Hmmm, interesting. No welcoming committee?

Bart did phone ahead to arrange some vehicle and clothing reservations. Let’s start there…may be the only places open to us at this hour. I bet those shopkeepers can call their other shop owning friends to affect sales after hours.

He steps up to the kiosk and looks for directions to the vehicle rental and clothier.

The LIFT opened to a single lane street that disappeared into a tunnel in the distance, while a grid of park-like pedestrian paths reached out through the commercial district and into terraced Log Cabins climbing the floor of the bowl-shaped cave to reach the illuminated dome. There were a few people walking about the Commercial Area, congregating at a local Restaurant with seating that transitioned from private indoor, to covered patio to open deck to secluded tables in the garden with no walls, doors or windows to clearly separate one from another.

Most of the residential streets seemed quiet and empty.

There was a well lit DATA KIOSK located at the intersection of the path with the park and commercial area. It was a modern Computer Screen, set in Natural Cut Stone with a carved wood “gazebo” marking its location.

DJ just stands there and gawps for a few seconds before speaking "I take that back, this is far better than living on a spaceship. Where to first? I guess we should get supplies first before any kind of fun."
Joe watches the surroundings as the lift descends, his grin getting bigger as it goes down, "Bigger than I expected."

When it reaches the "park" at the bottom Joe says, "This is right nice! Better than most Stations I've been through, got space, plants, and air...most important air!"

Jim will stay aboard the craft, and make sure it's ready to go. He'll note how to secure it with Olivia, so the two of them can form a quick reaction force if needed. Now they have time to talk. :)

In his role outfitting the crew for the cold, Mick will focus on the following priorities:
1) Renting the Tracked ATV and loading it on the plane. 2 ATVs if he can get two and load both on the plane
2) Cold weather clothing as a backup to BPSs for everybody (the higher TL the better) (I'm still a bit confused as to whether Herbie made the expedition)
3) Arctic Travel Packs for everybody. The higher TRL the better.
4) Any other purchase requests ( guns, gear, etc.)(speak up now)
5) While conducting the shopping he'll also info shop for: what was VET's relationship with the local communities, expected conditions at the site, info that didn't make it into the news about the VET party and the other reward party, speculation about what happened, what's broken with the relay station, any sense that someone at this station or Oyland were involved, intel on expected animals/creatures, etc. He'd also be interested to know what runs the economy of the community and what it manufactures.

11 PM Arctic Hamlet X-2 [10 PM local time]

#27 Post by atpollard »

11 PM Arctic Hamlet X-2 [10 PM local time]

"This is a story about rats. When humans first set out for the stars, rats accompanied them as stowaways to virtually every world capable of supporting life. Rodents have a fast reproductive cycle, the adaptability of being an omnivore and a natural ability to adapt to new environments. As a result, within a few generations (less than a decade) rats had fully adapted to each new homeworld ecosystem and within a few Human generations (less than a century) natural selection had yielded new species unrecognizable as rats.

Humans share many traits with rats. The residents of 'Achimasahitunanuch' [what the local population calls Arctic Hamlet X-2 in their native language] arrived on this world about the same time as the earliest settlers in the Temperate and Tropical region, however, while Brulantfort and Ville d’Espoir maintained contact with each other and off-world civilizations, the people of the Arctic lived and died and raised families isolated from outside contact for almost a millennium. During that time, natural selection bred a people better adapted to the harsh Arctic conditions with shorter and more muscular bodies able to shrug off injuries that would break the bones of a lesser man [STR, DEX, END = best 2 of 3D6; INT, EDU, SOC = worst 2 of 3D6]. Isolation also resulted in a unique language and social structure/customs distinct from the rest of the planet (and Interstellar Community) and better adapted to collective survival in harsh conditions.

Contact was reestablished with the World Government about 150 years ago and 'THE PEOPLE' have embraced the new language and technology, doing what they have always done … simply incorporating what seems good about the new into the old ways and allowing natural selection to prove what benefits the community."

