoblin/Dogs 5th, Party 6th, Andrin 8th,
[1d100] = 34
[1d100] = 87
[1d100] = 94
The hunting dogs come charging forward, spittle flying from their muzzles in their eagerness to bit something, and pounce upon the spellcasters before they can complete their spells. One attacks Andrin and two attack Thurinor.
Hunting Dog Attack: [1d20] = 13, Damage: [1d4] = 2
Andrin is bitten and his Entangle spell fizzles.
Hunting Dog Attack: [1d20] = 17, Damage: [1d4] = 1
Hunting Dog Attack: [1d20] = 19, Damage: [1d4] = 4
And Thurinor gets chomped by both of his canine assailants, leading to the same result for his Shield incantation.
[1d100] = 4
Their hobgoblin owner shots an arrow against Andrin...
Hobgoblin Bow Attack: [1d20] = 17, Damage: [1d6] = 4
[1d100] = 17
...and the missile finds its mark, however it is not the elf but the dog that was biting him, which falls to the side with a last, pitiful yelp.
LoL! That's what you get for shooting into meele
Then its the hobgoblin's turn to fall, when two arrows loosened by Ogirdor bury themselves in his chest. Unlike his own dog he just slew the humanoid dies silently.
Ozborn fires the last arrows in the round, taking aim at the dogs nipping at poor Thurinor he manages to hit one just behind the nape of the neck. The dog yips and recoils, still alive but obviously severely wounded.
Meanwhile, the companions see two more hobgoblins moving from where the first one and the dogs came, walking cautiously and using trees and brush for concealment. It is hard to tell from this distance but they are carrying some sort of blades on their hands.
End of Round 1

Situation: Thurinor is in melee with two dogs, one of them badly wounded and two new hobgoblins are moving behind concealment around the area where the downed archer lies. Everyone except Andrin and Thurinor is by a tree or bush nearer to the river.

Osborn will drop his bow, draw his short swords and run to the aid of Thurinor.
Ooc: assuming I don't get to attack this round, but just in case:
To hit w/ Short Sword, main hand: [1d20+2] = 6+2 = 8, damage (s/m): [1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7, damage (L): [1d8+3] = 8+3 = 11

Oh, boy. Guess I should've taken my chances firing into melee... Maybe I'll draw an attack at least...
