Rabinowitz looks at the hole in his side, wondering how serious the wound is. He runs toward the purple smoke, pulls a grenade's pin, and throws it toward the center of the foxhole under the cloud.

Roker does as he's ordered and runs forward, shooting any hostile targets as he goes.

Ridge above of Aslito Airfield, Island of Saipan, approximately 9:40 AM, June 17, 1944; Island of Saipan

The battle on the ridge surrounding the Aslito Airfield was coming to a bloody and spectacular conclusion....

-Tucker and Rabinowitz

Both members of SST 4 who had been wounded and could now see the battle between the IJA troops on top of the ridge and their fellow rushing teammates and Army Soldiers of the 165th was about to get to hand-to-hand range and both continued to ignore the Japanese trooper manning the LMG close to them and both threw grenades at the foxhole surrounded by the Purplish Smoke emanating from a Unit 781 Japanese Talent....

Elias Tucker primed another 'pineapple' and hurled it with spot-on accuracy and his follow through motion ended with him on his belly as a round fired by the Type 96 LMG manned by the solider they continued to ignore hit the back of his shoulder...but luckily for him, it was just a graze*....
While he couldn't tell the results, the grenade landed right behind the cloud of smoke, bounced right into the thick wall and with a strange 'light inside the weird colored fog', it went off....

Not far from Elias, Saul Rabinowitz did the same thing....ignored the closer enemy, primed another 'egg' and tossed it. His toss though was NOT so good and it bounced at a 90 degree angle to the 'left' of his intended target and exploded harmlessly away, its bits of shrapnel just ricocheting off of nearby rocks...Saul had little time to reflect on that though as he felt like he got punched the back and suddenly breathing was hard and painful as he was driven face-down onto his belly and his uniform shirt was very wet with his blood. The logical part of his brain was telling him his wound was a bad one, probably a collapsed lung and he was bleeding heavily**.....

-Everyone Else

As the distance between the charging up the Ridge American Soldiers and members of SST 4 continued to shrink; the intensity of the fight continued to ratchet up....

Rifleman Gurung got to 40 yards away from the foxhole containing the wounded-but-game Japanese loader doing his best to will himself over to the Type 92 'Woodpecker' HMG and the Gurkha pulled one of his grenades off his webbing and primed it. Hurling it towards the enemy, his throw was a bit short, but it still exploded close enough to knocked the weapon over AND take out the IJA trooper before he could cut loose more 7.7mm rounds at them.....

Running next to Gurung, Roker saw a trio of Japanese soldiers suddenly rise up from the ground, let out a fierce 'Banzai!' scream and charge towards them with their bayonet equipped Arisaka Rifles. He instinctively fired his Carbine at one of them and his snap-shot was outstanding, hitting the solider in the face and dropping him immediately! This DID leave two solider though still racing right at him and getting to within about 20 yards of him and Gurung.....

Major Acme moved carefully towards the Purple-Smoke filled foxhole, noting an IJA trooper with the distinctive Unit 781 armband on the shoulder emerge from the smoke and move forward with a Nambu pistol in one hand while his other pointed at a group of U.S. Army soldiers and his eyes were glowing bright orange. A moment later, a lightning bolt came down and quickly electrified a trio of soldiers, leaving them smoking bodies on the ground. Several U.S. soldiers suddenly pulled back in fear, but then a moment later, a pair of blasts from behind knocked the Japanese Talent to the ground...

As the perhaps a dozen surviving Japanese soldiers saw the U.S. attack get to within 40 yards from them, almost as one, they rose up and screamed out 'BANZAI!' and charged forward. Acme noticed one drop from a trio moving towards Gurung and Roker, but he was consumed with noticing one charging right for him and he cut loose a 5 round burst from his Thompson, riddling the man's middle and dropping him out of the fight forever....

From behind the onrushing wave, the wounded IJA Talent with the Lightning rose to his feet, his eyes meeting Acme's and in that moment, there battle seemed to pause and switch planes of existence***......

OOC: Okay, Saul and Tucker still have an IJA solider with an LMG about 20 yards away from them and firing at them while the smoke is clearing enough to let them know all the Mortar teams and the Purple Smoke Talent are pulped....Acme and the Lightning Talent are entering a Contest of Wills, Rose: let me know how many (if any) Will Power Points you'd like to spend on this roll.......Roker and Gurung have 2 soldiers with bayonets charging them...you can meet them half-way in hand-to-hand if you so desire or get a shot off before they get to you....

*Tucker was lucky and was only Grazed....he IS still Wounded, but his next round's actions will be at -1D+2 (or 5 pips) for all actions.....after that, he's at -1D to all actions until treated...

