Normally I would say search for traps, send roguish types ahead to scout, but a naturally occurring sea cave with a vampire and a time limit may be better to just cross fingers and toes?

Yeah, this is brutal.

Our best hope is that the other swarms break when we lol the first one. They have extremely low Morale.

Given the horror, I'm gonna ask... It says when you fend off a swarm, you inflict 1d4 damage. Will I get damage bonuses with that, or is it just minor, incidental damage?

Dagda!

Some questions. Can a still free person fend off rats on others? Wave torch or similar over the swarm, granting an ally the +4 on the save?
Is the fire currently blocking off additional rats, or will they continue to move toward us despite the fire?
Can regular weapons damage swarms? I'm still iffy on this from the bats.

Yaaay, we get to test out the Mortal Wounds table! :D
Poor Ishanter, though

I'm reading it as being a straight 1d4 damage.

Yeah, I'm going to say that someone unaffected can fed rats off another person. The fire will continue to burn for another round; I will be making a morale check for the rats at the beginning of the next round. I am going to randomly determine whether or not the fire will block additional swarms. Regular weapons can damage swarms:
Character can reduce the effects by warding off the swarm with a torch, weapon or similar object, or by fleeing the swarm. Warding off a swarm with a torch or weapon will inflict 1d4 points of damage to the swarm. Fire-based and cold-based attacks will also damage a swarm, and a sleep spell will cause the entire swarm to go dormant.
Remember to give actions for your henchmen, if any!

Poor Ishanter. I think she may be dead and gone, then.

So each person free can fend off rats, dealing 1d4 damage and granting a +4 on the save to another party member... But without my spear that's not happening far away. This particular tunnel is on 5' wide, yes? We were walking single file and not two abreast?

For purposes of movement I have assumed you guys are still in the "room" at the base of the shaft. So the tunnel would form a nice checkpoint.

That makes sense. Okay, I'll put together something then.

I am currently also caught up in work... :(

One question: would it be more effective to try to hit the rats with Styrs axe instead of stomping them?

Yeah, the rules are fairly ambiguous here, so I will make a call and clarify:

1)You can attempt to swing at/damage the rats with a weapon or torch. I'm going to say this is an auto-hit resulting in 1d4 damage, regardless of the weapon/attack used. Attacking in such a manner does not grant the +4 bonus to your save.
2)You can attempt to ward the rats off you, which grants a +4 bonus to save but inflicts no damage. In this case, should a PC wish to retreat he may do so, suffering no damage.
3)You can attempt to ward rats off both yourself and a fallen compatriot, granting each a +2 bonus to save. Boni may not be stacked.
4)Those fallen can attempt to stand and ward off rats at the same time. I'm going to say that because of the nature of being swarmed and bitten by dozens of filthy vermin there is no bonus to the save.

Does this help clarify/change anyone's course of actions?

I will edit Harald's post to indicate he is both standing and warding off rats.

Styr keeps stomping then. If all attacks are equal, class and strength bonus is king and I guess we have to kill them somehow...

No problem on the delays. Combat is finicky, I'd rather everything be clear and get it right than hustle and make a mess. :)
