HOUSE OF CARDS - PART 1: [Joe Black & Jim Daniels]

#1 Post by atpollard »

HOUSE OF CARDS - PART 1: [Joe Black]
10 AM District 0, Building 12 Bar & Diner [12]
The group had decided to split up and cover more ground in a ‘recon’ mission to get a better feel for ‘The Colony’ and what sort of opportunities BEAU might offer. The number one goal was to find a way to generate some fast cash so the newly formed collective could have some operating cash independent of the individual members’ pockets.

Joe Black stepped outside of “Building 12”, thinking again that it was a stupid thing to put on a sign. Standing on the dirt road outside the bar, Joe took a moment to really look at the building. His first impression was that a Shipping Container and a Shuttle Craft had mated and given birth to THIS … a 9-meter by 15-meter metal box with rounded corners and edges. It wasn’t even sitting on the ground; Joe could see a dark gap around the base hidden by giant plants. Joe could almost picture a Starship’s Cutter gently lowering the prefabricated building into place and then flying off. “Guess that’s one way to make a shell airtight”, he thought to himself.

Then Joe stared out across the Square, a vast open grassy tract in the center of the Colony. Scanning the Square, most of the buildings around it appeared commercial … but not all. There were residential structures scattered around in clusters. Different sizes and styles, but clustered together by size and type. It would seem that even their rebellion was semi-ordered.

His attention was next drawn to the road he was standing on. Not concrete, but not soft like a normal dirt road, either. Joe scuffed it with his boot. More like ceramic than anything else. Like a giant ceramic ribbon … who knows how thick, but at least half a meter, with random cracks provided by time and nature. The road in front of the Bar was wide enough for two vehicles and looped the square.

“Left or right.” Joe needed to choose a direction. To his right was a Wholesale Food and Grocery [23] while the building to his left had a Grav-Pickup parked next to it … so Joe chose LEFT. The Grav Truck belonged to a company that specialized in the Construction and Repair of Air Conditioning and Filtration Systems [19]. Passing the side street, Joe caught a glimpse of a Factory [15] … which, besides being large, was also a reinforced masonry structure rather than any sort of modular metal box, like most buildings in The Colony.

The sounds of wildlife and cursing drew Joe’s attention away from the factory and further to the left.

11 AM Pressure Tent near [19]
Joe located the animals before the cursing … ultimately, the two were unrelated. In a partially wooded area next to the HVAC Contractors, was a fenced clearing with a Horned Grazer about 30 kg in size. Upon closer examination, the pen contained several other animals … each member of this menagerie was a single individual of a different species. Joe was not much of a ‘Farmer’, but even he knew that was not how breeding livestock works. Near the pen was a Pressure Tent. From the pattern, you suspected Army Issue ballistic cloth. From the vast number of patches, you suspect both Military Surplus and OLD military surplus. The campsite surrounding the Tent was completely ‘Military Regulation’ order … from the stones surrounding the fire pit, to the alignment of the folding chairs, to the way the wood was stacked. On the opposite side of the Tent from the Animals was a garden … a substantial garden at that. Not the sort of garden that one does for a hobby, but the sort of garden that one feeds themselves from.

Short blonde hair, green eyes and a burn scar on the side of her face that disappeared down the collar of her military issue coverall … Olivia emerged from the tent holding a partially disassembled diesel injection assembly in one hand and needle-nose pliers in the other. A blade that from your vantage point looked like half-way between a knife and a machete, hung from her belt and did not escape your notice.
Olivia (Age 24): Below average (2-5) STR, SOC; Average (6-8) DEX, INT, EDU; Above average (9-A) END.
[NOTE: This is a pause mid-search to offer each character a chance to privately interact during the 4 hour mission and potentially gain allies, enemies, contacts or rumors beyond the main “reveal” of the quest … which happens in PART 2, when I apply the final result of your OOC skill roll.]

"Morning there!" Joe says with a smile and a nod, "I was drawn over here by your menagerie, looks like one each of a bunch of species that I'm not familiar with."

"I was also wondering which one was cursing a blue streak." Joe adds with a grin.