**Saul is SERIOUSLY Wounded....he's at -2D for all actions until treated and he's in a bad way and can't move much until treated....

***Acme has up to 24 WPs he can spend on this roll...it's his Will Power (4d6) + the number of WPs vs. the same from the Talent....Luck Points can't be used on these)

Elias knows that they were not totally effective, and being pinned down by the lmg was not a happy place, but he saw Saul bleeding out and had to act.

Continuing his focus, he takes his third grenade and throws it at the lmg pit, expending his last luck point.

Gurung

If he doesn't have his armor up Gurung will activate it and his energy khukri. Then charge into the Japanese soldiers.

Saul Rabinowitz dropped to the ground from the force of the LMG's bullet. He was weak and about in shock. He pulled the pin of a grenade and lobbed it toward the machine gun pit.

He spends a Luck point.

Roker grins. Are the eye teeth in that grin getting longer? If the Japanese soldiers want hand-to-hand combat, he'll give them someone to fight hand-to-claw...

Assuming Roker has time to wolf out before the charging soldiers engage, he'll do that.

Acme

As the world disconcertingly swirls around him, he knows that now is not the time for subtlety. Marvin uses all his WP to overpower the lightning talent and force him to...something...he doesn't really know, having never tried it in combat. His thought is to just negate him, but maybe he could redirect it back to the talent.

Ridge above of Aslito Airfield, Island of Saipan, approximately 9:45 AM, June 17, 1944; Island of Saipan

Atop the Ridge surrounding the bombed-out Aslito Airfield on the war-torn island of Saipan, a battle between U.S. Soldiers of the 165th Regiment and the Talents of SST 4 and a group of Japanese troops came to a bloody conclusion.....

A badly wounded Saul Rabinowitz and a hurt but-still-game Eliast Tucker both primed grenades and hurled them at an IJA trooper who was changing clips of the Type 96 Light Machinegun he had used to wound both of them and a few moments later, with twin BOOMs, the man was torn to pieces....

Major Marvin Acme had locked eyes with the Japanese 'Lightning Bringer' Talent and in a different place, far removed from the here-and-now....hell, even form this plane of existence.....a fight no one else could see broke out. A figure in Samurai armor and wielding a slightly curved sword charged across a featureless landscape....he was met by a strange figure that appeared to be nothing so much as a bomb with a lit fuse on legs that somehow LAUGHED gleefully......it met the Samurai figure and exploded with a bright light that seemed to sear into two men's souls.....

Back in the here and now, Major Acme felt a sudden rush of excitement as he instinctively KNEW he had just defeated the IJA Talent. The man slumped to the ground, looking at nothing and not able to even lift his weapons. A split second later, a screaming Army SGT Major Ostrum yelled out; "TAKE THAT YOU FREAK BASTARD!!!!!" and he slammed his bayonet equipped M1 Garand into the Talent's chest and drove him all the way into the ground. Then he pulled the rifle back and fired several times into his chest....

Gurung's body became covered in hard scales and a purple lit khukri appeared in his hands as the IJA trooper rushed him and his bayonet glanced off the Talent's rock-like skin and then a moment later the purple energy blade decapitated the man and that was that.....

Roker howled and his body morphed into that of a Wolf-Man, causing the Japanese soldier rushing him to slip and fall as his eyes suddenly went from rage-filled to fear-filled. A moment later, a terrible scream was quickly cut off as Roker messily ended the Japanese soldier's life.....

The rest of the IJA troops were quickly dealt with by the soldiers of the 165th, but Frank Queen pushed through anyone blocking his path as he rushed over to find Rabinowitz and Elias Tucker. "Oh shit...." the veteran sailor exclaimed and then he quickly set down his modified Lewis Gun and put his hands on the Marine Talent. A moment later his hands vibrated strangely and a light seemed to encompass Saul for a moment before it faded and then Rabinowitz was shcoked to learn that while he was still sore and exhausted...he was NOT hurt anymore. A few moments later, Tucker was in the same boat after Frank healed him as well.....

"Queen, I'm feeling better."

Then jumping to a start.

"Where is Rabinowitz, is he alright?"

Elias probably did not even see the hands..

Acme

He looks around rapidly, getting his bearings. "Well, that was interesting. Everyone good?" Marvin notices Roker-wolf and nods. "Give him a wide berth for a few. He'll be fine."

"SGT Major. Looks like we have the ridge."

Rabinowitz experiences the odd sensation of be sore, exhausted, and soaked in blood, but healed up both externally and internally. Thanks much, Queen. I guess sometimes the Navy can do more for the Marines than just give them a ride to where they need to go. He grins and winks.