The Restaurant was far more than a place to eat … it was the center of community life. The COUNCIL sat at the Restaurant and made binding judicial decisions between clansmen that brought their grievance forward. Business transactions were conducted at the restaurant … sealed with a handshake and a shot of some dark drink.

The local spirits proved as interesting as the food, the people and the culture. The dominant beverage was a dark brown beer with a distinctive aroma … not bad, sort of earthy and spicy … however, definitely not fermented from any grain (or at least any grain you were familiar with) and having an alcohol content closer to a strong wine than a ‘beer’ as you knew the term. However, a business agreement was sealed with a shot of a spirit equally brown, but smelling more like “aviation fuel”. From the bite, the concept of aging in a charred cask to mellow was foreign to these people. Mick was the first to discover that declining the shot was equivalent to declining the offer and abruptly ended all further discussion … knowledge gained at the cost of a 12mm Rifle with a folding stock and a scope … but knowledge quickly passed on to the rest of the group.

The food included noodles and starchy tubers in plentiful quantities, but was overwhelmingly dominated by MEAT and CHEESE and YOGURT products. The sight and smell of a half-kilo slab of meat slow grilled to perfection and tender enough to cut with a fork made mouths start to water.

Your Tracked vehicle was ready, but “Sam” [that wasn’t his real name, you couldn’t pronounce all of the consonants in his real name, so you just called him Sam in your mind] was in no hurry to get it. He couldn’t understand why anyone would want to leave HOME in the middle of the night when travel would be so much easier at first light.

An observation on Local Weapons … these people preferred BIG RIFLES and Arctic Hamlet X2 was definitely not Law Level 7. Almost every male carried a Rifle or Shotgun. Most were in some sort of animal skin back sheath or hung from wall pegs near their table like an umbrella or hat. Soon you realized that the weapons were less about protection and more about status. Each gun was decorated - some quite brightly - to reflect their owner. Conversation revealed that owning a rifle was a sign that a boy had become a man and survived a hunt to take a prize. Each gun told a story … the story of its owner … the story of a man … the story of a Hunter. “Pistols are for those too old to hunt or those that were never hunters” was a local saying. THE PEOPLE do not use pistols like the OUTSIDERS do.

An observation about local weapons was that people who built Homes out of logs and stone, did not use wood or metal in their guns. The Barrels were advanced Composites and the stocks were all synthetic. At first you wondered if it was some ‘taboo’ against metal. Eventually you realized, it was 100% pragmatic … the advanced materials were resistant to embrittlement in extreme cold or freeze-thaw failure. It was also safer to “touch” than a super-cold metal (which would freeze to your skin). That same pragmatism eliminated “automatic” weapons in favor of mechanical actions like Revolvers and Bolt Actions. Both were also better suited to the higher energy of the larger calibers favored by the locals.

Readily available Weapons (rejected by locals and stocked for visitors and children learning to shoot) included:
  • 9mm Revolver [Cr 150, 0.9 kg, 3D6]
  • 7mm Bolt-Action Rifle [Cr 200, 4.0 kg, 3D6]
  • 18mm Pump Shotgun [Cr 150, 4.0 kg, 4D6]

Early interactions with locals turned up several opportunities to purchase better “LOCAL” weapons:
  • Joe and Mick each had an opportunity to purchase a 12mm Revolver [Cr 600, 2.0 kg, 4D6]
  • DJ and Mick each had an opportunity to purchase a 9mm Bolt-Action Rifle [Cr 1000, 5.0 kg, 3D6+1]

DJ

DJ is fascinated by both the underground settlement and the culture of those that live there. Being a little out-of-his depth he sticks to a friendly demeanour and does his best to take his cues from Mick.

When the opportunity comes up to buy the 9mm rifle he takes it, he also tries to find some ammo for his snub service pistol.

