MILLION CREDIT COMM JOB

#1 Post by atpollard »

Since we have left the "House of Cards" adventure thread behind for the moment and slipped into the Arctic Comm job, let's start a new TOPIC for the new adventure!

4:30 PM Bed & Breakfast [26] - D.J., Herbie, Val & Mick
The group reassembled, goodies in hand as the plan coalesced from an idea to reality.

You had inquired about 1. Communication with the Village and 2. Whether the ATV from the original repair crew was still on site with its supplies.

1. The official designation is “Arctic Hamlet X-2”, although the locals call it “Achimasahitunanuch”. This community of about 500 persons is remote, but not isolated, and has satellite COMM service to the rest of the planet. It is located about 400 km from the Arctic Relay Station and has the nearest Government Airport/Grav Port. A search of public records yields COMM listings for Two Utility Companies (Gas and Electric), A Construction Company, a “Factory” (if a manufacturing facility with 5 employees can be called a factory), Five stores (Grocery, General Merchandise, Clothing, Vehicles, Building Supplies), one restaurant, and a handful of miscellaneous Services (mostly Government). This is where VET had contacts and where the “rescue” party came from. It is the “logical” starting point for any expedition to the Tower.

2. A study of the data reveals a brief glimpse of the ATV in one of the frames, so it was there when the rescue team left the Arctic Relay Station. The locals have no recollection of it, they were looking for people and terrified.

3. D.J. invests a few minutes talking with George about “Arctic Hamlet X-2”. George remembered it as one of his regular stops on the way to the Relay Station. George offered that it was rough driving from X-2 to the Relay Station because you never knew if the road would be there that trip or not … snow drifts sometimes obliterated stretches of it of miles. “Tracks over wheels for that route.” was his advice.

4. George also informed you of a place he stopped at on that route called “Saint Oyand”, population 160. They were a small community that preferred to keep to themselves with only minimal outside contact with the Government. Sort of a “Tribal” thing, but nice folk. “Oyland” was only 100 km from the Relay Station. George once called in a Bush Plane to medivac a wounded Oylander out of there by landing on the road.

TRANSPORTATION:
The group met with mixed results. Val’s contacts were able to provide a craft that was everything you could have hoped for. Their “Bush Plane” was actually Grav Powered STOL and Mach 1 capable (1200 kph top speed, 900 kph cruise, 140 kph NOE). Given your preference, they can fly you there at 900-1200 kph on radar or 140 kph below radar … or anyone with PILOT Certification (Grav Vehicle-1+ or Pilot-1+) can rent the craft and fly it yourself.
The Tracked and Wheeled vehicles available in the Tropics are not hardened for Arctic Conditions and would immediately fail (mechanically), so you will need to acquire ground transportation in the Arctic. [rent “Bush Plane” = Cr 2800 per day; rent “pilot” = Cr 400 per day]

BART TOBIT:
Bart reserved a tracked ATV at “Arctic Village x-2” for 24 hours [just in case], acquired 3 satellite COMM units with video [TL 10, C400, 0.7 kg, 14 hr battery, 300 km range] and located a TL 11 Electronics Shop [Cr 20,000; 500 kg; good for Electronics-3 rolls on TL 9-11]

[NOTE the “stuff” added to the Maps & Reference Topic that includes some info on Tools. DJ has what he needs for ELEC-2 with him … you just asked about locating a “Portable Workshop” and this is as close as you got due to “Vehicle” issues like Tropical Vehicles don’t like Arctic Cold.]

COLD WEATHER CLOTHING:
Locating specific “Cold Weather Clothing” in a Tropical City proved difficult. However, that is not the same as unsuccessful. While ice and snow are not an issue here, they do have PILOTS that operate at high altitudes and even SPACE, so you were able to locate two items that might prove useful:
  • General Purpose Vacc Suit (TL 9): [8 kg; Cr 7000; -3 DEX] A bulky suit, gloves, boot, and helmet that protects against temperatures from +1000 C to -1000 C with the equivalent of CLOTH armor.
  • Body Pressure Suit (TL 9): [2 kg; Cr 14,000] A skin tight suit, gloves, boot, and soft helmet that protects against temperatures from +50 C to -50 C with the equivalent of JACK armor. May be worn beneath clothing.
  • 4-hour Portable Life Support System (TL 9): [7 kg; Cr 3000] A backpack-like device that provides oxygen and battery power to the Vacc Suit for the listed duration.
  • 24-hour Portable Life Support System (TL 9): [14.5 kg; Cr 5000] A backpack-like device that provides (recycled) oxygen and battery power to the Vacc Suit for the listed duration.
You would likely have little immediate use for the PLSS, but the Vacc Suit or Body Pressure Suit should meet your immediate cold protection needs and serve as Flight Suits should you acquire a spacecraft [at least until you upgrade them to TL 11].

