Treasure Hunting…Dragon's Lair

Once the decision is made to combine forces, and Cassius returns Bronn's sword, the group of eight companions, old and new, leave the wizard's secret (not-so-secret) room and head back toward the main entry chamber. Nothing has changed in the last half hour or so. Bodies lie scattered about, blood congealed on the stone floor, some melted into the walls by the dragon's breath, and some turned to stone by the basilisk's petrifying gaze.
The large stone body of Aulicus the Black Terror stands where he died, a fixture of solid stone forever entombed here in the mound. A very large hole on the eastern wall reveals the path the dragon took to get to the main chamber when he discovered it breached. Gormundel takes one look at that pile of rubble and leads the group back toward the stairs leading to the outer courtyard.
"Trust me," he says, to any who raise questions, and soon the group is outside in the evening air of the Hool Swamp. The air is damp and cold and even though winter is fleeting, there are sounds in the swamp of night creatures hunting and killing, along with the monotonous thud of drums somewhere in the distance.
Behind the altar, where the stairs end, Gormundel turns to the wall behind it where the same bas relief of the demon which marked his secret chamber is also on the wall. He walks up to the demonic relief, removes a small gemstone from a pouch at his belt, and places it inside the demon's open mouth.

The gem rolls through with an audible 'click', and Gormundel pushes open a secret door. A powerful stench hits you in the face; the smell of reptiles, thick and gagging. Beyond the door is a large cavern at least 60 feet across; a side passageway leads off to the left. Gormundel breathes the words of a spell and ensconced torches flare to light at various points in the chamber, allowing you to see inside. Near the rear of the chamber is a very large hole, rubble strewn thereabouts, where Aulicus dug down to try and save his master.

All is quiet in the chamber...

Fahima moves in carefully and begins searching the chamber. Starting along her left wall and going down into 3A.

Zan

Zan will join in the search always keeping an eye on his new friends actions.

How many players did I lose after the last post?

Fahima moves into the chamber, stepping over gnawed bones and refuse to approach the side trail leading into a smaller cavern. Zan follows her and the pair end up in a treasure hold unlike anything they have seen! Piled in a huge mound is the treasure of Aulicus the Black Terror. There are thousands of coins, mostly copper and silver by the looks of it, along with gems scattered along the pile. Various weapons and pieces of armor are also visible, including the hilt of a sword sticking out of the pile.

Actions for Fahima and Zan who get first dibs!

Cassius

Apologies.

Cassius is struck motionless as he is overwhelmed by the hoard. Thoughts of luxury and leisure fill his mind.

He eventually shakes off the stupor and speaks up. "I can't believe I'm saying this, but be careful!" Cassius follows Zan and Fahima into the room and looks around for items of a magical nature.

Sai

Wanders in taking in all the magical weapons and armor piled 20 to 30 feet high. Wades in to the gold coins that come to his waist. Pushing his way through to the center and goes under the gold to dig his way back out.

Shakes his head from the day dream. Where is all the mounds of gold and platinum coins? Dragon hoard usually means there is a hoard. This must have been a Cloistered Dragon. Gave all his hoard to the local charity or the opposite and gave it all to prostitutes. Damn and I thought I might actually get a magical sword.

He kicks a copper piece like a pouting child.

Fahima

Fahima's eyes sparkle as she looks at the hoard, "A real dragon's hoard."

She circles wearily, looking the hoard over and then moves to the sword hilt and pulls it free.

Zan

Zan will expect that we will not be able to stay in here for long, and will ignore the coinage - for the moment. Pulling out the gems, jewelry and other items - looking for something he might be interested in that is not a sword or armor.

Treasure Hunting…Real Treasure!

Once the group doesn't hear screams of agony and death from Fahima and Zan, they wander down the side passage and into the treasure trove of Aulicus. Each reacts in their own way, some with open-mouthed awe, some with dreams of grandeur, and some with, "Holy shit! Look at all that treasure!" (this from Vilana)

Sai is disappointed, however, and makes his feelings known. Where is all the mounds of gold and platinum coins? Dragon hoard usually means there is a hoard. This must have been a Cloistered Dragon. At about the time he mentions the word 'sword,' Fahima grabs the exposed hilt of a blade and pulls it free of the coins.


The sword gleams a brilliant blue in the dark cavern; Fahima can feel the thrum of power in her hand and arm as she holds the sword. It should be heavy for her, but actually it is quite light.

Nearby, Zan is digging around in the coins, picking up gems, when he comes across a leather scroll case. Opening it, he can easily read the writing on it, amazed to find it is a scroll of protection...from undead.

Fahima

With a big grin, "Pretty sure this one is a magic sword, feels nice in my hands. I can use it for sure."

Proficient in the Blades large group, can use any one handed sword, but some require two hands for her.

What type of sword is it?

Fahima marvels at the magical sword. It is very light weight and easy to wield, even for her! And while she holds it, the blade shimmers and "downsizes" to the size of a short sword! Perfect fit for a Halfling.
Fahima stares at the sword open-mouthed, feeling confident this sword will defend her if called upon.

Anyone else doing...anything?

Fahima

"It clearly likes me, so I claim this sword as my share." She then proceeds to search around for anything more that stands out in the horde.

Zan

Zan will continue searching (same goals)

Roan lags behind but eventually enters where everyone else is. "Trust be hard earned. But so far ya ain't tried ta kill me so I s'pose yer earnin' it well." he comments to the wizard Gormundel.

Sai

Steps back and casts detect magic. Scanning for any magic rings.

Roan looks at the hoard trying to pick out any axes, maces, shields, or crossbows. If he doesn't spy anything he waits to see the results of the spell on any of the rings. If all else fails he will see if there are any amulets or bracers in the mix.

Treasure Hunting…Satisfied

Satisfied with her find, Fahima claims the magical sword, while Zan continues to look around the pile of treasure, finding a flask of translucent red liquid.
Satisfied Gormundel and Bronn have not tried to kill them yet, Roan looks around the treasure room while Sai casts a spell of magic detection. The Elf is nearly blinded by all of the "glowing" objects in the room!
First off, he notices Bronn is wearing magical armor, along with carrying a potent magical sword and wearing a ring of his left hand.
Gormundel also has a ring and a magical cloak, and of course, his wand.
Turning his attention to the treasure pile, Sai spies several other items here and there among the coins.
He sees the hilt of a sword, the handle of what could be a flail or mace, a flask or two, the heel of a boot, and a breastplate. His head is pounding by this time and he has to close his eyes for a few seconds to rest.

Cassius is unusually quiet, perhaps still gawking at all of the treasure, but Vilana finally speaks. "By Corellan's bow! This is a trove! How are we going to carry all of this out of here?"

Fahima

"We leave any coins except platinum for now. Take everything else we can find. We figure the rest out once we are ready to head out. First we need the stuff that will help us defeat the undead lizardman."

She continues to search for interesting ideas, "Sai, can you point me towards any more magic items?"

Sai

Will go and retrieve the sword from the pile and point out the rest of the objects to people close to it. I found another sword and several other things partially covered. There, that boot, that Breastplate, those flasks there and there. And that handle over there. Mace or Flail maybe. Gather them all, we will need them if we are facing a vampire. Making a mental note of the magic on the mercenaries and the mage.