Subject to change based on other PC preferrences

Mick weighs time vs quality of the weapons. He’s a junky for quality gear, and in this case- the bigger the gun the better for him. But he doesn’t want to delay the expedition any more than necessary.

Mick will want to specialize the two 9mm rifles (scopes if possible. And he’d ask Joe or DJ to go buy the 12mm rifle. And take the shot…the liquid shot. It’s a business necessity! Don’t say “no”. Y’hear?.” Mick wants the 12mm and assumes Olivio would want one of the 9mm. Do any come with special cold scopes?[/ooc]

He’ll buy shotguns for anyone else who wants one.

Mick will also buy a 12mm revolver (he wants 7 revolvers total for the party). He’ll fill out the remainder with whatever type PCs want.

He’ll show his “Shorty” sawed-off and ask if they make the equivalent. If so, he’ll get one.

If any PCs want something else or more, I’ll flex to that action.

If he sees any composite daggers (stealth daggers), Mick buys one for himself.

Joe will certainly buy the locally produced pistol and the shotgun, he's good with those in particular. At Mick's insistence he'll also buy a rifle, but he's more comfortable with a shotgun.

Dude, ya want a shotgun, we’ll get a shotgun.

Keep in mind, atpollard already determined that weapons quals do not folllow LBB rules. He divides slug weapons into Long Guns and Sidearms. (I kinda like that determination based on Real life experience with firearms). Just FYI.

Herbie (retcon)

Herbie does love his toys and goes for the high end adventure pack, vacc suit and 24 hr kit and the rifle Mick procured. He carries 8 magazines army style in web pouches and an extra bandolier of reloads in the pack along with cleaning gear. If a bayonet for the rifle is available he'll buy it and wear it at his belt.

If there is "better" cold equipment available locally (i.e. gear that doesn't leave Herbie with a 0 dexterity) he'll buy the warmest, lightest stuff they offer. And a headlamp! Love those things.

I'm not sure if Val funded the expedition with her 100K and we repay (if we live) or if we're on our own for equip. purchase?

I assumed that we were only offered one of the 'specials' each, but DJ was picking 'his' for someone else to use, so no worries there. Thinking about it, it makes sense for him to have a shotgun too.

Gosh I almost forgot! Herbie scours high and low for the best team medical kit they can find (and afford) along with extra bandages, tourniquets, antibiotics etc. He’ll hump the extra gear happily even if someone else is a better medic, but if not he’s happy to serve. He had a lot of practice in basic. :D

Jim and Olivia remained aboard the plane. James spoke with her about “ursoids” and service. She was unwilling to talk about what she had done or experienced in combat, but the two of you did bond over being “shafted” by the brass and discarded when it was expedient to do so.

Jim discovered that Olivia never attended OCS, but was promoted in the field seeing nothing BUT combat for her two terms until she was sidelined by a ‘million dollar bullet’ and spent a long time in rehab. Rehab was where she learned to fix things with her hands instead of her rifle.

Olivia absently disassembled and reassembled her LAG without actually looking at it. From where Jim stood, it appeared as almost a Zen-like meditation ritual for her. Pure muscle memory at this point.
Olivia reaction roll = [9] … friendly
Olivia talks about PTSD roll = [3] … not interested.

12 AM Arctic Hamlet X-2 [11 PM local time]

12 AM Arctic Hamlet X-2 [11 PM local time]

Within the cave lay a community of 500 people. The PEOPLE had originally lived a nomadic lifestyle, but never one of random wandering. They simply had “seasonal” homes and traveled from one homestead to another. In the summer, they lived in tents tracking and hunting hers in the far north. In the winter, they journeyed south to earth-covered lodges in the Boreal Forests. In between, they would visit open areas to plant gardens in the spring and harvest them on their fall return to the winter shelters. Adapting everything they knew to their new “cave” settlement, they accepted the reinforced concrete structures to replace the timber of their simpler earth dwellings, but they CHOSE to maintain most of their old ways. The transported Boreal Logs 1000 km to build underground homes with the warmth of living wood rather than cold stone. They combined that with hide tents like their summer dwellings and they planted the “streets” like their spring and fall gardens. Although the “migrations” had ended, the cycles of the seasons continued to regulate the lives of THE PEOPLE as they had for a thousand years. Time was measured in hunts and harvests, not hours.