WEAPONS:
The initial quest to purchase firearms turned up the typical selection with nothing “Military” or “Exotic” readily available under the current Law Level and in a hurry.
  • Automatic Pistol (1 kg; Cr 210)
  • Revolver (1 kg; Cr 155)
  • Carbine (3.1 kg; Cr 210)
  • Rifle (4.5 kg; Cr 222)
  • Shotgun (4.5 kg; Cr 160)
No scopes, optics or suppressors are available for sale on the General Market at this time and location.

WILDERNESS/CLIMBING SUPPLIES:
Mick has terrific success putting together your “Backpacks” and there are THREE versions to select from. The higher the TL, the lighter and more expensive the equipment becomes.
  • Adventure Backpack (TL 5): (Cr 1000; 24 kg) includes optical Binoculars, folding Grapnel hook (thrown), Magnetic Compass, Iron Pitons, and Water Purification tablets.
  • Adventure Backpack (TL 8): (Cr 2000; 18 kg) includes IR Binoculars, Grapnel Gun, Inertial Locator, Adhesive Pitons, and Water Filtration System.
  • Adventure Backpack (TL 11): (Cr 3000; 12 kg) includes Multi-Spectrum Binoculars, Grapnel Gun, Inertial Locator, Piton Gun, and Atmospheric Water Distillation System.
[A brief OOC Note: There is more specific data in the “Maps and Reference” topic, however, the intent is to avoid nitpicking specifics and create the BACKPACK equivalent of a “Ship’s Locker” where anything NORMAL that you need is in there without too much fuss detailing exactly WHAT each item is. In general higher TL items perform equal or better than low TL items, but all items will get most jobs done. What is NOT included are TENTS and ARCTIC ONLY items like Crampons, Snowshoes and Skis. These can be obtained easily in the ARCTIC if desired.]
Mick “Law Level” roll in City = Roll [10] … greater than LL7, so no incident.
Communication with “Village” = Roll [11] … extreme success.
“ATV still on site?” = Roll [7] … minimal success.
Info from George = Roll [11] … extreme success.
Grav Transport = Roll [10] … extreme success.
ATV = Roll [5] … fail.
Sat COMM = Roll [9] … success.
Workshop = Roll [9] … success.
Cold Weather Clothing = Roll [6] … minimal success.
Guns = Roll [7] … minimal success.
Wilderness/Climbing supplies = Roll [12] … exceptional success.

4:30 PM Olivia’s Tent - [O near 19] - Jim & Joe

Jim and Joe visited Olivia’s tent. She was interested in your offer as she was ALWAYS looking for work. Her greatest reluctance concerned the length of the deployment and the care of her animals. Assured that this was a “day or two” mission rather than “weeks” deployment, she accepted. When you explained the danger from Arctic Critters, she selected her LAG as the weapon to bring along … together with twelve magazines of 5 rounds each: four “ball”, four “HE” and four “AP”.

She had Revolvers, Auto-Pistols and Shotguns for sale, but no silencers, optics or body armor in stock.
Olivia roll = [7]+1 = 8 … accepts the offer to provide support.
Olivia special equipment roll = [3] … no silencers or other fancy pistol add ons available.

Olivia (Age 24):
Below average (2-5) STR, SOC; Average (6-8) DEX, INT, EDU; Above average (9-C) END.
Ex-Army lieutenant [PTSD].
Light Assault Gun (LAG): [4.5 kg; Cr 620; TL 8] A 5-round magazine (0.5 kg; Cr 20) fires a 20 mm (30 g) bullet at 450 m/s. Olivia requires a bipod to shoot vs -2 penalty.

