Malbek's hammer crashes through the Orc's sword and caves in his chest and he falls gurgling to the floor as blood gushes out of his mouth!
Maeva holds herself and her bow as steadily as possible given the crowded conditions on the stairs, and takes a shot at one of the orcs below her!
Shot 1: [_3d6s5]=(4, 3, 6)=1=1 Maeva's arrow strikes the only armed Orc below and it staggers back, but doesn't fall!

Maeva, Malbek and Aislin watch as the Orc's carrying kegs and bags hustle out through the broken door followed by the lone standing Orc holding a sword. They move fast enough to get out of your line of sight before you can attack again.

You all can hear shouting and running outside! You smell smoke and see the reflected, flickering, light from something burning outside and toward the river.

You can stay where you are, run down the stairs and survey the ground floor, or go out the door following the fleeing Orcs into the street...or perhaps you have another idea! What do you do?

Hermundr brushes past Aislin and Maeve and rushes down the stairs joining Malbek. The two step through the broken door and into the dark streets outside.

Looking right they see a wooden building next to the river, burning. Looking to their left they see a small group of figures rushing toward the dock next to the river. Most of them are carrying bags, crates and kegs. A small number of creatures are between the towns people and these running creatures fighting a withdrawal...it appears. You can barely make out what look like bobbing rafts tied to the docks.

Both of you (and Aislin and Maeve if they follow) are beyond melee range, though one all out run toward the river would get you into the fight! From where you are you are with bow range.

The townspeople are split, some are fighting the invaders and some are fighting the fire. As you stand there you see four men armed with spears, town guard, rushing forward from the walls behind you that surround the town. They are running toward the fighting near the water.

Since the fire could cause a lot more damage than a few stolen supplies, Maeva decides to stay and try to help put out the fire instead.

Aislin takes careful aim fires and then quickly loading her bow does it again! Shot 1: [_3d6s4]=(4, 4, 5)=3=3 Shot2: [_3d6s4]=(4, 4, 3)=2=2 Both shots strike true and two of the Orcs with weapons go down. It looks like most of the others are boarding rafts tied to the docks and already some of the rafts are being cut loose.

Maeve, Malbek and Hermundr run to join those fighting the fire...fires it now appears...as a second building's roof has started to show flickering flames rising.

The village works to put out the fires while the Orcs make a hasty retreat on the river, floating downstream and away from the town.

Surveying the damage, when it is all over, you find 6 Orc dead. There are also 2 townspeople dead and another 2 wounded. One building, a warehouse, is severely damaged, but a second only has a singed roof where wooden shingles ignited and were then put out.

Tired, angry and still somewhat shaky the townspeople gather in the tavern.

"That's not happened in several years!" says one.

Another, a woman, cries "They killed my John! What will I do now!"

After some time you learn that this was the sort of raid that hasn't happened in a very long time. Orcs have stayed on the west side of the river and not bothered people on the eastern side, like those of Berm. The thing is, and most agree that, these Orcs looked sickly, like they were malnourished and ill. There is some speculation as to what would have caused them to go out on the river, which they generally avoid, much less come across to the eastern side...all just guess work as no one knows.

There is agreement that the town will need to strengthen its defenses, especially along the river front. One raid, not completely unsuccessful will begat another and perhaps a heavier one is the general consensus.

Morning comes not too long later. Are you leaving Berm today and heading along the road to Old Bridge?

OOC: You don't always have to roll. Sometimes just doing is all you need. :)

To Malbek, the dead Orcs don't show any symptoms of disease, they just look malnourished. No rumors or stories of famine have been going around. The weather seems to have been normal, at least, here and down river where Malbek has come from. However, it is spring and if these Orc didn't have enough (or lost) their winter stores of food that could explain the way they look now.

The morning is made up of the townspeople repairing the damage done and talking about shoring up defenses along the waterfront. The loss of the warehouse hurts the town, but not seriously as there was little stored there at this time of year. It would have been full of products to trade to the riverboats as they come up and down the river later in the year. However, it will have to be rebuilt.

It's clear from the lack of deaths, or even injuries, that these Orcs were looking to steal and scoot. Most of what was taken was food and ale.

Sometime before noon you are asked, "Will you continue on your journey today or tarry here another night?"
