The Gnolls Ruin.
Durgo says, "Let's get going. I think we can be on our way. Much thanks to the Chief for allowing us to put the matter to rest."
Durgo adds an urgency in his voice to counter an further contemplation of descending the shaft ladder into the dark cistern. Certainly the condition of the 'lost' children is strange and concerning and you have a constant itch, a distrust of Xapache. While the Gnolls are generally 'tolerant' of your presence, you know the acceptance into their midst could turn very quickly. Time then not to outstay your welcome.

The consensus is to leave. The subject of future trade is broached; in principal trade sounds good but they are wary of too much intrusion.

while the Gnolls are a significant presence in the forest and have taken over these ruins, they are not in great numbers having only recently established themselves.

You might know that Lord Krothos sent a troop to raid the lizardmen encampment recently and it would not be out of his remit to likewise try to drive these away from civilized settlements.

Brother Symeon will also recognise that the various 'Old Ones' icons and cult stuff will no doubt be influencing the Gnolls in some way, as it does with the Svirfneblin. Going forward, while 'cthulhu' type demonics are not in current pantheon, certainly 'evil aligned' deities have a loose grip in thise who dwell in the forest and under the earth hereabouts. You will do well to take that into any long term planning in relation to outreach and world building.

Withdrawing from the cistern, the shaft is covered again leaving the 'god touched' children to vent fear and fury upon the branch ladder.

Hrasa, escorts you to the edge of the Gnoll camp, bidding you goodbye. You hurry along, having a concern the Gnolls may betray your peaceful trade by determining to hunt you in the forest as you retrace steps. Durgo and Xapache give each other some mutual eye-to-eye warrior face-off. In another time, you can imagine he might indeed try to rip yours off and feast upon brains, eyeballs and tongue.

For now though, you leave without conflict.

Xapache Gnoll reactions with Durgo [1d100]=78

Actions I rolled a few such checks but no hostility was generated. You can suspect the Gnoll Ruin will hold more secrets than just the lost children. Things you or others can follow up on in later expeditions.

Cara Crow leads the way, tracking through the woods.

Durgo

OOC - I'd agree the temple needs to be investigated...The gnolls need to be cleared. I think the trade offer is more a peace offering first to get access to the kids and the next one to lay a trap to pick some off to thin their numbers. Cara said she counted a quiver full...is that 12 or 20? Grin.

Durgo says, "I think that was pushing it my friends. I'm sorry I just had a thought and the hairs on the back of my neck went up. We got lucky. If we have time on the way back through the quarry perhaps, we can check for silk along the way? We can also just go back to Helix to report on the kids. I'd like to claim the logging camp unless any of you would like to, or we can all go in together. I'm also going to start up the trading company going to the mines that any of you can partner with me on."

Brother Symeon

No offense taken by me, lad. I fear you were wise to act so. Given the blasphemous gods of these creatures, I fear what they may qualify as "god touched." We would be best to clear the ruins of them, but we would need to raise a greater host than our little band.

Genaromes frowns a little, but stays silent. As much as he dislikes the gnolls, the idea of "clearing" them does not appeal to him. Most of his thoughts are for the children though.

Durgo

"Well folks. More silk or shall we get back to town straight away?"

Durgo will stow his sword and shield and get to mapping out the trip back from the gnolls with Gen's assistance.

"Gen, let's make sure we have a rough map of this place and the route. We need as much intel for others as possible. The maps may yield some coin in themselves you know. Maps to the cabin, quarry, and opening to heaven, and the gnolls temple. Getting the gnolls boundaries of territory might be at least useful temporarily just for an initial reference to be on the lookout for them. The'll likely expand a little bit if we don't deal with them very quickly. We'll need more detailed cave entrance and cave paths eventually too with the dangers known for each."

Genaromes agrees with Durgo and does his best to sketch what he remembers on the map, so as to at least make it useful.

"I vote for going back to town as fast as possible. I worry of what might happen to the kids, even though they have been in this predicament for a long time already..."

Surveying the Blackened Forest.

Cara Crow: ranger skills check [1d100]=89

Your hired hands prove their worth, Cara Crow tracking the sun's movement, moss on trees and way of the wind to orientate the group and head southwards through the woods, the shortest route to the westward trade road.

Squirrel collects various forest edibles en route. A vigilant watch established to counter sny surprise Gnoll attack (though that might actually not be very surprising at all). But none comes.