"I'm Joe Black, by the way. New here, just off the Transport, and looking around." Joe says, "I'd offer to shake hands, but it looks like you've got your hands full. I don't suppose you need any help with that fuel injector do you? I'm a fair mechanic, if I say so myself."

11:30 AM Pressure Tent near [19]

Olivia gave an almost smile at Joe’s humor and easy-going way, but just grunted and nodded over her shoulder in the general direction of [25] at the question about cursing with a one word reply … "Truckers." After a pause, she added " Good ‘nuff sorts. Never saw a problem that cussin’ at would make better, myself. Better to roll up your sleeves and attack it head on. Jus’ suck it up an’ deal with it."

She responded skeptically to Joe’s offer to help with the Fuel Injector, but invited him to "Take a load off" . Sitting in front of the Tent, Joe learned her name was Olivia - she only went by one name and “Olivia” was actually her last name. The two of you grew more comfortable talking “shop” over your common MECHANICAL interest. Joe learned that Olivia had enlisted in the Army straight out of school and served as an Infantry Officer. She hated the Ursoids - giant, hairy warrior aliens from the ‘Shogunate’ worlds that she fought against - and was wounded in combat and given the boot by the Army. She picked up some skill fixing things in REHAB and doesn’t really feel comfortable in cities or crowds. She is just ‘squatting’ here while she figures things out … she has been here for three years.

After struggling with the part for a while, Olivia seemed more willing to accept help. Joe recognized by this point that his skill was no better than hers, but Joe had an ace up his sleeve … Joe had been around and knew some ways of ‘dealing with it’ - to quote Olivia - that was not written in any books. Just some off-the- wall tricks that Joe had picked up along the way. He had an idea and she was finally willing to allow Joe to “help”. Joe tried a trick he had seen once used for a completely different problem on a completely different part … but there was enough parallel to give it a shot. [JOT] It worked!

Equal parts delighted and impressed, Olivia invited Joe into the Tent for a celebratory toast. Joe stood for a moment in the outer vestibule and noted the chair and sink. This space was more open (transparent) and served double duty as an airlock between the contaminated “outside” and the filtered “inside”. Joe and Olivia removed their filters after a moment and proceed into the inner chamber.
"Watch yer head." she cautioned as Joe ducked into the tent. He obliged and noted the Tactical Shotgun mounted over the door for quick access. The tent contained a bed, a small cooking stove, an air filtration unit, one large vertical storage locker and multiple storage crates. Everything seemed to be perfectly in place and ready for inspection. She invited Joe to take the chair as she retrieved two glasses from the crate next to it. As the crate was open, Joe observed no fewer than 5 handguns attached to the inside of the lid and multiple boxes of ammo inside the chest. The bottle was recovered from the back of the tall locker - which housed multiple rifles … one large enough in caliber that Joe was not sure it still qualified as a “rifle” [20mm Light Assault Gun (LAG)]. Joe also caught a glimpse of her old service uniform … Olivia was Lieutenant Olivia and had ribbons on her dress uniform. Unfortunately, the details of “Army Salad” were lost on an old Merchant Spacer like Joe, but he knew that each meant SOMETHING and none meant nothing.

[OOC: If Joe has any desire to pursue it, he can obtain a firearm and/or ammo from Olivia. She has spares, contacts and earns money on the black market buying, selling and repairing them.]

12 Noon Warehouse #25 [25]

Joe eventually departed Olivia’s and followed the profanity to a large warehouse with the unimpressive title of “Warehouse #25”. Joe knew that was name because the structure was a gray cube of Crystaliron 18 meters on a side with a reinforcing pattern stamped into it … like a ginormous shipping container … with the words “WAREHOUSE #25” stenciled on the side in 3-meter tall block letters. Most of the activity (and profanity) seemed to center on a small 3-meter by 6-meter shipping container located near the warehouse. The door cut into the side of the container, the glass that had replaced the double doors at the end, and the three metal steps leading up to the door identified the otherwise “typical” cargo container as repurposed into an “office”. Joe knew it was an office because - like the warehouse - it was brilliantly stenciled with “OFFICE” in matching block letters (only 1-meter high). Unlike the uniform gray of the warehouse, the office was still painted with the multiple colors of the original owner except for a patch of gray where the old lettering had been covered over.

