[002] A Temple and a Tomb

#1 Post by Eris »

The golden doors open inward, smoothly, with no sound.

It is dimly lighted inside with just the light from the open doorway showing a rectangular room extending left and right into deep shadow and forward another ten to fifteen feet to another set of double doors...closed. The floor appears to be tiled with a pattern of black and while tiles and looking up you see the ceiling also appears tiled, but only with white. The walls, as best you can make out are of a smooth stone, marble perhaps.

This room is empty except for a pair of chairs situated to either side of the inner double doors. The chairs are large and ornate and also empty.

Words are carved into the lintel above the inner doors, but it is too dark in here to read them.

Ulfgar

Ulfgar will light his 1 torch. Then he moves over and takes a look at the writing if nothing else catches his eye first.

Upon seeing Ulfgar reach for a torch, he says

"I have a lantern, we can use that first if you want."

Okay, lantern lighted... approximately one hour on a small bottle of oil. That's 10 rounds at 6 minutes per round. How many bottles does Wendel have in his gear slots?

Crawling Turn 1 (Lantern light)

Wendel's lantern lights, and the entire room brightens. You can see into all four corners now. You see one empty chair in each of the four corners of this room and two flanking the closed wooden doors centered in the northern wall. Otherwise the room is empty. Consider this entire room to be Near.

Once all of you have filed into the room, the outer doors close behind you, silently, except for a click as they completely shut.

Wendel

As Ulfgar starts to move, Wendel speaks.

"Wait, this is a temple to the god of magic. Let me check first."

He passes his right hand horizontally across his eyes left-to-right, palm outward and fingers wiggling, while enunciating "Revelare Retinae"

Crawling Turn 1 (Lantern light1/10)

Only shaidar and Rex have posted. Are we losing people?

Ulfgar starts toward the closed wooden doors, but Wendel's voice causes him to pause to see what happens.

Wendel speaks "Revelare Retinae", detect magic, and everyone sees a glimmer fill the room as he does so.

All of you see spectral figures appear seated in the six chairs in the room. One in each corner and two seated beside the closed doors. Each of the figures is wearing what looks like mail armor and a sword is resting across their knees. The spectral figures seem oblivious to you, just sitting there...

There doesn't appear to be any other magic in this room.

From where Ulfgar is standing, waiting for Wendel to cast the spell, he can still examine the writing above the closed doors. Again there are several versions, including Common, but they all say, "Beloved of Ord, enter. All else enter at your mortal peril!"

End of Turn 1

Beloved of Ord... Should we be wearing some holy symbol? Or maybe some sign of fealty?

Without entering the room (unless everyone else has), he begins examining the immediate floor tiles looking to see if the checkerboard pattern might conceal any pressure plates or pit traps.

Naugrim ponders the six spectral figures, looking particularly at their arms, armor, heraldry and the age of the styles to see what he knows from tales of them, the era of their belongings, or the tomb...

Willow waves to the spectres, only then satisfied that they're unreactive. She fishes through her pouches and crushes a dried red flower before mixing it into a small cup of water from her skin. She offers it first to Ulfgar, who is taking the lead. "Here... this will help you be more alert. We don't want to be surprised down here..."

(If he doesn't drink it, she shrugs and drinks it herself.)

"Thanks Willow."
He drinks down the tisane. "It doesn't taste very good, I hope it works."

Wendel focusses his mind on keeping his spell running while Orram starts checking the room is safe, he looks for signs of any reaction in the spectral figures.

The spectral figures aren't reacting at all...however, no one has tried to open the inner doors, nor have they touched the specters yet.

They look like elves or half-elves to you, but you can't be sure as their features are indistinct. They are holding longswords across their knees. They are wearing what looks like chainmail with a tunic over it. On the tunic is an image of what looks like a shield with a lion rampant...their image is too ghostly to determine the color of the lion as everything about them is in shades of gray. You can't determine the age or period, because you are new to *this* continent know nothing of the history here.
OOC: All of you are new here, so you don't know the background stories of anything yet.

Everyone has entered.

You are all in an antechamber between the outer doors and a set of inner doors. The ghostly figures are seated in this antechamber. You examine the checkerboard pattern, they look like tiles. There are no pressure plates or traps here, as far as you can see.

You haven't gotten to the closed inner doors yet, as you've been checking out the antechamber first...

You have searched around in the antechamber and discovered no traps or pitfalls. The specters have remained seated seemingly ignorant of your very presence all this time. The writing above the inner doors has been read, beckoning Disciples of Ord and warning off all others. You haven't touched the specters or the inner doors yet. You know the outer doors have closed behind you, but you don't know if they have locked on you, but you did hear a 'click' when they shut.

What do you do now?

"Time to act I think. How about I try to open the inner door and we see what happens? I suspect those specters are going to act, but who knows."