Blackened Forest encounters vs 1 [1d6]=6[1d6]=2[1d6]=4[1d6]=3

You can slow the pace once clear of the Gnoll territory (they may lay claim to the whole forest though realistically may struggle to influence more than a single hex worth of forest). There are spiders. You have nets, wrangling lances, experience.

Orb weaver encounter: vs 1-2 [1d6]=2 yardage spooled [3d6]=4

I rolled four 'random encounters' above and four Orb Weaver encounters. Only the above generated a positive, but a lowly amount in Silk Yardage, +400 yards of silk thread. A meagre amount but each gold piece earned adds to party hoard.

Genaromes: cartographic survey skills vs 50% [1d100]=38

Taking care to survey the lay of the land and add in extra geological features to the base map. With a skill check success you can draw the map accurately with the distance between key points, compass directions, contour heights estimated and notes in the forest density.

Actions with the group heading back and no encounters generated, I am fine to conclude this short expedition. By late evening of June 29th, the group return to the safety of Helix and a welcome beer in the tavern.

Actions post any last comments. I will add up some experience awards and you can debate any share of remaining trove. How you share your findings to others in authority will be for you in the settlement locations.

potentially another exped is winding up soon so I will try and get you folk to mingle in Helix as you plan next adventures.

Durgo

"Good job everyone. Well done my friends. Memories for a lifetime I'd say. Helix looms and I'm ready for a drink, bath and rest. I'll get Cara and Squirrel taken care of. I can help Brother Symeon at St. Ygg with the kids issue. Anyone want to take on the bear skin negotiation and/or the trinket/gem appraisals at Rosey's? If not, I can work on those two. Of couse you all welcome to tag along on any of my meetings too. I'm ok with running another expedition with you too. The timing of the expedition may determine how much time we have to do tasks here in Helix. I did a poem after the last expedition if anyone wants to write one up go ahead."

Fydmar
I've got to check in on the mechanical golem. But will join you for drinks before that!
Would prefer a portion of Fydmar's share of the spider silk as silk since some will be needed for the golem.

Brother Symeon

I'll be off to the chapel to make a report on the children and the gnolls.

I'll be content with whatever cut the more business minded among the group deem fair for my services.

Praise to the St for another safe journey.

Genaromes volunteers to go to Rosey and sell the items collected by the party during the expedition. He is also curious to follow along what happens at the chapel as well.

I will resolve Helix location thread posts so that you have a clearer trove value to share out. Fydmar for example could take the silk spools in lieu of 50gp as he needs silk thread for his Construct project.
I did a poem after the last expedition if anyone wants to write one up go ahead."
Tributes and Memorials all add to personal or corporate xp awards.

I will edit here any resolutions of note.

Treasure Trove

Shared between four full character shares and half share each to Cara and Squirrel.

Spider silk spools, yardage given to Valeron, value listed +50gp but taken as part of his trove share by Fydmar

Bearskins, x6, in need of curing and tanning. see Falstaff, Helix farrier for appraisal.

Four large pike spears. due to their quality, you may quick sale these to Decimus at the Manse barracks, double of btb lance prices , so +12gp each. +48gp

1600sp, 1500cp (worth 87gp, 10sp)

Two sacks of 'bazaar level' trinkets, one from Ettin cave, one from Gnoll trades. usually I randomise a value per sack.

Bazaar trinkets value: x 20 items each sack: Ettin sack [1d6+4]=4+4=8 Gnoll Sack [1d4+1]=1+1=2

so quick sale can liquidate goods for +160gp & +40gp.

Ornamental stones, x 55, taken from Ettin Cave. need appraising in Rosy Quartz. sold +700gp

Rabbit Skin toga ( worn by Cara Crow)

Apart from bearskins which you could take as one each or sell to the farrier, even commission them to be crafted as a Tribute to Expedition item and gain xp from their being worn if turned into cloaks, jerkins, helms, gloves, etc; the combined monetary value stands at:

1085gp 10sp / shares = 197gp, 17sp, 2cp per character. (147gp + spools to Fydmar).

How does that work for a quick division of the goods?

sorry maths a bit out, it should be half shares to npc's but I won't adjust it further.

With experience points awarded and trove divided, as folk act in settlement locations, I will go ahead and move this to the Completed Expeditions thread.

Thanks guys, it was a fun little trip with some dangerous moments and good rolls saving you from bigger troubles.