Never one to miss a good fight, Joe ambled over to the crowd that sounded like it was heading towards a fight. After listening to the shouting and cursing for a short while, Joe learns that Nadia Rossi has gone into labor with her third child. As a result, her husband, Nick Rossi unexpectedly took off work to be with her.

Joe had to admit that this struck him as an unusual reason to riot … but “to each his own” Joe thought. It also failed to explain why a group of truckers were screaming at a skinny (but quick on his feet) pencil pusher that worked in a shipping container.

The situation became somewhat clearer when Joe learned that all of these angry, shouting, swearing individuals were PRIVATE truckers - and not just any private truckers … they were private truckers with EMPTY trucks waiting to be loaded. No load - no work - no payday. Things really came into focus when Joe discovered that Nick loaded the trucks. So no Nick means no trucks get loaded today and nobody earns any pay. These are not people that can afford to skip paydays.

The issue turned out to be … BATTLEDRESS! To be more specific, the Powered Exoskeleton that was the Civilian equivalent of Military Battledress Powered Armor. To be even more specific, the Powered Exoskeleton that served as the “forklift” and “crane” to load 6-meter long shipping containers with 4 dTons (16 metric tonnes) of cargo onto the bed of a waiting transport - which Nick was the only person in the Warehouse qualified to operate, and which these truckers desperately needed.

Joe knew how to operate a Powered Exoskeleton. With Vacc Suit-1, a person is trained in all types of spacesuits. A Marine would probably have time in actual Battle Dress, but for most it is just “theoretical” knowledge. At Vacc Suit-2, a Spacer will have had actual hands-on experience in a Powered Exoskeleton either at a Shipyard or on a giant merchant ship making repairs in deep space. After 6 terms as a Spacer, Joe had the certification to operate the Powered Exoskeleton. The question was … does he want to get in the middle of this and what happens in two hours when Joe needs to leave?

"Good making your acquaintance, Olivia. If you're ever in that bar over that way I'll buy you a drink or two." Joe waves toward the bar that he started out from.

Joe stands and starts to leave, then stops and asks, "Do you ever contract out for jobs that might make use of your obvious talents. Using that big LAG you've got over there, for example? If you do we might want to talk a bit more later as a job opportunity has come up and I think we could use your help with it."

"What's it worth to you?" Joe looks first at Yang and then looks and grins at the truckers, "Highest TIP offered gets loaded first."

HOUSE OF CARDS - PART 1: [James Michael Daniels]

#5 Post by atpollard »

12 Noon Dame Schmidt Residence [E near #25]

James lay under the Grav Vehicle attempting to repair it. It was a straight-forward repair. It should be easy. Yet here he struggled “almost” getting it. He lay a moment, listening to the shouts and profanity from the truckers at the warehouse a short distance away. Inside, he agreed completely with every word.

James had been on Beau for three days, and in 'The Colony' for two days. Dame Schmidt had graciously invited him to stay as a guest in her home.

HOME was actually an interesting term for it. Like most of the aristocrats that chose to live in The Colony - James was shocked that so many people of station would choose to congregate in so ‘ODD’ a community - she had purchased a land plot, installed a perimeter fence/wall to define her “estate” and had a two-level, 4-meter diameter, 30-meter long ‘Cutter Module’ delivered to the site to serve as her home. Of course, the grounds were lavishly landscaped and the interior was luxuriously appointed and finished … but the woman was a Knight living in a glorified ‘mobile home’. The Colony bred an odd crowd.

Noblesse oblige. Dame Schmidt had graciously entertained James as her guest because that was simply what one member of your social circle did for another member newly arrived in town. James had wanted to repair the Grav Car as a ‘Thank You’ gift in reciprocation. He was also aware of the truism ‘Fish and visitors start to stink after three days’ and it was approaching time for James to locate more independent accommodations.

[clank] The part he was struggling to reinstall fell to the ground. James withheld a strong desire to join the truckers in shouting profanity. The task was simple enough at this point, but it was inescapably a two-person job. However talented James might be, he could not be both above and below the vehicle at the same time. With a heavy sigh he decided that it was time for a break.