DJ

Looking at the price of the electronics shop DJ suggests that they make do with his professional electronics kit and anything that might have been left behind by the first team. He also suggests that they rent the 'bush plane' but don't worry about pilots, we have enough people with the skills that we simply get added to the rental agreement.

He points out that it's going to be difficult to do this job in the bulky vacc suits available, so that he ought to have a BPS, and anyone who might be needed to lend him a hand (electronics-0) or who might need to climb the mast at any point

Jim has Electronics-0, Engineering-1, and Computer-0, if that helps.

Assuming DJ has opened a voice or text group, Mick will broadcast to the group that he is striking out with finding Arctic Clothing and Gear. Body pressure suits are overkill for the Arctic and run 14k cr apiece. He can’t even purchase 1 with his cash limits.

He asks Bart to inquire at the Arctic Village about their high and low Arctic clothing and travel supplies. If stock is sufficient, please reserve enough and the right sizes clothing and travel backpacks for each person…preference is with high TL. He’ll send his digital anatomical avatar to Bart to forward on.

He’ll announce his intentions to purchase 2 highest TL adventure/climbing backpacks…in case the group needs to separate and because in harsh environs, 1 is none and 2 is 1. If there’s no opposition, he’ll make the purchase and wait for Bar’ts reply.

He’ll also ask Joe if Olivio has any body armor to sell or contribute to the cause.

5 PM Grav Port - STOL Bush Plane

#6 Post by atpollard »

Time to move this thing along ...

5 PM Grav Port - STOL Bush Plane

The team was loaded aboard the Bush Plane as it quickly accelerated along the sintered earth runway. The wheels lifted from the ground followed by a mechanical humm as they retracted and the plane climbed to cruising altitude and speed. Within a few minutes, you were above the clouds with no sound except the noise of the wind rushing over the composite body of the craft.

The team member at the controls engaged the auto-pilot and announced that you were cruising at 900 kph and on course for the Arctic Station. The group had a little over 4 hours to decide where to land … [ETA just before 10 PM Brulantfort Time]

Arctic Hamlet X-2 (pop 500) located 400 km from the Relay Tower.
Arctic Thorp “Saint Oyand” (pop 160) located 100 km from the Relay Tower.
Wilderness landing at the Relay Tower.

From your research, a Tracked Vehicle should be available at either community.
The Hamlet has better Communication with the CITIES and likely WEAPONS for sale, but is a longer drive to the Relay Tower (400 km @ 33 kph = 12 hours).
The Thorp has no regular Communication with the CITIES and few WEAPONS for sale, but is a short drive to the Relay Tower (100 km @ 33 kph = 3 hours).
It would also be possible to stop at the Hamlet and then fly on to the Thorp.

7 PM STOL Bush Plane over ocean

#7 Post by atpollard »

7 PM STOL Bush Plane over ocean

In the back of the plane, the group is watching a NEWS REPORT …

A repair crew had arrived in Arctic Hamlet X-2 after abandoning their attempt to claim the Million Credit Prize. According to the news, they had set out for the Tower but their vehicle was plagued by mechanical failures due to the intense Arctic cold, so they were forced to turn back. Their wheeled vehicle eventually got stuck on deep snow and had to be abandoned. Two members froze to death before a rescue party could reach the two remaining survivors. One survivor was in serious medical conditions but expected to live and the other survivor was treated for exposure and released. Only one of the corpses was recovered … partially consumed by scavengers.

… following that was lots of interviews with experts advising on the need for Arctic Hardened Vehicles and the merits of Tracks vs Wheels. There were also official warnings from the Government that the Arctic should not be traveled without trained guides, and sensationalized video about dangerous predators. All followed by armchair speculation about the fate of the original repair crew.

1. Val donated Cr 100,000 for the mission.
2. Arctic Supplies (like VEHICLES and CLOTHING) will be available in BOTH settlements.
3. Olivia has no Armor ... the Brulantfort Police would have a fit if people wore armor ... you might need to shoot a Bear or Wolf, but needing Bulletproof Vests makes police nervous.

Besides the two backpacks, Mick would have bought enough climbing harnesses for each member of the party plus Olivio. If the backpacks don’t have enough, he’ll buy more individual harnesses and two more ropes.

