Along the Old North Road

#1 Post by Edeldhur »

Along the Old North Road lies the lonely Margravate of Blackmarch.

Long a quiet bastion of the borderlands, malign powers have now turned their eyes hence, and dark machinations threaten to tip the region into chaos. The call has gone out - who will answer?

A light rain falls on the heath as your group travels along the Old North Road - happenstance brought you together as you headed northwards - some of you looking for a chance to make their name in Blackmarch, others simply searching for employment or excitement, and yet others maybe wanting to do the 'right thing' for the peoples of the region. Who knows what motivates those crazy enough to take on a life of adventuring?

At length, you sight a plume of smoke, curling in the distance, perhaps a quarter mile up the road. Drawing closer, you find the black smoke billows from a distant, burning, overturned cart.

From this distance (about 120 yards), you can see there is movement around the wreck, as several small creatures mill about - even from here you can hear they joyful screeches and hollers.

What will you do?

(Let's get this rolling!)

Hreigă of Căléd

It had been weeks since she was banished from her village as a witch. Since the death of Gristeid, people of the village had little use for her. Not as skilled as the old wise woman, and with little interest in serving as the village midwife, and even less interested in serving as a wife for some stone-headed farmer, the village truly had little to offer her especially without Gristeid to add to her knowledge. Then there was the incident with Stauffen, and after that, the village elder told her to be gone at first light. Not content to wait for that she set out at nightfall with only the Maiden Moon to guide her.

In these lands, it was not safe to travel alone, so she joined this small band. They seemed competent, or at least somewhat competent, and safety in numbers was foremost in her mind, at least for now. She felt safer amongst them, or rather she did until she sighted the plume of smoke ahead. Her face impassive at the vision of the small creatures, she then glanced to her fellow travelers, wondering if they planned to intercede.

Bodkin Heldich

Bodkin is traveling with the group as he is destitute, unable to afford even the most basic of supplies. He is not known for his wit, but is clever in a vicious sort of way and friendly to most as long as you are not a goblin.

Approaching the burning cart. "Hey, those things could be goblin sized, I hate goblins."

Bodkin rushes forward to get a better view of the situation and most importantly to determine if they are indeed goblins.

Cropey Oarswain

Cropey Oarswain had come to Blackmarch with a tiny hope of a new and better life, but as a realist he didn't hope for much and was content to be far away from home. As a deserter, there had been scant else to do but to set out on his own and travel to distant regions. He had escaped in the middle of the night, wearing his best set of clothes, a deep green wool cloak and burgundy tunic, worn over his leather armour. After a period of avoiding contact with others, when he had left his homelands he sought company and strength in numbers. Having sympathised with the plight of Hreigă and the others, he decided to see what he can do to be of aid to this rag-tag group of vagabonds.

Upon Bodkin's quick advance, Cropey joins the halfling a few paces behind him.

"Looks like we might have some trouble ahead, comrades! What do you see, Bodkin?"

Uthæs came out of the woods one day, no one knowing where he came from and why he was there. The party accepted him because of his talents, and he didn't ask for more.

The elf nodes at Cropey and says in a breath: "I will scout ahead." Without waiting for an answer he going ahead, looking for tracks and trying to appraise the situation.

Jůnger

Jůnger knows little of this world other than the monastery that he and his brother, ok just he grew up in. If those are goblins he knows he can only help a closer range. He will follow the several others that are moving towards the wreck.

Fearless Bodkin moved ahead, a tingling at the edge of his senses telling him these might be his most hated foes - goblins... He does not have to move very far ahead to in fact realize it is so.
There must be around a dozen goblins armed with spears and daggers - they seem to have have slain a mule and are roasting slabs of its meat skewered on the ends of their spears.

To Bodkin's side, Uthæs lurked ahead - the elf never really spoke much, but he always seemed to know what was expected of him. His keen eyes allowed him some cognizance of the scene ahead - he was able to discern a luckless dwarf laying motionless in the dirt nearby the cart, peppered with arrows, and one fat goblin sitting perched on a wooden chest, relishing his meal, and ordering the others around.

Talesian, she-devil with a sword

Talesian gritted her teeth at the sight of goblins. Her eyes blazed in anger or perhaps madness. She imagined staking their heads along the road as warning, their cocks in their mouths, their entrails draped along as a ghastly fence. The auburn-tressed warrior gripped sword and shield tightly.

Her military mind clicked. “Surprise with a missile barrage as the swords rush in?” she whispered to the others.

Bodkin

Bodkin will aim for attacking the fat goblin sitting on the chest. But if any are in striking range before that he will try and hit them with his mace.

"Take this for the millers son Jeb."

Mace [1d20+1]=5+1=6 to hit [1d6+1]=4+1=5 damage

Parrying the first melee attack directed at him, -5 to hit.

If he is close enough
Hammer: [1d20+1]=3+1=4 Dmg: [1d4+2]=4+2=6

Hreigă of Căléd

She sighed as the warriors rushed in to attack. The dwarf was likely dead and she would have preferred to either circled around them or waited until they were distracted but now was not the time to have second thoughts. She spoke the words as her mistress had taught her and sent the dagger-like missile at the one she thought was the leader.

Magic Missile: [1d4]=4+1

Talesian, warrior

In one fluid motion Talesian let fly a pair of arrows from her long bow.

Image

Long Bow 1st shot [1d20+1]=10+1=11, dam. [1d6]=2, 2nd shot [1d20+1]=2+1=3, dam. [1d6]=5

Is it okay to put in pictures? Reading around, I see some folks do that and it adds a nice visual element.

Cropey Oarswain

Not so keen on jumping into the melee straight away, Cropey gets as close he has to in order to deliver a dagger to the neck of the leader with precision. He takes a moment to aim and sends the dagger flying through the air:

To hit: [1d20+1]=19+1=20, damage with thrown dagger: [1d4]=4

The group jumps into action immediately, engaging the foul creatures on the road.

The first to engage is Bodkin, his attack poorly aimed on the one who seems to be the chieftain - around him all the goblins erupt into hollers and hoots!
Jůnger follows suit, trying to cave in a goblin head, but missing also.
Uthæs bow shot ricochets off the side of the cart, and gets lost in the distance
Hreigă's Magic Missile cannot miss however, and it strikes the goblin leader unerringly, making the creature howl in pain.
Talesian's ranged attacks can unfortunately miss though, and they do.
Cropey's dagger also hits its mark, flying through the air at the monstrous goblin chieftain - the creature bleeds and barely stands!

The goblin chief tries to react and attack the small halfling, but he the minute fighter is too nimble for him, parrying the attack harmlessly away.
Three others fall on Bodkin though, one of them scoring a painful hit! (3 points of damage)

Likewise three others shriek and attack Jůnger - a nasty short sword getting past the cleric's defences to gash his leg.(4 points of damage)

The last two goblins rush out madly - one attacking Uthaes and missing by a mile, the other growling, spitting and charging Taliesian but to no effect.

Grumbling for being so clumsy, Uthæs drops his bow and brings out his swords to strike with all his frustration the goblin who attacked him.

Sword attack [1d20+1]=16+1=17, damage [1d8]=4

Uthæs's slice is brutal, and leaves the goblin dead on the ground, blood pooling around the wretched creature.

Bodkin

Bodkin attacks the chief again.

Mace [1d20+1]=8+1=9 to hit [1d6+1]=2+1=3 damage

Parrying the first melee attack directed at him, -5 to hit.

Might be hard to hit but he can't hit anyone either.