The noise from the Warehouse [25] again drew his attention. Frequent shouting was common - they were a passionate group, it seemed - but today, the shouting seemed more protracted and intense than usual. James wondered what was going on, and if a trucker might have a pair of hands to lend …

Below average (2-5) STR; Average (6-8) DEX, END; Above average (9-C) INT, EDU, SOC

Vehicle (water): Roll [11] +1 = 12 [roll for “beating the bushes cash” … I like a challenge.]
Engineering/Grav: Roll [6] +1 = 7 (because you asked … like I said, I like a creative challenge)
[NOTE: This is a pause to offer the character a chance to interact and either merge with Another Character's Search or provide input to create a direction for your own. James still needs the connection to drive the LOGIC of how he ends up part of the group, so I wait on that before herding him in a direction other than the "nearest" character.]

"Time is money, Gents!" Joe says looking around, "My time is limited, as I said, but I'm willing to trade what I've got for some money."

He steps over to the powered exoskeleton and looks it over, "Yeah, I've used this very model loading and unloading from ships and a few times making repairs in the deep. Used one not too long ago, actually, this shouldn't be a problem."

"You interested in some help?"
Joe looks at the Foreman.

James Michael Daniels

Jim muttered under his breath, picked up the coolant compressor, and crawled out from under the grav vehicle.

Sophie looked up at him, it was past lunch. Her tummy rumbled slightly, but the past couple of days had been good eating. She still had to stay outside, but the new man seemed to like her. He spoke nicely, and scritched behind her ears frequently.

Jim dusted off the part, set it on a cloth so it stayed clean, and went to the door of Dame Schmidt's "villa". He wiped most of the grease off his hands, realized it wasn't all going to come off, and used a cleaner rag to open the door. "M'Lady, I need to run out for a moment and find another pair of hands. The work is almost done, but getting the compressor in place needs two people. I'll be back shortly."

He actually liked the area, it was as eclectic and pseudo-homey as some of his spacers had talked about. The nobility being here was odd, but it worked for him. Not his place to judge anyone on that.

Jim made his way to the uproar, with Sophie dutifully following. One of the truckers explained what was going on, and Jim saw a Spacer who knew his stuff and the exoskeleton. The Foreman, however, looked intimidated into paralysis by the irate truckers.

Jim understood merchanting at a basic level. No work meaning no pay was a maxim his family lived by, and they had had their share of union issues and labor conflicts. Father usually threw a small amount of money at the problem, if it went away, great. If not, there were always bodyguards willing to do some side work, broken legs were contagious for a while.

Having neither money nor a desire to break any legs, Jim fell back to the command presence prep school and the Navy had drilled into him. He began walking to the Foreman and commanded, "Quiet on deck!"

Jim gently took the loading comp from the Foreman, studied it for a moment, and looked at the Spacer. "If you can run that thing, I can coordinate the loading sequence to make it easier for you. Sound good?"

If the plan went forward, Jim clambered up on top of the crates and began identifying which ones went to which trucks. He tossed the lease down to the Foreman, and said "Take care of her."

Joe turns at the command voice and cocks his this man looked familiar, but he could not place him.

Joe nods, "Suits me, but I need an answer about pay before I go forward. Two hours standard rate. Need the foreman to say Yay or Nay."

Joe is still trying to place the newcomer...Navy, he thinks. Got to be an officer, but he sure ain't dressed like one. Joe's run across a lot of Naval officers, most are more officious than they needed to be. Think about it later, consentrate on earning a little cash here.

Jim nodded to Joe, and grinned. He turned to the Foreman and said clearly enough that the truckers could hear. "This man asks for fair wages for an emergency job. The usual rate for priority service specialty skilled contract labor is twice standard wages, minimum of four hours. He only has two hours, if I understand correctly." Pointing at the truckers, he added. "Now, I'm sure you can resolve this easily enough with the slush fund all offices keep. If you did everything by the books and on-line, you'd be in the city, wouldn't you?"