Before boarding the plane:

I highly recommend we all obtain Cold Weather Clothing and an Arctic Travel pack for each person. Neither are available here, but should be at X-2. Let’s plan to operate two operable vehicles…tracked or grav. Redundancy up there is mighty important. I already bought two TL11 Adventuring back packs, one for each cat/team. Also extra climbing harnesses and ice axes to ensure 1 for each Traveller. Needed when walking on the ice and snow….crevaces. I’ll fit you all up and show you how to use the gear on the flight up.
Cold Weather Clothing (1) Cr200. Protects against frigid weather. Outfit weighs 2kg and is treated as jack armor.
Cold Weather Clothing (10) Cr800. Protects against frigid weather. Outfit has no apparent weight and is treated
as jack armor.

Arctic Travel Backpack:
Each kit includes everything needed to travel in ice and snowy terrain, including Crampons for climbing, Snowshoes for walking and Skis for cross-country travel.
Arctic Travel Pack (TL 5): (Cr 350; 12 kg) Includes Crampons, Snowshoes and Skis.
Arctic Travel Pack (TL 8): (Cr 700; 6 kg) Includes Climbing Shoes, lightweight Snowshoes and lightweight Skis.
Arctic Travel Pack (TL 11): (Cr 1400; 3 kg) Includes “sticky” shoes, advanced composite Snowshoes and Skis.

Adventure Pack:
Each backpack contains everything a single individual needs for adventure and survival in the wilderness except clothing and shelter. It functions as a personal “ship’s locker” while in wilderness settings. A list of typical items includes: the Backpack, Binoculars, Flashlight, Grapnel (hook or gun), hand axe/pick, compass/inertial locator, pitons & rope, sleeping bag and water purification.

Adventure Backpack (TL 11): (Cr 3000; 12 kg) includes Multi-Spectrum Binoculars, Grapnel Gun, Inertial Locator, Piton Gun, and Atmospheric Water Distillation System.
Jim, I bet these villagers have animals. Even money you’ll be able to obtain something for your ferocious dog. Seen it before when I adventured down in the Antarctic.

Suggest we go to X-2 to gear up, info shop, and rent one Arctic ATV. Load it back on the plane then short hop it over to the Oyland and secure any other cold clothes and gear not available at X and rent another Arctic ATV. These rookie teams rushing up here might be draining the supplies in X. We set out for the station from Oyland in two ATVs and we salvage the VET teams arctic cat when we get there.

Everybody needs a solid-state dependable long arm with some stopping power. Few moving parts and simple actions. Same goes for a sidearm. If you ain’t real talented with a rifle, I recommend you go for a shotgun…good weapon for stopping power, just a little limited in range. Revolvers are a good, simple weapon too, as are snubs…especially if you have HEAP rounds. That can oversize a snub pistol’s power. Herbie and Joe, you say you have some talent with long arms, let’s get you each a rifle as well. Between Olivio, Joe, Herbie, and me; we should be able to take down threats at rifle distance. Shotguns and sidearms can take on closer ranged threats. You guys that were Army, do you agree? Joe, if you hang on to both a rifle and your shotgun there, you’re gonna be a force ya be reckoned with…

Olivio, did you say you have revolvers and shotguns in inventory?

Batteries won’t last as long in the extreme cold, and we’ll be wearing gloves. The predators up here will predate on anything that moves with warm blood or that once did…

I’ll carry an Adventure Gear backpack. Herbie, you look strong…wanna carry the other one? I’ll show you how to handle all the gear inside it after this talk.

As far as comms go, I don’t think we need the towns for this. That’s why we bought the satellite radios. Continuous comms wherever we go.

During the flight up:

Upon seeing the press coverage, Mick says:
Krieky, damn fools from all over rushing without knowing what they’re doing.
Something’s been nagging at my brain the past few minutes: villagers reported all the VET’s repair team’s gear was missing. But part of their ATV was shown in a frame of the video. Why is it there still when everything else from VET has vanished…that’s tickling my nugget. Something doesn’t add up.

If animals took out the VET team, where’s their gear? If people took out the VET team, why leave VET’s Arctic Cat? It’s hurting my head.

