CHAPTER 14: Retrace the Tunnels

Anton tries to see if they are carrying any special equipment as well as trying to determine if one of them is clearly the leader.

"I would prefer not to attack unless they are clearly hostile," opines Kurot.

"There is the option of trying a different entrance. We could make a best guess as to which one we think might take us down into the tunnels."

The Gam’A Zone 21D/82 (Evening)

The fourteen Apemonn are equipped as armed security and show no indication that they are subterranean explorers. All are armed with rifles of an unknown design. The troops mingle about and casually chat in their guttural language.

In front of the upper cave “A” sits a 40ft x 40ft x 6ft raised platform with perimeter railing and central hut. Tents of various sizes surround the platform.

After additional observation, the lower cave “B” appears to be the target of their exploration and not the upper cave “A”. Presumably, there are others inside the cavern/tunnels that these individuals provide overwatch for.

They will likely see us descend regardless of the entrance we choose. Let’s go down, forgoing the high ground, and parlay, suggests Denslow.

He begins shambling slowly to the pass that will lead downward.

"Well here goes nothing. Anybody bring any monkey treats?" Anton follows at a cautious pace.

The Gam’A Zone 21D/82 (Evening)

You advance towards the top of the cliff path and begin to negotiate the winding descent. Easily spotted, your presence elicits a loud, guttural response from the closest Apemonn, “Urgh! Grillawhol, grillawhol! Mhourgh eekg ruhrr monn monn!” who fires a presumed warning shot into the path, 10 feet ahead.



There is an exchange among the farther individuals, and the gunner briefly looks at his comrades, before turning back to face you. He then bellows a command in broken Common, “Halt where u stop and let us know intent!” The Apemonn trains his rifle at Denslow, who is in the lead.

Anton closes the sun visor on his helmet so that his grisly visage does not disturb the apemonn and then raises his hand in a sign of greeting.

The Gam’A Zone 21D/82 (Evening)

The lead Apemonn lowers his rifle but keeps it at the ready. He cautiously moved forward to within a hundred feet of Denslow. “What discuss?” he barks in broken, guttural Common.



“Caves made claim by Honfezgalapad of Feathered Jowls. What he seek, no share.”

His five companions, 300 yards beyond, form a defensive arc while another bolts north, towards the group you first spotted At “A”.

The Apemonn's eyes widen with shock, in an apparent response to Silverstri’s command.



He bolts back down the path, looking north into the valley blocked from your direct view. He pumps his fist in the air several times and turns back to face you. He raises the same fist, thrusting it once towards you.

He remains in place, holds the fist forward and continues to look north.

"I just asked to speak with their boss. The name Honfezgalapad just seems familiar, is all. I think that Sha’oul , the traveller from another world we met who was looking for those glowing rocks, mentioned it"