One of the truckers was noticeably larger and more emphatic than the others, Jim pointed at her. "Ma'am, would you assist the Foreman in gathering this man's wages while we work?"

If the foreman complies.

Jim turned back to Joe, and held out his almost non-greasy hand. "Oh, sorry. I'm trying to fix a grav carrier." He lowered his hand and added, "I'm Jim."

I don't mind grease, but I'd better not get this guy's Exo dirty, so forgive me if I just bump fists with you."
Joe says back and performs a fist bump, and then adds, "My name's Joe, Joe Black. You look familiar, but I can't place you, Jim."

"Yeah, I got two hours, less 5 minutes now, then I need to meet up with some folks over in Building 12, the Cafe, to talk over job opportunities." Joe says and if given the go ahead, gets to work.

"Only two types of people know how to run these things, and you don't look crazy enough to be a Marine."
Jim grinned. "I've met a lot of Marines, but my ship time was on numbered hulls and long patrols (1). If you've been near Shogunate space, we've probably been at some supply depot at the same time, or picking up our crews from jail and paying for damages to some local bar."

He lowered his voice slightly, and looked slightly embarassed. Nodding to the dog with him, he said, "My administrative assistant would remind me that looking for work is a high priority. I need about five minutes help to fix a friend's grav carrier as a thank you for letting me stay, and then find some work that will let me stay somewhere else. Let's get this job done, and maybe it'll be my job application, if your crew has opportunities to spare."

He held up the loading comp. "There's a child's game they play in the Shogunate, it consists of a large pile of tiles and you match pairs to remove tiles. It teaches pattern recognition and step by step thinking. This is just an upsized version of that. Should be easy for two spacers to load cargo, right?"

Joe nods, "Shogunate, yeah, I've been there a time or three. Could have run into you there."

"And, no not Marine, Merchant Marine. Just an old Hawsepiper who got stuck behind Academy types with higher Socials." Joe says with a shrug, "The way of the Worlds, I guess. So I took a walk to try making it on my own."

"Five minutes to help a friend, you say? Yeah, okay, that's a deal." Joe turns to the foreman, "You're down to an hour forty five now for two hours pay. Time's money, friend. Time to piss or get off the pot."

Once the work begins, if it ever does, here's hoping Joe and Jim work well together to get the containers loaded/unloaded to/from the waiting trucks.

I did too! :)
I'm trying to come up with a term for "those who advance through privilege and connections", that isn't nepotism. "Shavetail" isn't right, "Golden Climber" is too long, "Nephew" is mono-gender, maybe just "The Favored"...yeah, I think Favored or The Favored Few will do. :) Promoted due to incompetence is obviously "Dilberted."

12:15 PM Warehouse #25 [25] [Joe Black and Jim Daniels]

12:15 PM Warehouse #25 [25] [Joe Black and Jim Daniels]

Bullying Brom proved an exercise in futility. “I’m only the ASSISTANT manager!” he protested as the Trucker joined Joe and Jim in pressing for an agreement to pay the extra fees. “Don’t get me wrong. I am not AGAINST the idea. I just don’t have that sort of authority. It would need to be approved at Corporate Headquarters in Ville d’Espoir. I won’t lie … they will take months to decide and probably say no. Even if they do agree, they will deduct the cash from Nick’s pay and I am not keen on shorting a family that just had a baby.”

“You suggested pulling it from the ‘slush fund.” Brom chuckled and reached into his pocket to withdraw Cr 7. “HERE is the slush fund. The slush fund can offer Cr 1.75 per hour for each of you.”

Twenty-eight year old Brom Yang became dead serious. “I don’t really know you two …” he said to Jim and James and gestured at the crowd with a broad sweep of his hand “... but THEY know me. Folks that know me know that I take care of my own and I make good on my debts. If you two can REALLY help this situation … and more to the point … help my Truckers, Brom will remember and Brom will take care of you. It might not be cash, money … but it will be worth a lot more than you could ever have earned for your time.”

“You have my word … ” Brom stuck out his hand “... do we have a deal?”

Jim looked at the trucker who joined them to see if they backed up Brom's statement. If so, he gave Joe an "it's your call" look.