DJ

"That all sounds like a good plan Mick, pick stuff up in X-2, check the local conditions, and fly to this Oyand place if weather permits. You're right that something doesn't quite add up, but it might just be that they were killed by critters and people took their stuff because it was worth money. There is also no guarantee the ATV is still there, it might have been taken after the video was shot. With the creature danger, and possible people danger, we should go around in pairs, at a minimum. I know my way around pistol, so I'll get one of those and a shotgun."

Joe will comm back, "Olivia is in. She has a selection of weapons for sale but has no body armor or optics."

OOC: How fast would a trip to and from the city by the rail line that we came here on be? Having just ridden it here today, Joe would know. If it could be done in a couple hours there and back, it would make it easier to purchase some of the more exotic gear we need. If it's going to take the better part of a day it wouldn't be worth it.

We've clearly moved on from this. :)

Jim

Happy to do the flying, Jim came out of his mulling. "I can use a pistol better than a longarm, but I know which way to point at the bad guys. Would like to have both. I'd also like to fly over the comm site and do a little recon of the path from the site back to X2. That may tell us a good bit."

Jim has Pilot-1, Navigation-1, and FwdObs/Recon-1. He should be able to find the place and make some observations.

He'll also engage Olivia, and get her story. He'll trade his, if she talks. He's seen the cost of war, and wants to help her.

9:50 PM Arctic Hamlet X-2

9:50 PM Arctic Hamlet X-2

Jim took the controls. Staring out the windows at the ground below, you crossed over a large island or small continent 1000 km across covered in Mixed Forest with absolutely no sign of habitation. Then crossing another 1000 km of ocean reached the northern coast and a small fishing community. The Mixed forest soon transitioned to 1000 km of pure conifer forest before even the trees ended leaving patches of grass and scrub plants growing out of the snow. Still you flew another 1000 km to the point where the cold was too great for even the grass and scrub.

Those in the back looking out the windows could see only blackness. The sun had set early at this latitude.

In the Cockpit, Jim had the benefit of “Synthetic Vision” to enhance all EM wavelength and provide an artificially brightened view. Jim could see the radio beacon of your destination and the ground illuminated by wavelengths invisible to the human eye. Jim spotted the thermal images of grazers and chasers hiding among the grasses. Jim saw the crisp, wavy line marking the transition from the last of the grasses to the landscape beyond, dominated by snow broken by an occasional boulder covered in lichen.

Jim was nervous as he set the craft down. He was aligned with the beacon and his instruments SAID there was a runway there, but his eyes told him that he was about to land a plane on a sheet of featureless snow. The wind from the wings threw up a giant snowstorm as the plane plowed across the field and came to a stop. For a moment Jim wondered if they had landed at the wrong place. The only structure visible was a dome-covered cylinder approximately 40 meters in diameter and 20 meters tall at the peak. A community of 500 people could not live in one large “hut” … could they?

The Chronograph in the Cockpit told Jim that LOCAL time was 1 hour earlier than Brulantfort Time … so it was 8:50 PM local time. A comm from Air Traffic Control wanted to know if you would be entering ARCTIC HAMLET X-2 tonight or remaining in your ship until morning?

Through the synthetic vision of the cockpit window, Jim could see the “Northern Lights” dancing across the sky in invisible wavelengths. It was beautiful.
Back in the cabin, Mick popped the door and stared across the falling snow (stirred up by your landing and the wind) at a round, squat concrete silo with double doors 6 meters tall and wide set in an otherwise utilitarian wall. It was the only structure as far as the eye could see … except for a small pylon topped with a navigation beacon. The Temperature was about -10C with a Moderate Breeze (24 kph) whipping the snow around and making it hard to see even the light above the door on the Silo. Snow drifts across the tarmac varied from knee to waist deep between the ship and the building.

Viewing the path is better done in the daylight ... in any event, it will wait until after you take off FROM X2.
You should let someone else fly if you want to spend time with Olivia.

