Skills are just something you are very, very good at. Skill 1 is enough to get a paying job...

Gabe served a term in the Imperial Marines and lived to tell about it. He can likely do anything you'd expect a fully trained Marine to be able to do without needing a specific skill or making any rolls in order to do so.
Probe a mine field, conduct a reconnaissance, set an ambush, call for fire support, perform basic first aid, interrogate a prisoner, shine the hell out of some boots, etc...

Just announce what you're doing (based on your background, characteristics, skills or whatever) and assume you're capable of doing it. If you're not I'll let you know. I always assume character competence.
I agree with all the above :) But like to point out that within a year of the LBB's being published, Marc Miller himself (perhaps with some goading by Chadwick) began to depart from the OG model, with Books 4 & 5 adding more specific skills like Comms, Recon, Instruction, and Liaison. In the original game, any ex-Military character would be assumed to know how to do the first two, and any officer or non-com all four. As you point out, Gabe can operate a field radio or perform a basic recce, but he might be a bit wobbly giving a class or command briefing as those are in the officers' realm.

What I do like is that all his current skills have some crunchy benefit outside of the task resolution system. Eg. Tactics gives the whole party an initiative bonus, and Vacc Suit would let Gabe suit up in Combat Armour, IF and when he comes across it :)

And on that note...

Yes and there's also that slight possibility of some "fraternization" among the team. A topic mostly left alone in family-friendly Traveller. ;)

In Traveller games I run I, use the Career as a skill shortcut. Anything the PC could have reasonably been expected to learn about in that career skips the untrained penalty, ie. it becomes Level 0. I'm not strict about it, but generally for every two more terms in a career I give a +1 to that generalized skill as well: Term 1=+0, Term 3=+1, Term 5=+2, etc. I don't think I've ever told my players that I'm doing this, though. :)

edit: That's one reason I never warmed up to all the extra skills Books 4+ (and later versions) started to give the PCs. They were already getting a big benefit from the Career in my games.

So, a three term Navy PC gets a Navy+1 skill that can be applied to anything Navy oriented when they attempt an action. Just what that means is left to the Ref "describe what you're trying to do and we'll see what happens" with the Ref deciding to apply that generalized skill or not. Or a 5 term Merchant gets a Merchant+2 on their sheet which might be applied to any shipboard skill or anything to do with finding and dealing with cargo and passengers. In most cases, though, if there is a specific skill the PC has on their sheet that will take precedence.

I've also been using the 68A Task system since, oh, probably '78. I quickly got tired of looking up corner cases and just went to "roll 8+", easier being 6 or 7 and harder being 9 or 10 was just natural.

Well, if we're voting. I'm okay with an occasional "damn", "shit", or "hell", but anything else should be "#%@%&!", or something like "frak!"...imo.

As for fraternization, I'd say as long as you "keep it off camera" I'd be okay with it.

I think this is the intial "OMG we have a new game" frenzy and should calm down a bit once we get into the swing of things. I'm a bit daunted an the number of inbound posts myself and trying to make sure I haven't lost anyone.

I don't mind swearing in character as long as it doesn't get out of hand, (I'm as salty as the next guy) but try not to get us thrown off the forum :D If we're making anyone uncomfortable let me know in PM and we'll tone it down. I'm happy to keep it PG 13 too. Frak and Feldercarb your hearts out!! (or better yet come up with some new ones - like "wilson"" or "24" :D )

I promise not to rehash all this in the OOC Chat thread but may I propose the LBBs work great just as they are for a different style of gameplay that later evolved over time and likely in response to consumer demand.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole with me :D what got me back into Classic Traveller were these blog posts about just that from Chris Kubasik]

Worth the time to read and no longer updated but great stuff IMO, that said I have most of the third imperium books and mongoose as well because I love the setting.

Fyi, Becky's not into any of these guys. Lol

As for gaming, I am fine with pc-pc or npc-pc flirting or innuendo or whatever, just don't get too into it.

It sounds like most of us have been rpg-ing for years, and I have encountered far too many players who got too 'into' roleplaying, and it ruined it for everyone.

Hi all, lets try not veer off in a direction we don't want to go down in the chat.

Here are the "unspoliered" version of the forum rules as a reminder.

Thanks

The goal of The Unseen Servant is to provide a helpful and supportive forum for RPG play by post games and RPG-related discussions. With that in mind, we have developed the following Rules to help you better understand what is and what is not acceptable behavior on this site.

Be respectful of other forum members, whether they are users, moderators or administrators, and of people in general. If you can't be polite, you don't belong here.
Do not insult, engage in name-calling, or demean anyone's intelligence or character. Sarcasm or jest may be taken seriously. Remember that written communication is much different than speaking face to face. Don't make your humor personal, as it will most likely be misunderstood.

Do not denigrate anyone's playing style or preferred gaming system. While this forum has attracted a good amount of ‘old-school’ gamers, all systems and genres are acceptable here, as long as it’s an RPG and suitable to the play by post style.

No posting links to copyrighted documents (e.g. scanned rule books), not-free software, etc. Also, if it is not safe for work, then do not post it. EXCESSIVE profanity or profanity just for the sake of it, pornography or links to such material are not acceptable. If you’re not sure if you should post something, then it’s probably a good idea to NOT post it.

Profanity within your game is perfectly acceptable, but just as a courtesy, let your players be aware of it before you start a game, just in case. And most of all, don't direct any profanity towards other players.

Discussion of real-world politics and religion is discouraged. If you want to discuss politics or religion as it relates to some other aspect of your life, there are other forums in which to do so.

No trolling or flaming. This should go without saying. If you’re here, you’re most likely an intelligent person and are capable of civil conversation. If you want to troll or flame just because, put the bottle or pipe down and go outside. If you come across trolling/flaming behavior, please inform a moderator.

One account per person, please. If you are discovered to have started a different account to circumvent these rules, your accounts will be deleted and your IP range banned. If you think a member has multiple accounts, contact a moderator.

There are no expectations on users to run games, play in games, or anything besides have fun. If you want to GM a game, that’s great, just let a moderator or admin know.
All of the above rules apply to all aspects of this forum: thread posting, private messaging, and chat.

Upon recruitment for this mission, would it have been possible for our money to be transferred from a home bank to an Imperial bank on Cyclone or Filentred? Perhaps the transfer documents could have been transferred on the ship that transported us to the fringe of the Empire?

Damn, logic! I have to agree makes sense. If anyone want's to forward cash to the closest imperial world pre-game they can. Still may take some time for a transfer but not nearly as long as I was originally thinking.