Wolf-Man Roker turns toward the rest of SST4 and remembers, as he always does, "Friends. Not for eating." He falls to all fours and reverts back to human form, still panting.

Ridge above and amidst the ruins of Aslito Airfield, Island of Saipan to the landing beaches of Saipan and then the USS Fremont, approximately 9:45 AM to 8:00 AM, June 17-18th, 1944; Island of Saipan

After Queen did what he could to stem the wounds of Saul and Elias, he collapsed on the ground and got some much needed rest as the rest of SST 4 and the Army soldiers of the 165th Regiment got the top of the Ridge squared away.....

About half an hour later, everyone was recovered enough to make their way back down the Ridge to the shattered Airfield and they were soon found by a runner of Colonel Kelley's, who led them to the Regimental Commander's Command Post. "Well, that was one HELLUVA fine job you boys did! I've had my cooks make up a lunch for you all and then I'm gonna give you all some R&R for the next week back on the USS Fremont....you've certainly earned it and I doubt we'll be needing your services as we mop up this corner of the island. On the 24th, you can come back and by that point, I'm sure we'll be moving North to take the rest of the island, but in the meantime....rest up and get some good sleep and chow back on the Troop Transport; I insist!", he finished up while having an aide hand him the typed up orders expressly giving the men of SST 4 a week's worth or Rest and Relaxation, which he then handed to Major Acme with a grin....

Major Acme was in a bit of a pickle....he KNEW he couldn't just refuse the Colonel's orders AND he knew that it was highly unlikely his Marine superiors would be happy with him taking his team of 'Special Assets' out of the fight for a week. Finally, he made a compromise to himself; he'd spend the night on the ship and then revisit the problem in the morning.....

Jeeps took them back to the landing beaches and they were amazed to see how much of the wreckage of the fight had been cleared away; though many shot up bunkers and wrecked tanks were still visible. A mountain of supplies were being moved constantly to and from the beach and a few of the same LVT 'Alligators' that had brought them to the island in the initial assault were now being used to ferry men and supplies to the landing ships anchored off the island....

As they came down to the beach, they ran into one Captain L. Waid; USMC and aide to General H.M. 'Howling Mad' Smith himself; the overall commander of the entire Saipan Operation. He quickly asked Acme what exactly he was doing on the beach with SST 4 and when the latter handed him the orders from Colonel Kelley; he grunted in an annoyed fashion, but waved them on their way.....

The Alligator ferried them back to the USS Fremont; where the ship was now nearly deserted with all of the troops unloaded. They had a hearty meal of steaks, potatoes and some limp salad and were roundly cheered as 'heroes' by the sailors on board. The bunks they had were quiet and extremely comfortable and in no time at all, the members of SST 4 were all sleeping like babies....

Everyone was awake and eating a wonderful, hot breakfast the next morning around 8 AM as they heard the sailors gossiping about how the Soldiers under Army General Ralph Smith were bogged down fighting the Japanese in the SE corner of the island as the Marines were making tough, but steady progress towards the Northern end of the island....

Gurung

Gurung finishes his breakfast and slides his plate away. "Our last 2 meals have been very good except for the lack of tea. But I think it sounds like we are needed and it is time to get back to work."

He rises and goes to gather his gear and see if he can get some more ammo for his Enfield.

Acme

Marvin concurs with Gurung. "Yep. Let's get refitted and I'll have a chat with Captain Waid. I'm sure our services are needed somewhere."

He goes about checking on his guys, making sure everyone is ready to get off the ship, then goes in search of Captain Waid.

Saul enjoys the hot food and cool, dry bunk while he can. The cushy conditions won't last forever, that's for sure. He finds a Life magazine and reads it cover to cover, paying special attention to the Rita Hayworth photo shoot.

USS Fremont off the landing beaches of the island of Saipan at approximately 10:45 AM on June 18th, 1944 thru to 'Death Valley' in the plateaus near the base of Mt. Tapotchau in the central part of the island of Saipan at approximately 11:15 AM on 25 June, 1944

After a heavenly day of rest on the USS Fremont, Major Acme uses all the pull he can to get his team of Talents back on the island of Saipan and gets his wish a day later with Saul and Elias fully back to health, thanks to the ship-board Docs and another visit from Queen; they are soon back on the island of Saipan.....but spend the next 5 days 'in the Rear with the Gear', as nobody with authority seems to know where to find Colonel Kelley or what to do with them, so they do various odd jobs here and there to help the 'logistics train' of supporting two Marine and one Army Division at war....

During this time, they follow the course of the overall battle thanks to the most powerful news service in the world; military scuttlebutt....