Mick peers into the low visibility and blowing snow conditions. He’s feeling a bit apprehensive standing in the doorway atop the air stairs. That Body Pressure Suit squeezes in uncomfortable positions until pressure is provided. Now there’s a very slight stir of the air in the sensitive nether regions. DJ said it would take a little getting used to. Amazed at not being chilled dressed just in his boots, jeans, tropical safari shirt, and expedition vest (made of high quality cloth armor material and arrayed with shotgun shells on the chest loops and pockets containing rifle bullets); he decides to leave the clear inflatable hood laying back behind his head…preferring to wear his Light Intensifying Goggles on his face. The breeze is cold on his exposed face and head, but otherwise he’s surprisingly comfortable!

Holding his hat in one hand, he walks down the few steps of air stair. On ground and waiting for the others, he shifts his rifle (Matilda’s) sling and checks “Shorty” (his short barrel led shotgun on his thigh) and strides toward the structure’s doorway leaning a bit into the wind. (Assuming the red-shirts stay with the jet?).

He reaches up to the door actuator. If it opens he’ll stride on in. If not, he’ll ring the doorbell and knock.

Viewing the path is better done in the daylight ... in any event, it will wait until after you take off FROM X2.
You should let someone else fly if you want to spend time with Olivia.
It was more a chat, to see if she wanted to. They have some time on the ride up, but if it's too much, he'll wait. Keeping the conversation as a secondary activity would help her talk, hence doing it while piloting.

DJ

DJ also decides not to wear the hood, and opts for a blue woolen beanie to compliment his BPS, jeans, shirt and coat. He carries his pistol on his hip, but leaves his shotgun on the plane.

He follows Mick, looking around. "Not quite what I was expecting, but I guess a single building reduces heat loss."

10 PM Arctic Hamlet X-2 [9 PM local time]

Mick, DJ (and whomever else desires) approached the oversized doors, slogging your way through the wind and snow. It was easier for the people following in the wake of Mick as he “plowed” a path. The doors parted as you approached within 3 meters to reveal a giant metal box open on the ends. One open end was the double doors to the outside (through which you entered) and the opposite open end was a glass wall. Once inside, the doors quickly shut and began cycling dry warm air.

You examined what was obviously a “lift” as you dried and the air was decontaminated. Through the window, you observed a 20 meter diameter shaft topped with a glass dome, lined with giant cubby holes formed by a grid of vertical piers and horizontal floors, and descending downward. The glass dome contained at least three layers with a middle layer cut into some sort of “fresnel lens” that directed light down the shaft. Into each cubby-hole was inserted a log-cabin home. The lift itself was constructed of some dense metal … probably Crystaliron like a starship hull … and large enough to hold a vehicle or shipping container. Probably even a vehicle with a shipping container.

The lift descended, allowing the group to observe 12 levels of two-story log homes lining the light shaft …50 to 100 homes depending on how they were partitioned, before coming to a stop in a large park (about 50 meters across) with trees growing in the center. Surrounding the park was a ring of two-story commercial buildings. The light well in the center of the park was presently dark, but a vast glowing dome illuminated the surrounding community in a diffused glow.

The LIFT opened to a single lane street that disappeared into a tunnel in the distance, while a grid of park-like pedestrian paths reached out through the commercial district and into terraced Log Cabins climbing the floor of the bowl-shaped cave to reach the illuminated dome. There were a few people walking about the Commercial Area, congregating at a local Restaurant with seating that transitioned from private indoor, to covered patio to open deck to secluded tables in the garden with no walls, doors or windows to clearly separate one from another.

Most of the residential streets seemed quiet and empty.

There was a well lit DATA KIOSK located at the intersection of the path with the park and commercial area. It was a modern Computer Screen, set in Natural Cut Stone with a carved wood “gazebo” marking its location.

"Think outside the box, DJ." says Joe as he steps up beside his friend wearing the vacc suit Mick got him, "In conditions like this, I'd burrow under the ground...just like on a cold and airless world. What we're seeing is probably just the airlock.", he has the helmet on, but the faceplate is pushed up, so he is feeling the cold on his face and eyes, "Damn cold here!"

"This vacc suit is just a hair too big at the midsection, I'm going to have to adjust it once I get a chance." Joe grumbles as he follows Mick down the steps

DJ thinks for a moment then shrugs, "Living undergound, I suppose it ain't no worse than living on a space-ship."

DJ just stands there and gawps for a few seconds before speaking "I take that back, this is far better than living on a spaceship. Where to first? I guess we should get supplies first before any kind of fun."