Structures built by THE PEOPLE using their aesthetic included:
  • Electric Company
  • Natural Gas Company
  • Construction Company
  • Grocery Store
  • General Merchandise
  • Clothing Store (incl. Shoes, Jewelry & Leather)
  • Motor Vehicle Dealer
  • Hardware Store
  • Warehouse
  • 6 Offices
  • Restaurant - community center
Structures built by the Planetary Government using “Ville d'Espoir” Architecture included:
  • Factory
  • Air Traffic Control / Elevator
  • Health Clinic & Social Services
By the time Joe convinced ‘Sam’ that you really needed your Tracked Transport NOW rather than in the morning … Joe and Sam seemed to get along the best … further interactions with locals turned up several opportunities to purchase additional “LOCAL” weapons:
  • Herbie and DJ each had an opportunity to purchase a 9mm Magnum Revolver [Cr 300, 1.2 kg, 3D6+1]
  • DJ had an opportunity to purchase a 12mm Bolt-Action Rifle [Cr 2000, 6.0 kg, 4D6]
  • Mick had an opportunity to purchase a 9mm Bolt-Action Rifle with a folding stock and Telescopic Sights (+4 at Long Range) [Cr 1300, 6.3 kg, 3D6+1]
You have purchased Waterproof Cold Weather Clothing [Cr 800, 2 kg, TL 10] or Standard Cold Weather Clothing [Cr 300, 4 kg, TL 6, -1 DEX] as desired and the 4 dT Tracked Vehicle [Cr 20,000; 8,000 kg; seats 4 + 1 tonne of cargo] is loaded aboard the plane (rent = Cr 100/day).

Joe and DJ happened upon the Hardware Store and the discovery that a Hardware Store struggled to make ends meet in such a small community. What might have seemed sad, actually opened the door to an unusual opportunity. With all the equipment needed to run a hardware store, and all of the general supplies and connections to outside vendors, and with nothing but time on his hands, “Bill” (also not his unpronounceable name but what you called him in your mind) had set up a small shop in the back of his store where he “tinkered a bit”. That was his description. When Joe and DJ went to see “Bill’s” tinkering, you discovered the more common name for such tinkering is “gunsmith”. If you are willing to delay your departure for 1 hour, Joe and DJ each have one of the following …

12mm Bolt-Action Rifle with a folding stock and Telescopic Sights (+4 at Long Range) [Cr 2300, 7.3 kg, 4D6]

DJ also can get 20 rounds of hand-loaded ammo for his snub pistol … ball [2D6], shotgun [3D6], HE [4D6], HEAP [4D6]

Mick got to talking knives with a patron at the bar. The two of you shared stories, tips and brags about the fine points of skinning. Most of the patrons moved away … they were trying to eat and those graphic details were not setting the right mood. When Mick hinted that he was looking for a non-metalic blade, your new friend dragged a fat old man out a corner table to open the General Store. For a moment, Mick died and went to heaven … there was a display dedicated to knives… pocket, skinning, carving, hunting, combat … even a friggin Marine cutlass. Every single one made of composite ceramic with a bone handle. As Mick selected his knife, a book was dropped in front of him and flipped open. Mick had to choose the design he wanted carved into the handle. There were hundreds to choose from.

Apparently, a knife is not just a knife … It is a deeply personal thing. Like part of your soul.

… It will take 1 hour to complete the modifications and load the ammo.

Liftoff is delayed until 1 AM /12 AM Local time).

As for clothing, I've said Joe is wearing the highest TL vacc suit he could get. If he can't get a vacc suit, he'll be wearing Winter Clothing.