From 18-21 June, Major General Ralph Smith, the Commanding Officer (C.O.) of the Army's 27th Infantry Division gets bogged down trying to clear out the South East corner of Saipan. The 105th and the 165th Regiments (who they just fought with at Aslito) are grinding their way to the Nafutan peninsula....

On 21 June, over the strenuous objections of General Ralph Smith; Marine Lieutenant H.M. (Howling Mad) Smith, USMC and overall U.S. Commander, orders most of the Army's 27th Infantry Division to form up abreast with the two Marine Divisions (the 2nd and 4th Marines) and push North along the main, central axis of the island. A single Army Rifle Battalion is left to clear out the Nafutan peninsula. Military Intel claims there's less than 300 Japanese troops still located there, when in fact the true number is close to 1,500!

On 22 June; as the Army units from the 27th Division move up North to move into position alongside the Marine Divisions, some of the formations become entangled, delaying the entire push up the middle offensive and by the next morning, the Army units have only advanced a few hundred yards....

On 23 June Howlin' Mad Smith lives up to his name as he becomes publicly enraged upon learning that Army General Smith is still spending most of his time giving orders to the one Battalion left to clear out Nafutan....

On 24 June, LT GEN H.M. Smith, USMC formally relieves U.S. Army MAJ GEN Ralph Smith, USA for unsatisfactory performance and while he's at it, ol' Howling Mad sacks the Army Commander of the lone Battalion trying to clear out Nafutan as well. By this point in the campaign, it's obvious that U.S. forces are in no danger of being thrown off the island; but it's also obvious the Japanese are still strongly resisting and are having no problems with morale....

On 25 June contact is finally made between SST 4 and Colonel Kelly of the 165th Army Regiment who sends a truck to bring the Talents up to his current location. Around 11 in the AM, the truck comes to a stop in the winding, narrow valleys between plateaus near the base of Mount Tapotchau in the center of the island. Leaving the truck behind, the half dozen members of SST 4 move towards the Command Tent of Colonel Kelley of the 165th....

Colonel Kelley is looking haggard and draw; his uniform wilted from spending over a week in combat. He seems to barely notice your arrival, a fate nod being all he seems to have the energy to give them. He continues briefing his Battalion commanders for a moment, then sends them away with a last bit of orders and then moves over to Acme and co.....

"I wish I could say it was great to see you fellas again....but I got an ass-chewing from ol' Howling Mad himself the other day for sending you lot back to the beaches for awhile.....hell, I'm quite shocked I'm still in command of my Regiment after what he did to poor ol' General Ralph Smith, among others....."

"Anyway, I hope you got plenty of rest and good chow; 'cause we got some tough work out there for you to help us out with." He points out a map of a narrow valley, running between a pair of Plateaus and says; "This is what my troops are calling 'Death Valley'. It's narrow, got lots of caves and tunnels dug out of the sides and while I've got Arty and Air Support available...it's tough to get to these Nips as they're dug in like ticks....."

"This means, we've got to clear them out the ol' fashioned way. Having you boys should hopefully make the job faster and cost fewer lives. I'll be attaching you to Captain Prout's Baker Company and I believe he has some troops to lend you as you go about clearing out the Valley. Good hunting and God Bless", he finishes with another tired head nod and he moves on to talk to others in his Regiment and a PFC named Vincennes comes up to lead them to Captain Prout....

They move into the narrow valley with the steep Plateau walls on either side of them, sounds of Artillery, occasional planes flashing by overhead and gunfire filling their ears. Captain Prout has a tall, skinny NCO wearing Staff SGT's stripes and about 20 troops near him as he nods and introduces himself to the members of SST 4. "Well, this here is SSGT Morris; he's leading 2nd Platoon since Lieutenant Flynn got hit yesterday. Right now, the Platoon is 22 strong and it's got 3 BARs; a Flamethrower and a Bazooka. The damn Nips are dug into caves and hidden tunnels in the walls on both sides of the Valley, plus surely they've got some nasty surprises in the middle of the Valley as well....so move slow and steady and make damn sure you finish off any Japanese troops you find COMPLETELY before pressing on. You're to start along the left-hand Plateau wall/side of the Valley. Good luck", he finished with a handshake of Acme's and soon, the 28 military personnel are moving carefully along the left/western edge of the Valley....

OOC: There's a central path that winds itself thru the valley (remember on the Map, North is pointing towards the right edge)...you guys are alongside the top/left hand part of the map, near the number 1. There are 22 Army soliders with you.....they include two BARs (Browning Automatic Rifles) a Flamethrower and a Bazooka.
